TiO2 박막을 이용한 광촉매반응의 응용 (Application of Photocatalytic Reaction Using TiO2 Thin Film)

  • Photocatalytic reaction using $TiO_2$ thin film was applied for the inactivation of coliform bacteria and the degradation of formic acid. UV processes coupled with and without $TiO_2$ were tested for the river water samples. It took 5 and 15 minutes, respectively, to obtain 99% destruction of coliform bacteria in the total coliform test, which demonstrated the effectiveness of the photocatalytic reaction. Complete degradation of formic acid determined by TOC analysis was observed in 20 minutes by ozone/photocatalysis, while formic acid was degraded as little as about 20% during the first 100 minutes by ozone treatment alone. When ozone was supplied to the $TiO_2/UV$ system, however, it provided a synergetic effect for the degradation of formic acid.

Synthesis and comparison of pure TiO2 and metal/non-metal doped TiO2 as a photocatalyst

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered hazardous air pollutants and these are emitted from building materials and household products. VOCs can cause global warming as well as human sickness, and even cancer. Photocatalysis provides a way of converting VOCs into harmless materials. Various researches have shown that $TiO_2$ is the most efficient photocatalysts due to its excellent activity. In this study, metal/non-metal doped $TiO_2$ particles are synthesized for the enhancement of the photocatalytic properties of pure $TiO_2$. By metal/non-metal doping, band gap energies of prepared samples were analyzed by UV/Visible spectrophotometer. The physical and chemical properties of synthesized powder were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, by BET for measuring their specific surface area, and by XRD for phase identification and particle size determination. Degradation ability for p-xylene was evaluated through monitoring the concentration in a closed chamber. Relation between their properties and decomposition abilities for VOC were evaluated based on the experimental results.

  • Quantitative evaluation of photocatalytic activity of oxide nanoparticles in aqueous solution is quite challenging in that the kinetic reaction rate is determined by a complicated interplay among various limiting factors such as light scattering and absorption, diffusion and adsorption of reactants in condensed liquid phase, photoexcited charge separation and recombination rate, and the exact nature of active sites determined by detailed morphology and crystallinity of nanocrystals. Here, we present our simple experimental results showing that the kinetic regime of a typical photocatalytic degradation experiment over UV-irradiated $TiO_2$ nanoparticles in aqueous solution is in that dominated by the photoactivity of $TiO_2$ and its concentration. This result lays a firm ground of using the measured kinetic reaction rate in evaluating photocatalytic efficiency of oxide nanocrystals under evaluation.

  • This article deals with various photochemical processes occurring at $TiO_2$ surface and its applications in practical living conditions. In the first part, we present an overview of $TiO_2$ photocatalysis under weak W illumination with a special emphasis on bactericidal and detoxification properties of $TiO_2$ films. The second part deals with the photoinduced super hydrophilic TiCt surftce which has a wide commercial applications. In the last part, we present our recent work on boehmite-based super hydrophobic surfaces containing small amount of $TiO_2$ to obtain self-cleaning effect.

Control of postharvest fungal spoilage of kiwifruit with TiO$_2$ photocatalytic ozonation.

  • TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation was attempted to disinfect fungal pathogens causing postharvest spoilage of kiwifruits and to decompose fungicide residuals on kiwifruits. TiO$_2$Photocatalytic ozonation process synergistically degraded organic compound and inhibited conidial germination of the fungal pathogen compared to single treatment of ozonation or photocatalysis. The efficient control of fungal spoilage and degradation of residual fungicide on kiwifruits indicate that TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation is a very attractive method for postharvest disease control of kiwifruits as an alternative to fungicides application.

  • 산업발달과 더불어 급속한 속도로 오염되고 있는 환경문제는 날로 두드려져 그린하우스 효과, 산성비 등의 출현과 더불어 세계 곳곳의 기후이변을 야기하였다. 그 원인은 지구상에서 빠른 산업화 및 과학화로 인하여 화석연료의 과다사용과 그 매연으로 인한 지구환경의 불균형을 초래하였기 때문이며, 지구온난화는 그 좋은 예라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 지구환경 보전문제로서 새로운 유독성 오염물질의 처리기술이 요구되며 에너지 고갈을 대비한 비에너지 소비성 분해기술의 확보가 시급한 실정이다. 그러므로 태양에너지와 같은 무공해 에너지원을 driving force 로 활용하여 유독성 오염물질을 상온에서 완전 분해하여 전혀 무해한 물질로 분해하는 시스템의 개발은 필수적이다.(중략)

  • 악취물질 중 특히 황계열 물질인 Dimethyl disulfide(DMDS)는 광촉매 산화 시 촉매비 활성에 의해 촉매의 효율이 떨어진다. 이는 Dimethyl disulfide(DMDS) 분해과정에서 발생되는 중간생성물이 촉매 표면에 강하게 흡착되기 때문이다. 이러한 비활성을 해결하기 위해 촉매를 재생하여 사용할 수 있다. 'Burning out'에 의한 재생은 촉매 표면에 흡착된 일부 유기 종들을 배출시켜 촉매능을 53% 회복시켰다.

  • Among the many studies of carbon-based nanomaterials, carbon-based dots (CDs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their large surface area, intrinsic low-toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, high solubility, and low-cost with environmentally friendly routes, as well as their ability for modification with other nanomaterials. CDs have several applications in biosensing, photocatalysis, bioimaging, and nanomedicine. In addition, the fascinating electrochemical properties of CDs, including high active surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, electrocatalytic activity, high porosity, and adsorption capability, make them potential candidates for electrochemical sensing materials. This paper reviews the recent developments and synthesis of CDs and their composites for the proposed electrochemical sensing platforms. The electrochemical principles and future perspective and challenges of electrochemical biosensors are also discussed based on CDs-nanocomposites.

Synthesis and characterization of visible light active photocatalytic $TiO_2$

  • Using thermal hydrolysis and hydrothermal treatment, photocatalytic $TiO_2$ powders were synthesized. During the synthesis, the addition of other transition metals such as iron, copper, etc., affected the photocatalytic capability of synthesized powders, and enabled the activation by visible light. To enhance photocatalytic capacity of gas phase decomposition, the rate-determining adsorption rate of pollutant gases were improved via surface modification of $TiO_2$ powders. The surface modifiers were implanted using mechanochemical synthesis of dopants and photocatalytic powders.
