  • The purpose of this study is to improve the daily prediction results of PM2.5 from the air quality diagnosis and evaluation system operated by the Busan Institute of Health and Environment in real time. The air quality diagnosis and evaluation system is based on the photochemical numerical model, CMAQ (Community multiscale air quality modeling system), and includes a 3-day forecast at the end of the model's calculation. The photochemical numerical model basically has limitations because of the uncertainty of input data and simplification of physical and chemical processes. To overcome these limitations, this study applied DNN (Deep Neural Network), a deep learning technique, to the results of the numerical model. As a result of applying DNN, the r of the model was significantly improved. The r value for GFS (Global forecast system) and UM (Unified model) increased from 0.77 to 0.87 and 0.70 to 0.83, respectively. The RMSE (Root mean square error), which indicates the model's error rate, was also significantly improved (GFS: 5.01 to 6.52 ug/m3 , UM: 5.76 to 7.44 ug/m3 ). The prediction results for each concentration grade performed in the field also improved significantly (GFS: 74.4 to 80.1%, UM: 70.0 to 77.9%). In particular, it was confirmed that the improvement effect at the high concentration grade was excellent.

  • Recently, high ozone episode occurred frequently in Korea. Moreover ozone episode occurred not only in the city but also in background area where local anthropogenic sources are not important. It analyzed frequency exceeding 100ppb ozone at air quality monitoring stations in Seoul and rural area during 1995-2004. This paper reports on the use of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system to predict hourly ozone levels. Domain resolutions of 30km, 10km, 3.333km (innermost) have been employed for this study. Summer periods in June 2004 have been simulated and the predicted results have been compared to data for metropolitan and rural air quality monitoring stations. The model performance has been evaluated with measured data through a range of statistical measures. Although, the CMAQ model reproduces the ozone temporal spatial trends it was not able to simulate the peak magnitudes consistently.

  • To investigate the effect of NOx and VOCs(volatile organic compounds) on the generation of high ozone episode, examined the hourly variations of ozone, NOx and VOCs concentrations, and calculated the ozone isopleth about maximum ozone concentrations using OZIPR which was presented by U. S. EPA at three sites in Busan. There was some difference by the sites, but decreasing VOCs concentration was effective for reduction of ozone at 22 July, the episode day of 2005. In the year 2006, the episode day was 8 August and the variations of NOx and VOCs concentration was little than variation of ozone. So it was estimated that the photochemical production of ozone was low than transportation of ozone. And the result of the OZIPR modeling was that decreasing VOCs concentration was effective for reduction of ozone.

  • On January 1, 2005, the Special Act on Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement, known as the Blue Sky 21 Program, entered into force. This Special Act is aimed at reducing the annual average concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ to $40{\mu}g/m^3$ and 22ppb, respectively, from their current levels of $76{\mu}g/m^3$ and 36ppb, within the next 10 years. While the main focus of the Act is to reduce $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ emissions, the government also anticipates that these reductions would lessen high ozone occurrences and improve visibility. However, reducing local PM emissions would not decrease $PM_{10}$ concentrations as much as expected since other significant sources, such as continental inflow and/or secondary formation from photochemical reactions, exist. This is corroborated by the fact that $PM_{10}$ in the greater Seoul Metropolitan area during the ozone season is mostly in the form of $PM_{2.5}$, which is secondarily formed on a regional scale. Furthermore, many modeling results indicate so-called '$NO_x$ disbenefits,' referring to the fostering of an increase in ozone concentrations from a decrease in $NO_x$ emissions, over an extensive area. In this paper, the current status of air quality in the Seoul Metropolitan area is reviewed, and several other issues, including the effect of long-range transport, photochemical characteristics, and tasks for successful implementation of the Special Act are discussed.

  • Concentration of Air Quality Models (CMAQ) has a deep connection with emissions and wind fields. In particular the wind field is highly affected by local topography and plays an important role in transport and dispersion of contaminants from the pollution sources. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of interpolation on Air quality model. This study was designed to evaluate enhancement of MM5 and CMAQ predictions by using Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA), the SONDE data and the national meteorological station and the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The alternative meteorological fields predicted with and without MODIS data were used to simulate spatial and temporal variations of ozone in combined with CMAQ on June 2006. The result of this study indicated that data assimilation using MODIS data provided an attractive method for generating realistic meteorological fields and dispersion fields of ozone in the Korea peninsular, because MODIS data in 10 km domain are grid horizontally and vertically. In order to ensure the success of Air quality model, it is necessary to FDDA using MODIS data.

  • Vegetation index information is an important figure that is used in many fields such as landscape architecture, urban planning, and environment. Vegetation may vary slightly in vegetation vitality depending on photosynthesis and chlorophyll content. In this study, a range of vegetation worth preserving in the Taehwa River water system was determined, and hyperspectral images of drones were acquired (August, October), and the results were presented through DVI(Normalized Defference Vegetation Index), EVI(Enhanced Vegetation Index), PRI(Photochemical Reflectance Index), ARI (Anthocyanin Reflectance Index) index analysis. In addition, field spectral data and VRS-GPS(Virtual Reference System-GPS) surveys were performed to ensure the quality and location accuracy of the spectral band. As a result of the analysis, NDVI and EVI showed low vegetation vitality in October, -0.165 and -0.085, respectively, and PRI and ARI increased to 0.011 and 7.588 in October, respectively. For general vegetation vitality, it was suggested that NDVI and EVI analysis were effectively performed, and PRI and ARI were thought to be effective in analyzing detailed characteristics of plants by spectral band. It is expected that it can be widely used for park design and landscape information modeling by using drone image information construction and vegetation information.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of hydrophobic surfaces developed using a stereolithography-based additive-manufacturing technique. The additive manufacturing technique can be used to manufacture objects with complex geometries from computer-aided design data. Several additive manufacturing methods, such as selective laser sintering, fused deposition modeling, stereolithography apparatus (SLA), and inkjet-based system, have been developed. The SLA is a form of three-dimensional printing technology used to create prototypes, patterns, and production parts in successive layers through photochemical processes. Light causes chemical monomers and oligomers to cross-link together to form objects composed of polymers. Moreover, this method is economical for fabricating surfaces with high output resolution and quality. Here, we fabricate various surfaces using different shapes using an SLA. The surfaces with micro-patterns are fabricated for 10 cases, including the biomimetic surface. The fabricated surfaces with various micro-patterns are evaluated for hydrophobicity performance based on the static contact angle. The contact angle is measured three times for each case, and the averaged value is used. The results indicate that the arrangements in a staggered structure have a larger contact angle than those in a line when the same micro-pattern is applied. Moreover, the mimetic surfaces exhibit more hydrophobic characteristics than those of artificial micro-patterns.

  • Objectives: Photochemical ozone pollution is associated with increased mortality risk. This study aims to assess the population exposure to ozone according to population characteristics for high ozone days in the Busan metropolitan region (BMR). Methods: The ozone exposure assessment in this study was performed using the WRF-CMAQ simulated ozone concentrations and the population data in the BMR. The settled and daytime population and their activity were considered to conduct the static and dynamic ozone exposure assessment. Results: Applying a static exposure assessment, in case that high ozone occurred throughout Busan area, the highest exposure levels were evaluated in urban neighborhoods. In case of ozone pollution in outer Busan, because sensitive groups have been relatively higher exposure, this case was also evaluated as part of that should not be overlooked. The dynamic exposure was higher than static exposure because the number of population exposed to ozone of high concentration is increased. This approach is important in a regard consider that daytime population distribution when high ozone occur. Conclusion: This study shows the different population exposure according to various ozone distributions for each episode day. Considering demographic characteristic such as population density and activity should be important to understanding the population exposure assessment when ozone pollution occurs.

  • A mass balance/photochemical modeling approach was used to evaluate the sea-to-air dimethyl sulfide (DMS) fluxes in tropical regions and part of the Southern Ocean. The flux determinations were based on 10 airborne observations by ACE 1 transit flights (i.e., Flights 4-9 and 29-32). The DMS flux values for the tropical regions ranged from 1.0 to 7.4 $\mu$mole/$m^2$/day with an average estimate of 4.2$\pm$2.3 $\mu$mole/$m^2$/day. The seasonal variations in the DMS flux predicted for the equatorial Pacific Ocean based on atmospheric DMS measurements were not entirely consistent with those derived from seawater DMS measurements were not entirely consistent with those derived from seawater DMS measurements reported in previous literature. Inhomogeneities in the DMS flux field were found to cause significant shifts in the atmospheric DMS levels even in the same sampling location. Accordingly, no definitive statement can be made at this stage regarding systematic differences or agreements in the DMS flux estimates from the two approaches. Moreover, this study strongly suggests that DMS oxidation is the most likely dominant source of SO$_2$in tropical regions, which is also supported by another set of compiled observations. Finally, these SO$_2$observations indicate that, when significant data was available for both the boundary and buffer layers, the vertical SO$_2$gradient between these two zones was primarily negative.

  • The estimation of a biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC, especially isoprene) and the influence of isoprene emissions on ozone concentrations in the Greater Busan Area (GBA) were carried out based on a numerical modeling approach during a high ozone episode. The BVOC emissions were estimated using a biogenic emission information system (BEIS v3.14) with vegetation data provided by the forest geographical information system (FGIS), land use data provided by the environmental geographical information system (EGIS), and meteorological data simulated by the MM5. Ozone simulation was performed by two sets of simulation scenarios: (1) without (CASE1) and (2) with isoprene emissions (CASE2). The isoprene emission (82 ton $day^{-1}$) in the GBA was estimated to be the most dominant BVOC followed by methanol (56) and carbon monoxide (28). Largest impacts of isoprene emissions on the ozone concentrations (CASE2-CASE1) were predicted to be about 4 ppb in inland locations where a high isoprene was emitted and to be about 2 ppb in the downwind and/or convergence regions of wind due to both the photochemical reaction of ozone precursors (e.g., high isoprene emissions) and meteorological conditions (e.g., local transport).
