  • In this study, photo-cuarable urethane methacrylate oligomers were synthesized from polyether type polyol (PP series, GP series), isocyanate (2,4-toluene diisocyanate) and hydroxy acrylate (hydroxypropyl methacrylate). We measured basic property including color, viscosity and refractive index of resulting urethane methacrylate. Also we measured tensile strength, elongation, and Young's modulus after photo curing. Photo curing speed was investigated using photo-DSC (TA instrument). In the case of similar polyol structure, as the molecular weight of polyol is increased, tensile strength, Young's modulus, curing rate were decreased, but elongation was increased. As the number of functionality of urethane methacrylate oligomer is increased, tensile strength, Young's modulus, curing rate were increased, but elongation was decreased.

  • In order to study the radiation curing behavior of poly(ethylene glycol 400) dimethacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, we investigated the influence of temperature and photoinitiator concentration by photo-DSC. As the number of ethylene glycol unit, the concentration of photoinitiator, and the reaction temperature increased, the reaction speed of PEG400DMA and EGDMA increased. Although the reaction speed of PEG400DMA was lower than EGDMA, the overall conversion of PEG400DMA was high.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the flexural properties and perform the Weibull analysis of photo-curing three-dimensional (3D) printing resin. Methods: Photo-curing temporary resin (3D polymer) was used as a printing resin. Specimens (65 × 10 × 3.3 ㎣) were prepared following the ISO 20975-1 guidelines and according to the different printing orientations using a digital light processing 3D printer (D2 120; Dentium). The flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus, and work of fracture (WOF) were measured using a universal testing machine (Instron 3344; Instron) at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Results: In this study, the 0° orientation exhibited higher FS and WOF than the 45° orientation. Significant differences were found among the printing orientations (p<0.05). Specimens printed at the 0° orientation were the most accurate. In the Weibull analysis, 0° showed the greatest Weibull modulus (m), which represents a higher reliability. Conclusion: 3D printing should be selected and used by considering flexural properties, size accuracy, and reliability.

  • Projection stereolithography is an additive manufacturing method that uses beam projection to cure the photo-reactive resin used. The light source of a cross-section layer-form illuminates photo-curable resin for building a three-dimensional (3D) model. This method has high accuracy and a fast molding speed because the processing unit is a face instead of a dot. This study describes a Scalable Projection Stereolithography 3D Printing System for improving the accuracy of the stereolithography. In a conventional projection 3D printer, when printing a small sized model, many pixels are not used in the projection or curing. The proposed system solves this problem through an optical adjustment, and keeps using the original image as possible as filling the whole projection area. The experimental verification shows that the proposed system can maintain the highest level of precision regardless of the output size.

  • The purpose of present study was to determine whether different kinds of curing lights can alter microtensile bond strength(MTBS) of class I cavity pulpal and axial wall specimens in primary molar. Thirty clean mandibular 2nd primary molar's occlusal enamel were removed and class I cavity, size of $2{\times}4{\times}2mm$ was prepared. Dentin bonding agent was applied according to manufacturer's manual. Each group was cured with Halogen Curing Unit, Plasma Curing Unit and LED Curing Unit. Composite resin was bulk filled and photo cured with same curing unit. MTBS specimens which size is $0.7{\times}0.7{\times}4mm$ were prepared with low speed saw. Specimens were coded by their curing lights and wall positions (Halogen - Axial wall group, Halogen - Pulpal wall group, Plasma - Axial wall group, Plasma - Pulpal wall group, LED - Axial wall group, LED - Pulpal walt group). MTBS were tested at 1 mm/min cross Head speed by Universal Testing Machine. Fractured surface and bonding surface was observed with SEM. T-test between axial and pulpal specimens in each curing lights, one-way ANOVA among different curing light specimens in each wall positions were done. Weibull distribution analysis was done. The results were as follows : Mean MTBS of pulpal wall specimens were significantly greater than that of axial wall specimens at each curing units(p<.05). There was no significant difference in the MTBS among three curing units at axial wall and pulpal wall. In Weibull distribution, pulpal wall specimens were more homogeneous than axial wall specimens.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the results of argon laser for 5 seconds, argon laser for 10 seconds, and visible light for 40 seconds photo-polymerization in compressive strength, microhardness, curing depth, temperature rising during polymerization, and polymerization shrinkage. Hybrid type composite resin(Z-100) and compomer(Dyract) were used to be compared. The compressive strength was measured by an Instron(1mm/min cross head speed) in 60 specimens and the microhardness of the surface was expressed by Vickers Hardness Number(VHN) in 30 specimens. The curing depth was evaluated comparing the different values of upper and lower VHN according to irradiation time and thickness for the light source polymerization in 60 specimens. The temperature rising during photopolymerization was observed by the temperature change with thermocouple sensitizer beneath 40 specimens at the argon laser for 10 seconds and visible light 40 seconds irradiation. The polymerization shinkage was evaluated by calculating the decrease of % volume by using a dilatometer in 30 specimens. The results were as follows ; 1. In the case of compressive strength, the argon laser polymerization groups were higher than visible light group in Z-100 (p<0.05). In Dyract, the argon laser 5 seconds group did not show a significant difference with the visible light 40 seconds group. The argon laser 10 seconds group showed the markedly low value when compared with other groups (p<0.05) 2. In microhardness, Z-100 was better than Dyract when comparing by VHNs (p<0.05); however, there was not a significant difference between two materials in the visible light 40 seconds group and the argon laser 10 seconds group. 3. In the study of curing depth, Z-100 showed the consistent polymerization in argon laser irradiation because there was no difference in the VHN decrease according to the thickness change. Over the thickness control, the results did not show a significant difference between visible light and argon laser group in Z-100; however, in the case of Dyract, the visible light 40 seconds group was better than the argon laser groups(p<0.05). 4. There was a significant difference between the two materials in temperature rising during polymerization (p<0.05), but not a significant difference between irradiation times, 5. There was not a significant difference between the two materials in polymerization shrink age. The argon laser 5 seconds group was smaller than the other groups (p<0.05). It could be concluded that Z-100 polymerization was recommended to use the argon laser for reduction of the irradiation time while Dyract was recommended to use the visible light polymerization.

  • Production of eco-friendly and biologically harmless materials is strongly required in all industries. In particular, reducing volatile organic compounds in coating processes is extremely important to secure worker's safety. During recent two decades, extensive research works on water-borne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) have been continuously developed as an alternative to solvent-borne polyurethane. However, PUD was shown inferior mechanical properties to the organic solvent-borne polyurethane due to a limit to the molecular weight increase, which resulted in the limit of applications. To overcome this drawback, several approaches have been examined such as polymer blends and thermal/radiation induced crosslinking. Among these methods, the radiation curing system was suitable for industrialization because of the high crosslinking density and fast curing speed. In this study, we overcame the drawback for PUD via introducing benzophenone radiation curable units to PUD. We synthesized PUD films which possessed good dispersion in water for 30 days, increased Tg and Td more than $5^{\circ}C$ after UV curing film as well as improved young's modulus more than double.

  • According to its merits about high curing speed and low emission of volatile organic compounds, UV curable inorganic-organic coating technology has been developed as an alternative for toxic and carcinogenic chromate-based treatments for years. It is consistently observed that ultra-thin films offer excellent corrosion protection as well as paint adhesion to metals. Based on the tetra-ethylorthosilicate(TEOS) and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane(MPTMS), inorganic sol was synthesized and formed hybrid networks with UV curable acrylic monomer, 6-hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA), trimethylolpropane triacrylate(TMPTA), pentaerylthritol triacrylate(PETA). Several methods were used to test their properties such as salt spray test, potentiodynamic measurement, tape peel test, etc. It was shown that anti-corrosive property and stability of storage were affected by the molecular ratios of inorganic and organic compounds. It was not only the stability of storage, but had a excellent anti-corrosive, paint adhesive, and anti-solvent properties in a final molar ratios of 0.6/0.04/0.86/0.005 (TEOS/MPTMS/Acetone/HNO3) and 0.08/0.106/0.081/0.02 (TMPTA/HDDA/PETA/photo initiator).
