A temperature- and coverage-dependant quasi-reversible change in two-photon photoemission (2PPE) of chemisorbed 1-phenyl-1-propyne (PP) on Cu(111) is reported. For PP on Cu(111) at 300 K probed at a photon energy of 4.13 eV, two broad peaks of comparable intensity show final state energies of 7.25 and 7.75 eV above the Fermi level. The former peak could be assigned to the first image potential state (IS, n = 1) and/or unoccupied molecular orbital (UMO), located at 3.1 eV above the Fermi level. The latter is plausibly attributed to a mix of unoccupied higher-order IS (and/or UMO) and occupied surface state (SS) of Cu(111). With decreasing the temperature, the former 2PPE peak shows a shift in position by about 0.2 eV, and the latter exhibits a dramatic increase in intensity. In the system, intermolecular interactions (and/or order-disorder transition) of PP and substrate lattice temperature may play a significant role in change in photoexcitation lifetime (or excitation cross-section), and the unoccupied molecular orbital (UMO)-metal (IS) charge transfer coupling. Our unique 2PPE results provide a deeper insight for understanding photoexcitation charge transfer with temperature in an organic molecule/metal system.

In this paper, ZnO films were prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and CdS films were deposited using chemical bath deposition (CBD) to form ZnO/CdS heterojunction. More accurate mapping of band arrangement of the ZnO/CdS heterojunction has been performed by analyzing its electrical and optical characteristics in depth by various methods including transmittance, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). The optical bandgap energies ($E_g$) of ZnO and CdS were 3.27 eV and 2.34 eV, respectively. UPS was capable of extracting the ionization potential energies (IPEs) of the materials, which turned out to be 8.69 eV and 7.30 eV, respectively. The electron affinity (EA) values of ZnO and CdS calculated from IPE and $E_g$ were 5.42 eV and 4.96 eV, respectively. Energy-band structures of the heterojunction could be accurately drawn from these parameters taking the conduction band offset (CBO) into account, which will substantially help acquisition of the full band structures of the thin films in the CIGS solar-cell device and contribute to the optimal device designs.

The effect of thermal anneal on the characteristics of structural properties and the enhancement of luminescence and photovoltaic (PV) characteristics of silicon-rich silicon-nitride films were investigated. By using an ultra high vacuum ion beam sputtering deposition, B-doped silicon-rich silicon-nitride (SRSN) thin films, with excess silicon content of 15 at. %, on P-doped (n-type) Si substrate was fabricated, sputtering a highly B doped Si wafer with a BN chip by N plasma. In order to examine the influence of thermal anneal, films were then annealed at different temperature up to $1100^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ environment. Raman, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy did not show any reliable evidence of amorphous or crystalline Si clusters allowing us concluding that nearly no Si nano-cluster could be formed through the precipitation of excess Si from SRSN matrix during thermal anneal. Instead, results of Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy clearly indicated that defective, amorphous Si-N matrix of films was changed to be well-ordered thanks to high temperature anneal. The measurement of spectral ellipsometry in UV-visible range was carried out and we found that the optical absorption edge of film was shifted to higher energy as the anneal temperature increased as the results of thermal anneal induced formation of $Si_3N_4$-like matrix. These are consistent with the observation that higher visible photoluminescence, which is likely due to the presence of Si-N bonds, from anneals at higher temperature. Based on these films, PV cells were fabricated by the formation of front/back metal electrodes. For all cells, typical I-V characteristic of p-n diode junction was observed. We also tried to measure PV properties using a solar-simulator and confirmed successful operation of PV devices. Carrier transport mechanism depending on anneal temperature and the implication of PV cells based on SRSN films were also discussed.

We deposited the carbon films on Ni substrates by thermal atomic layer deposition (th-ALD), for the first time, using carbon tetrabromide ($CBr_4$) precursors and H2 reactants at two different temperatures (573 K and 673 K). Morphology of carbon films was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The carbon films having amorphous carbon structures were analyzed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. As the working temperature was increased from 573 K to 673 K, the intensity of C1s spectra was increased while that of O1s core spectra was reduced. That is, the purity of carbon films containing bromine (Br) atoms was increased. Also, the thin amorphous carbon films (ALD 3 cycle) were transformed to multilayer graphene segregated on Ni layer, through the post-annealing and cooling process.

By using high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we show that inelastic scattering of photoelectron at low temperature (30K~50K) generates two kinds of oxygen species on Pt (111) surface. Intense synchrotron radiation source dissociates oxygen molecules into chemisorbed atomic oxygen and induces the formation of PtO on surface. Estimated coverage of dissociated atomic oxygen is 0.5 ML, suggesting possible formation of p($2{\times}1$) surface structure, while PtO coverage shows saturation coverage of 0.5 ML. Molecular oxygen dosed at 30 K undergoes thermally activated transition from physisorbed to chemisorbed state at around 40K.

The orientation of the constituent molecules in organic thin film devices can affect significantly their performance due to the highly anisotropic nature of ${\pi}$-conjugated molecules. We report here an angle dependent x-ray absorption study of the control of such molecular orientation using well-ordered interlayers for the case of a bilayer heterojunction of chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) and C60. Furthermore, the orientation-dependent energy level alignment of the same bilayer heterojunction has been measured in detail using synchrotron radiation-excited photoelectron spectroscopy. Regardless of the orientation of the organic interlayer, we find that the subsequent ClAlPc tilt angle improves the ${\pi}-{\pi}$ interaction at the interface, thus leading to an improved short-circuit current in photovoltaic devices based on ClAlPc/C60. The use of the interlayers does not change the effective band gap at the ClAlPc/C60 heterointerface, resulting in no change in open-circuit voltage.

The bonding configuration and adsorption stability of alanine and leucine adsorbed on Ge(100)-2${\times}$1 surface were investigated and compared using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The bonding configuration, stability, and adsorption energies were evaluated for two different coverage levels. In both cases, the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core-level spectra at a low coverage (0.30 ML) indicated that the carboxyl and amine groups participated in bonding with the Ge(100) surface in an "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure". At high coverage levels (0.60 ML), both this structure and an "O-H dissociation bonded structure" were present. As a result, we found that alanine adsorbs more easily (lower adsorption energy) than leucine on Ge(100) surfaces due to less steric hindrance of side chain.

Surface science is intrinsically related to the performance of solar cells. In solar cells the generation and collection of charge carriers determines their efficiency. Effective transport of charge carriers across interfaces and minimization of their recombination at surfaces and interfaces is of utmost importance. Thus, the chemistry at the surfaces and interfaces of these devices must be determined, and related to their performance. In this talk we will discuss the role of two important interfaces, First, the role of surface passivation is very important in limiting the rate of carrier of recombination. Here we will combine x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the surface of a Si device with electrical measurements to ascertain what factors determine the quality of a solar cell passivation. In addition, the quality of the heterojunction interface in a ZnSe/CdTe solar cell affects the output voltage of this device. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy gives some insight into the composition of the interface, while ultraviolet photoemission yields the relative energy of the two materials' valence bands at the junction, which controls the open circuit voltage of the solar cell. The relative energies of ZnSe and CdTe at the interface is directly affected by the material quality of the interface through processing.
The electronic structures and bonding configuration of histidine on Ge(100) have been investigated with various sample treatments using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES). Interpretation of the Ge 3d, C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core level spectra being included in these systems revealed that both the imino nitrogen in the imidazole ring and the carboxyl group in the glycine moiety concurrently participate in the adsorption of histidine on a Ge(100) surface at 380 K. Moreover, we could clearly confirm that the imino nitrogen with a free lone pair in the imidazole group adsorbs on Ge(100) more strongly than the carboxyl group in the glycine moiety by examining systems annealed at various temperatures.

Copper is considered to be the most promising substrate, especially Cu(111), for the growth of high quality monolayer graphene. Since interactions between graphene and Cu substrates will influence on the orientation, quality, and electrical properties of synthesized graphene, we experimentally determine a weak interfacial interaction between Cu(111) substrate and graphene using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The measurement was conducted from the initial stage to the formation of a graphene monolayer. Graphene growth was initiated along the Cu(111) lattice, and two rotated graphene domains were grown, where no significant differences were observed in the band structure depending on different orientations. The interaction, including electron transfer from the Cu(111) to graphene, was limited between the Shockley state of the Cu(111) surface and the ${\pi}$ bands of graphene. These results provide direct information on the growth behavior and interactions between the Cu(111) and graphene.
