  • In this study, we investigated the presence of nitrogen, phosphorus, ions, heavy metals and other contaminations in the water stream and soil of the forest watershed with different geology and vegetations for one year from October 2004 to September 2005. Most of the nitrogen oxide in the soil was in the form of $NO_3^-$, and it appeared that nitrogen contents decreased as the soil depth increased. Nitrogen contents was highest in the basalt area showing 13.3 mg/g in the surface soil and 7.40 mg/g in the subsoil. Phosphorous contents showed no significant variations depending on the soil depth and was higher in the intermediate soil layer(60 cm) than in surface soil (30 cm) in granite and metamorphic rock areas. Nitrogenous compound in the soil water was 8.03 mg/L in the granite area of coniferous forest and 14.79 mg/L in the andesite area of the deciduous forest. Nitrogenous compound in the stream water was 5.53 mg/L in October and 6.99 mg/L in January in the granite area of the coniferous forest and $3.61\sim5.11$ mg/L in the andesite area of the deciduous forest. Phosphates in runoff and stream water were similar in coniferous with in deciduous forests, showing a slight increase(0.090$\sim$0.179 mg/L) in the basalt area. In the coniferous forest, pH showed a significant positive correlation with EC, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ at p < 0.01, and showed a negative correlation with S-Fe and S-Al. Electroconductivity showed a significant correlation of 0.601 with $Ca^{2+}$ and of -0.586 with $NO_3^-$ at p<0.01, and showed a significant correlation of 0.301 with $SO_4^{2-}$ and of -0.295 with S-Fe at p < 0.05. In the deciduous forest, pH showed a positive correlation with $Ca^{2+}$ at p < 0.05, and showed a negative correlation with $K^+$, S-Fe and S-Al at p < 0.01. Electroconductivity showed a significant positive correlation with $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ at p < 0.05 and with $NO_3^-$ at p < 0.01.

  • This study suggested a new method to stabilize molten salt wastes generated from the pyre-process for the spent fuel treatment. Using conventional sol-gel process, $SiO_2-Al_2O_3-P_2O_5$ (SAP) inorganic material that is reactive to metal chlorides were prepared. In this paper, the reactivity of SAP with the metal chlorides at $650{\sim}850$, the thermal stability of reaction products and their leach-resistance under the PCT-A test method were investigated. Alkali metal chlorides were converted into metal aluminosilicate($LixAlxSi1-_xO_{2-x}$) and metal phosphate($Li_3PO_4\;and\;Cs_2AlP_3O_{10}$) While alkali earth and rare earth chlorides were changed into only metal phosphates ($Sr_5(PO_4)_3Cl\;and\;CePO_4$). The conversion rate was about $96{\sim}99%$ at a salt waste/SAP weight ratio of 0.5 and a weight loss up to $1100^{\circ}C$ measured by thermogravimetric analysis were below 1wt%. The leach rates of Cs and Sr under the PCT-A test condition were about $10^{-2}g/m^2\;day\;and\;10^{-4}g/m^2\;day$. From these results, it could be concluded that SAP can be considered as an effective stabilizer for metal chlorides and the method using SAP will give a chance to reduce the volume of salt wasteform for the final disposal through further researches.

  • A survey was carried out from July to December in 1979 and 1982 for the investigation of oceanographic conditions and phytoplankton in Seogwipo coastal area. Although a peculiar coastal sea water is formed by in flowing of fresh water, this is developed mainly in summer and disappeared or weakened in its strength after November. However, this coastal sea water covers only the surface while in mid and bottom layer open sea water is approached to the coast. Therefore, coastal and open sea water appears simultaneously in narrow sea area. Mean values of nutrient concentrates on surface layer during investigating period were $3.72{\sim}16.34{\mu}g-at/l$ in silicate, $1.98{\sim}5.53{\mu}g-at/l$ in nitrate and $0.34{\sim}0.90{\mu}g-at/l$ in phosphate. These showed slight differences among places but in general coastal side were lower than open sea side. Phosphates which is the lowest in concentrates among nutrients in Seogwipo coastal area shows almost similar value with Jinhae Bay but higher than open sea water around 10 mile south of Seogwipo. In general, seasonal changes of nutrients in investigating period shows a tendency of the lowest in October, increasing in November, and again slight decrease in December. As a phytoplankton fauna, 48 species, 1 variety and 2 breeds of Diatoms, 29 species, 3 varieties and 1 breed fo Dinoflagellates, and 1 species each of Chroococcus and Trichoceratium were found. Monthly predominant species are all neritic: Rhizosolenia sp. and Ceratium sp. in August, Chaetoceros sp., Ceratium sp. and Peridinium sp. in September, Astrionella sp. and Peridinium sp. in October, Astrionella sp., Navicula sp. and Chaetoceros sp. in November Among these, Rhizosolenia alata f. gracillima in August and Astrionella gracillima in November are remarkable predominant.

  • 1 The coastal area between Youngdo and Jodo was a common coastal water not much different from other coastal waters before the construction of the breakwater between them. 2. The breakwater between the two islands shuts off the tidal currents and divides the area . into the two small isolated bays to create quite different environments. 3. To understand the differences between then, present study examined some environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, transparency, and major nutrients, phosphates, sillicates and nitrites and the phytoand zooplankton. The samplings were carried out monthly from March 1976 to February 1977 at 4 stations: 2 stations in each bay. 4. Some differences were observed in the environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and transparency between the two bays. 5. The distribution and occurence of nutrient salts of the two bays were distinctly different each other. Northern Bay had $138\%$ of nutrients in comparison with Southern Bay. 6. Phytoplankton in Northern Bay was about $200\%$ plentier than in Southern Bay. 7. Zooplankton in Southern Bay was about $180\%$ richer than in Northern Bay. 8. One of the pollution indicator species, Synedra ulna, was observed in Northern Bay and the occurence of Euglena sp. and ciliates were much higher in Northern Bay than in Southern Bay, but, in contrast, Sagitta sp. was more abundant in Southern Bay than in the other. 9. The areas of the two bays seem to be in its way to eutrophication especially in Northern Bay. 10. The two bays have been differentiated enough to identify each other.

  • The study involved determination of resistance levels of spider mites to Metasystox, Folidol and C-8514 using slide dip technique: a feid trial of alternative acaricides using an O/P resistant strain. 1. Resistant strains of two-spotted spider mite( Tetranychus urticae Koch) were collected from Taegu, Kyungsan, Chunchun, Yesan, Suwon, Osan and Chungju, and kept in the glasshouse through the experiments. Resistant strains of European red mite (Panonychus ulmi Koch) were collected from Chungju, Taegu, Yesan, Chunchun, Suwon and Whasung, and Wonju susceptible was collected. Immediately after collection, tests were applied. All strains except susceptible populations had regularly been sprayed with Organo-phosphates including Parathion (or Folidol), Metasystox, Phenkapton and Trithion for more than the ten Bast years; and Organo-chlorines such as Kelthane and C-8514 more than five years. Comparisons of the resistant strains and susceptible strains at the $LC_50$ values are as follows: a. With Metasystox, resistance levels of the Chungju, Taegu, Yesan, Chunchun and Suwon resistant strains of P. ulmi were respectively, 96,52,4,3 and 2, times as resistant as the Wonju susceptible strain. b. With Folidol, resistance levels of the Chungju, Chunchun, Yesan, Whasung and Suwon strains of P. ulmi showed respectively, 126, 48, 33, 30 and 6-fold resistance levels over the susceptible strain. c. With C-8514, resistance levels of the Taegu, Suwon, Whasung and Chungju strains of P. ulmi were 42, 31, 30 and 20 times greater than the susceptible strain, respectively. d. With Metasystox, resistance levels of the Taegu, Chunchun, Yesan and Suwon, strains of T urticae were respectively, 32,29,25 and 17 times as resistant as the susceptible strain. e. With C-8514, resistance levels of the Taegu, Chungju and Kyungsan strains of T. urticae showed respectively, 59, 29 and 19-fold resistance levels over the Osan strain. 2. Field trials were carried out to assess the toxicities of eleven alternative materials which would be used for control of O/P resistant strain of Panonychus ulmi. The acaricide groups represented were 2 Organo-chlorines (Kelthane MF and Prethylen), 1 carbamate (Furadan), 1 nitrophenyl (Morocide), 1 carbonate (Morestan), 1 tin(Plictran), 1 fluorine (Nissol), 2 mixtures (Fundal and Banmite) and Organo-phosphate (Phenkapton). Of all acaricides tested Kelthane, Plictran, Fundal and Morestan were the most effective; fol]owed by Banmite, Furadan, Prethylen and Nissol. Sumite and Morocide were intermediate, but Phenkapton(Organo-phosphate) was very poor. In other words, a first application of the above outstanding materials gave very high degrees of control of O/P resistant population of European red mite for about 7 to 12 days. However, the results indicate that secondary application would sometimes be necessary. There was no foliage damage to apple trees by any of the acaricides tested of the concentrations used.

  • Phosphorus desorption study is essential to understanding P behavior in agricultural and environmental soils because phosphorus is considered as two different aspects, a plant nutrient versus an environmental contaminant. This study was conducted to determine soil P buffering power related to P desorption quantity intensity (Q/I) parameters, $Q_{max}$(an index of P release capacity) and $l_0$(an index of the intensity factor), and to investigate the characteristics of relationship between the P desorption Q/I parameters and the soil properties. Soil samples were prepared with treatments of 0 and $100mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$ applied as $KH_2PO_4$ solution. The P desorption Q/I curves were obtained by a procedure using anion exchange resin beads and described by an empirical equation ($Q=aI^{-1}+bln(I+1)+c$). The P desorption Q/I curves for the high available P (${\g}20mg\;kg^{-1}$ of Olsen P) soils were characteristic concave trends with or without soil P enrichment, whereas for the low available P (${\lt}20mg\;kg^{-1}$ of Olsen P) soils, the anticipated Q/I concave curves could not be obtained without a proper amount of P addition. When the soils were enriched in phosphates, the values of desorbed solid phase labile P and solution P, such as $Q_{max}$ and $I_0$ respectively, were increased, but the ratio of $Q_{max}$ versus $I_0$ was decreased. Thus, the slope of desorption Q/I curve represented as phosphorus buffering power, $|BP_0|$, is decreased. The $|BP_0|$ values of the high available P soils ranged between 48 and $61L\;kg^{-1}$ in the P untreated samples and between 18 and $44L\;kg^{-1}$ in the P enriched samples. Overall $|BP_0|$ values of both low and high available P soils treated with $l00mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$ ranged between 14 and $79L\;kg^{-1}$. The $Q_{max}$, values ranged between 71.4 and $173.1mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$, and the lo values ranged between 0.98 and $3.82mg\;P\;L^{-1}$ in the P enriched soils. The $Q_{max}$ and $I_0$ values that control the P buffering power may be not specifically related to a specific soil property, but those values were complicatedly related to soil pH, clay content, soil organic matter content, and lime. Also, phosphorus release activity, however, markedly depended on the desorbability of the applied P as well as the native labile P.

  • Organic farming (OF) is regarded as alternative farming types against general farming system for sustainable agriculture, recently. However, there is little information on effects of OF on soil properties and watershed condition. In order to determine the effects of OF on soil properties, 36, 10 and 8 sites of organic farming (OF) fields of plastic film houses, paddy and orchard were selected in the national scale, respectively, to evaluate their chemical properties and phosphorus distributing characteristics. The average organic matter (OM) contents in organic farming fields were with $44g\;kg^{-1}$ in plastic film houses, $26g\;kg^{-1}$ in paddies and $39g\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soils higher than the average OM contents in conventional farming (CF) soils. Available phosphates were accumulated to 986 in plastic film house soils and $754mg\;kg^{-1}$ in orchard soils, respectively, over the optimum range. Furthermore, total P (T-P) reached to $2.973mg\;kg^{-1}$ in plastic film houses and $2303mg\;kg^{-1}$ in orchards in OF soils. It could be attained by applying repeatedly low N/P ratio of manure-based compost. In two types of soils inorganic P was dominant with the ratio of 62~80% of T-P, and then residual and organic Ps followed. However. residual-P was dominant in paddy soils with the rate of 50% of T-P. Fractionation of soil extractable P showed that Ca-P was dominant with about $1,330mg\;kg^{-1}$ in upland soils in OF fields, which is affected by high soil pH of over 6.0. However. Fe-P of extractable P was dominant in paddy soils. Water-soluble P was very high with 65 and $26mg\;kg^{-1}$ in plastic film house and orchard soils in OF. From this results. OF regarded as an environment-friendly farming system may cause serious soil deterioration by accumulated phosphorus and may also cause water pollution.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the functional effects of adding oyster shell powder on the quality properties and storage stability of emulsion-type pork sausages to substitute phosphates as a curing agent. Seven treatments were prepared: T1 (Control), T2 (0.3% STPP), T3 (1.5% NaCl), T4 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein), T5 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein + 0.15% oyster shell powder), T6 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein + 0.3% oyster shell powder), and T7 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein + 0.5% oyster shell powder). Significant differences were observed for ash in the proximal analysis. Adding 0.5% oyster shell powder significantly increased pH values when compared to the other treatments. Pork sausages with 0.3% oyster shell powder had significantly improved water holding capacity and cooking loss. Adding oyster shell powder (0.15, 0.3, and 0.5%) resulted in significantly higher hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, and chewiness values than those in the other treatments. No significant differences were observed among treatments during 14 d of cold storage at $4^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the purification capacity of pollutants by column test with the tidal flat sediment. Sediment materials were taken from Chunjangdae tidal flat which located in Chungnam Seochungun. The column tests were conducted on four conditions(R1 : raw sewage filtered by G2 filter, R2 : sterilized sewage after filtered by GF/C filter, R3 : R2 /filtered(membrane) seawater (1:1), R4 : R2 /filtered(membrane) seawater(1:2)). The results of this study may be summarized as followed ; The removed COD by column tests were increased according to increasing the quantity of sewage. During the column tests of 580min, the total removed ammonia nitrogen were 90.1mg for R1, 81.0mg for R2, 27.6mg for R3 and 4.1mg for R4. The result was similar to COD experiment. During the 580min, the total removed total-phosphates were 3.4mg for R1, 4.2mg for R2, 5.6mg for R3 and 2.0mg for R4. The removal efficiency of Pb and Cd for R3 and R4 reactor were higher than R1 and R2 reactor. The remove of heavy metal by the column test was high in sample with seawater. But in the initial 20min, the adsorbed Pb and Cd showed about 3% of the total adsorbed Pb and Cd during 580min.

  • In order to estimate the characteristics of the growth and composition of phytoplankton according to the available nutrients, we added nitrate (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, $100{\mu}M$) and phosphate (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, $10{\mu}M$) to field samples in a eutrophic site (St. 1) and an oligotrophic site (St. 22) in 2010 as well as a eutrophic site (St. 1, 5), a mesotrophic site (St. 19), and an oligotrophic site (St. 22) in 2011 at Jinhae Bay, Korea. The phytoplankton growth in the areas with additional nitrates and phosphates on St. 1 were significantly different from the control (One-way ANOVA:P<0.01). The dominant species at St. 1 in 2010 were Heterocapsa triquetra and Pseudo-nitzchia spp., to which nitrate and phosphate were added, respectively. The dominant species at St. 22 in 2010 differed between treatment conditions as follows: nitrate treatment Chaetoceros spp. (${\leq}10{\mu}M$), Thalassiosira spp. ($20{\mu}M$), and Pseudo-nitzchia spp.(${\geq}50{\mu}M$) for nitrate treatment; Cylindrotheca spp. ($2{\mu}M$) and Pseudo-nitzchia spp. ($5{\mu}M$) for phosphate treatment. Phytoplankton growth in 2011 according to the added nutrient were significantly different with treatment concentrations (One-way ANOVA: P<0.01). Moreover, the beginning of exponential growth in phytoplanktons was different between the eutro-mesotrophic sites (St. 1, 5, and 19) and the oligotrophic sites (St. 22) on day 2 and day 6 respectively. This implies that phytoplankton growth in the low nutrient condition may be retarded. The dominant species at St. 1 were Eucampia spp. and Chaetoceros spp. in the low nutrient treatment compared to Skeletonema spp., and Thalassiosira spp in the high nutrient treatment. The dominant species at St. 5 and St. 19 were mostly Skeletonema spp. and Chaetoceros spp. However, the dominant species at St. 22 was Thalassiosira spp.. The results of this study showed that phytoplankton growth and composition were different in areas with different nutrient characteristics resulting from the additional nutrients. Therefore, the nutrients additional algal assay could be indirectly explained why the biomass and composition of phytoplankton in Jinhae Bay has shown spatial differences.
