Pretilt Angel Generation and Alignment Stability for Nematic Liquid Crystal Using a Photodimerization Method (광중합법을 이용한 네마틱액정의 배향 안정성 및 프리틸트각의 발생)

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle and alignment stability for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with obliquely polarized UV exposure on the three kinds of photo-polymer. High pretilt angle of the NLC was obtained by polarized UV exposure on a PM4Ch surface for 1 min. But, the low pretilt angle of he NLC on a PVCi surface was observed. The pretilt angle generated is attributed ot the photosensitivity by the long side chaining of photo-polymer. Also, a good thermal stability of the three kinds of photo-polymer were obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 300$^{\circ}C$. Finally, the good LC aligning capabilities using the photodimerization method were observed by annealing-treatment until 150$^{\circ}C$.

  • The viewing angle characteristics of amorphous(a)-twisted nematic(TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on poly(vinyl)cinnamate (PVC) surfaces with photo polymerrization were investigated. It was found that the threshold voltage increases with increasing the polymerization of PVC surfaces. That the domain size of a-TN-LCD is affected by the surface crystallization with increasing the photo polymerization of the photo-alignment film. We observed that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD increased with increasing the photo polymerization on PVC surfaces. Finally, we consider that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD on PVC surfaces is large compared to a-TN-LCD on polyimide(PI) surface.

  • Electroluminescent polymers have attracted considerable attention due to possible applications as large-area light-emitting displays. There have been many efforts to improve the electroluminescent efficiency. To design the polymer with high efficiency, it is necessary to understand the luminescent mechanism. In this report, we have investigated two-photon absorption(2PA) characteristics of highly efficient electroluminescent polymer using various techniques such as nonlinear transmission, 2PA-induced photoluminescence(2PA-PL) and 2PA-induced photoconductivity(2PA-PC). Synthesis and Characterizations of Bis-Spiropyran Derivatives

  • We synthesized three different derivatives of bis-spiropyran using simple organic reactions with high yields. BSP1, a derivative of bis-spiropyran having a connection at the position 6' and BSP2, a derivative of bis-spiropyran having a connection at the position 5 and BSP3, a derivative of bis-spiropyran containing a dithienylethene group between two spiropyran moieties were synthesized. The optical properties of BSPs were characterized. UV-Vis spectra showed that BSPs exhibit reversible photo-isomerization and the efficiency of photo-isomerization is highly dependent on the position of nitro group. BSPs having nitro group at para position of hydroxy group showed the higher efficiency of photo-isomerization that the one having nitro group at ortho position. The optical microscope images obtained under ultraviolet or visible light exposure demonstrated that the formation of nanorods can be reversibly controlled by optical signal.

Preparation of Colour Filter Photo Resists for Improving Colour Purity in Liquid Crystal Displays by Synthesis of Polymeric Binder and Treatment of Pigments

  • Liquid crystal display (LCD) devices contain a colour filter which can visualise colour images by transmitting or absorbing light. Colour properties of LCD mainly depend on colour materials such as pigments and polymeric binders. In this paper, colour properties were studied to improve colour quality of LCD. Generally, the colour properties can be classified into three categories which are colour purity, brightness and contrast ratio. For this study, photo resists were prepared by treatment of pigments and synthesis of polymeric binder. The treated pigments were dispersed and formulated with additives for preparing a photo resist that could be used for manufacturing colour filters. As a result of what we studied, type, mixture ratio and concentration of pigments were very important to improve colour purity of LCD device.

Photo-catalytic Properties of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Sensitized with In2S3 under Visible-light Irradiation

  • In this work, we report on the preparation of the anodically-grown $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays sensitized with $In_2S_3$ nanoparticles by using the SILAR (successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction) process. We evaluate the photo-catalytic properties of the prepared hetero-structures under visible-light illumination. The results reveal that the $TiO_2/In_2S_3$ system has enhanced photo-catalytic characteristics including higher chopping height. Improved performance of the heterojunction is attributed to the narrower band gap of $In_2S_3$ and its favorable position within the conduction band relative to that of $TiO_2$.

  • A vector-photo is a photography which contain image and 5W1H information. Objects pictured and an image in a vector-photo can be linked by 5W1H information in the vector-photo. This study discuss a positioning module to link between vector-photos and 3D BIM model. The module developed in this study can be utilized in a system that can link the vector-photos with objects in BIM model.

Ellipso-Microscopic Observation of Titanium Surface under UV-Light Irradiation

  • The ellipso-microscopic observation of a titanium surface undergoing anodization in $0.05mol\;dm^{-3}$ of $H_2SO_4$ was conducted. During irradiation by ultra-violet (UV) light with a wavelength of 325 nm, the titanium surface allowed for the flow of a photo-induced current and showed up as a bright, patch-like image on an ellipso-microscopic view. The brightness and patch-pattern in the image changed with flowing photo-induced current. The changes in the brightness and the image corresponded to the formation and/or degradation of titanium oxide due to the photo-electrochemical reaction of the oxide. An in situ monitoring using the ellipso-microscope revealed that the film change was dependent on the irradiation light power, by UV-light increases the anodic current and results in the initiation of pitting at lower potentials as compared with the non-irradiated condition.

  • The aim of this study is the confirmation of the coating uniformity affected by the surface tension and wall attachment angle in a slit-coater model. In this work, we use the commercial code (Fluent) to solve the two-phase flow formed with air and photo resist numerically. The results show that the surface tension is the most important factor to determine the coating efficiency in the view of coating uniformity, and the coating uniformity is 2% for our slit-coater model and conditions. To improve the coating uniformity, it is in need of minimization of the sidewall effect of slit-coater.

  • Many pictures are taken in construction sites. However, the pictures are not being managed effectively. In this study, the need for vector-photo have been raised which combines pictures and 5W1H information, and the vector-photo format have been suggested. A test module and user-interface have been developed for validating an utility of the format proposed.
