  • In this paper, we introduce the automatic speaker identification system 'SPO(Supreme Prosecutors Office) Verifier'. SPO Verifier is a GMM(Gaussian mixture model)-UBM(universal background model) based automatic speaker recognition system and has been developed using Korean speakers' utterances. This system uses a channel compensation algorithm to compensate recording device characteristics. The system can give the users the ability to manage reference models with utterances from various environments to get more accurate recognition results. To evaluate the performance of SPO Verifier on Korean speakers, we compared this system with one of the most widely used commercial systems in the forensic field. The results showed that SPO Verifier shows lower EER(equal error rate) than that of the commercial system.

  • K-SEC (Korean-Spoken English Corpus) is a kind of speech database that is being under construction by the authors of this paper This article discusses the needs of the K-SEC from various academic disciplines and industrial circles, and it introduces the characteristics of the K-SEC design, its catalogues and contents of the recorded database, exemplifying what are being considered from both Korean and English languages' phonetics and phonologies. The K-SEC can be marked as a beginning of a parallel speech corpus, and it is suggested that a similar corpus should be enlarged for the future advancements of the experimental phonetics and the speech information technology.

  • This study deals with the disguised voice (or voice disguise) in the field of forensic phonetics. We especially studied the effects of the methods of disguised voice on the aural decision. Within the nonelectronic-deliberate voice disguise area, the methods of disguised voice include use of lowered pitch, pinched nostrils, falsetto, and whisper. Ten (male:5, female:5) Seoul speakers made a recording of 16 sentences. In the aural test, 30 subjects listened normal and disguised voice. And they were asked to make a decision whether speakers identified or not. The result is as follows: The speaker verification of the falsetto and whisper was more difficult than the lowered pitch and pinched nostrils.

  • We explored Dutch listeners' perception of Korean three-way contrast of fortis, lenis, and aspirated stops. The three Korean stops are all voiceless word-initially, whereas Dutch distinguishes between voiced and voiceless stops, so Korean voiceless stops were expected to be difficult for the Dutch listeners. Among the three Korean stops, fortis stops are phonetically most similar to Dutch voiceless stops, thus they were expected to be the easiest to distinguish for the Dutch listeners. Dutch and Korean listeners carried out a discrimination task using three crucial comparisons, i.e., fortis-lenis, fortis-aspirated, and lenis-aspirated stops. Results showed that discrimination between lenis and aspirated stops was the most difficult among the three comparisons for both Dutch and Korean listeners. As expected, Dutch listeners discriminated fortis from the other stops relatively accurately. It seems likely that Dutch listeners relied heavily on VOT but less on F0 when discriminating between the three Korean stops.

  • The teaching of pronunciation is one of the areas in which linguistic phonetics can play an extremely useful role. This paper is concerned with the application of the results of my phonetic research to the actual teaching of Korean standard pronunciation with special reference to speech rhythm. It has been found that Korean words and utterances of various lengths are pronounced in standard Korean with one of the four main rhythmic patterns, each containing a strong stress. Unless we get the rhythmic patterns right in pronouncing Korean words and utterances, therefore, the resulting pronounciation is bound to sound dialectal or incorrect and in many instances even unintelligible to listeners. Hence the undeniable need to devise a useful technique to teach the Korean speech rhythm in a systematic way. In this paper each of the four main rhythmic patterns is presented and elaborated with sample examples taken from the living Korean. It is hoped that these examples of words and utterances can be used at the same time as useful pronunciation drill material not only for Koreans with dialectal background but also for foreign learners of Korean.
