Liquid Crystal Aligning Capabilities Using the in-situ Photo-alignment Method on Photo-crosslinkable Polymer Surface (광중합 가능한 폴리머 표면에 in-situ 광배향법을 이용한 액정배향특성)

  • Aligning capabilities for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using a in-situ photodimerization method on various Photo-crosslinkable Polyimide (Pl) based polymer and blending photopolymer surfaces were investigated. High pretilt angle of the NLC can be measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on a photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surface containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chol) group, respectively. However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the blending photopolymer (Pl and cinnamate materials) surfaces. Consequently, the pretilt angle of the NLC generated on the photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surfaces using the in-situ photodimerization method was higher than that of the blending photopolymers.

  • We synthesized a new photo-crosslinkable polymer (polyimide (PI)-chalcone-biphenyl (BP)) and liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for nematic (N) LC with obliquely polarized UV exposure on a photo-crosslinkable polymer were studied. The high pretilt angle in NLC was obtained by polarized UV exposure on a PI-Chal-BP surface for 3 min. The high pretilt angle generated in NLC is attributed to the biphenyl moieties and the photo-dimerized chalclone group of a photopolymer. Also, good thermal stability of a PI-Chal-BP were obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450$^{\circ}C$. Finally, good voltage-transmittance curves and response time were observed by UV exposure on a PI-Chal-BP surface for 3min.

Spacing Method Suitable for Flexible Cholesteric LCDs

  • In order to find out LC cell spacing method suitable for flexible cholesteric LCDs with high mechanical stability, we carried out bending and mechanical shock tests by using various spacing techniques: bead spacer, photo spacer, polymer wall with bead spacer and polymer wall with photo spacer. As a result, it was found that the spacing method using polymer wall incorporated with photo spacer is the best for flexible cholesteric LCDs in terms of mechanical stability. The investigation is discussed in detail.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle and alignment stability for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with obliquely polarized UV exposure on the three kinds of photo-polymer. High pretilt angle of the NLC was obtained by polarized UV exposure on a PM4Ch surface for 1 min. But, the low pretilt angle of he NLC on a PVCi surface was observed. The pretilt angle generated is attributed ot the photosensitivity by the long side chaining of photo-polymer. Also, a good thermal stability of the three kinds of photo-polymer were obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 300$^{\circ}C$. Finally, the good LC aligning capabilities using the photodimerization method were observed by annealing-treatment until 150$^{\circ}C$.

  • Utilizing the existence of the induction period in photo-polymerization, we propose a new injection method of photo-polymerizable, thermocrosslinking hydrogels made of di-acrylated Pluronic F127 (DA-PF127). This method can solve the problem of fast dissolution of thermal gelation as a scaffold and the disadvantages of the existing injection method that photo-polymerize di-acrylated Pluronic polymer after injection using optical fiber. Injectable gelation of DA-PF127 by the proposed method was demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. The enhanced stability by this novel photo-polymerization strategy was confirmed by the more sustained release of loaded protein as well as the prolonged degradation time of the hydrogels.

  • Here we report the effect of photo-spacer and polymer wall on the mechanical stability of the polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (PSFLC) system. A better bending tolerance of the PSFLC cell was obtained when the polymer wall was formed parallel to the rubbing direction. In addition, the effect of the distance between photo-spacer columns as well as that of the distance between polymer wall columns on the mechanical stability of the liquid crystal was examined.

  • We developed novel polymer materials composed of thermoresponsive pNIPAAm main chain and photo-resnposive side chains of spirobenzopyran, and analyzed the photoresponsive characteristrics of the aqueous solutions of these copolymers. Further, we prepared various photoresponsive hydrogels composed of the copolymer, and investigated the effect of light irradiation on their properties. As a result, the copolymer exhibited quite unique response to light irradiation and the change in temperature and pH. Especially the drastic photo-induced dehydration was observed in low pH conditions, and photo-induced micro-relief formation was demonstrated using the hydrogel layer composed of the polymer.
