  • The pyridinolysis of methyl phenyl phosphinic chloride is investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at -20.0 $^{\circ}C$. The Hammett and Br${\o}$nsted plots for substituent X variations in the nucleophiles are biphasic concave downwards with a break point at X = H, and unusual positive ${\rho}_X$ (= 2.94) and negative ${\beta}_X$ (= -0.48) values are obtained for the strongly basic nucleophiles. A stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting step change from bond breaking for the weakly basic pyridines to bond formation for the strongly basic pyridines is proposed on the basis of biphasic concave downward Hammett and Br${\o}$nsted plots. Unusual positive ${\rho}_X$ and negative ${\beta}_X$ values are rationalized by the isokinetic relationship. The pyridinolyses and anilinolyses of four $R_1R_2$P(=O)Cl-type substrates, dimethyl, diethyl, methyl phenyl, and diphenyl phosphinic chlorides in acetonitrile are compared to obtain systematic information on phosphoryl transfer reaction mechanism. The combination of the two ligands, Me and Ph, shows unexpected kinetic results for both the anilinolysis and pyridinolysis: greatest magnitude of $k_H/k_D$ (= 2.10) involving deuterated anilines $[XC_6H_4NH_2(D_2)]$ for the anilinolysis, and exceptionally fast rate and biphasic concave downward free energy correlation for the pyridinolysis.

  • This report shows the rates of solvolyses for phenyl methanesulfonyl chloride ($C_6H_5CH_2SO_2Cl$, I) in ethanol, methanol, and aqueous binary mixtures incorporating ethanol, methanol, acetone, 2,2,2-trifluroethanol (TFE) and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) are reported. Three representative solvents, studies were made at several temperatures and activation parameters were determined. The thirty kinds of solvents gave a reasonably precise extended Grunwald-Winstein plot, coefficient (R) of 0.954. The sensitivity values (l = 0.61 and m = 0.34, l/m = 1.8) of phenyl methanesulfonyl chloride (I) were smaller than those obtained for benzenesulfonyl chloride ($C_6H_5SO_2Cl$, II; l = 1.01 and m = 0.61) and 2-propanesulfonyl chloride ($(CH_3)_2CHSO_2Cl$, III; l = 1.28 and m = 0.64). As with the two previously studied solvolyses, an $S_N2$ pathway with somewhat ionization reaction is proposed for the solvolyses of I. The activation parameters, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$, were determined and they are also in line with values expected for a bimolecular reaction mechanism. The kinetic solvent isotope effect of 2.34 in $CH_3OH/CH_3OD$ is in accord with a bimolecular mechanism, probably assisted by general-base catalysis.

  • The specific rates of solvolysis of phenyl fluorothionoformate (PhOCSF, 1) have been determined in 22 pure and binary solvents at $10.0^{\circ}C$. The extended Grunwald-Winstein equation has been applied to the specific rates of solvolysis of 1 over the full range of solvents. The sensitivities (l = $1.32{\pm}0.13$ and m = $0.39{\pm}0.08$) toward the changes in solvent nucleophilicity and solvent ionizing power, and the $k_F/k_{Cl}$ values are similar to those previously observed for solvolyses of acyl haloformate esters, consistent with the addition step of an additionelimination pathway being rate-determining. The large negative values for the entropies of activation are consistent with the bimolecular nature of the proposed rate-determining step. The results are compared with those reported earlier for phenyl chloroformate and chlorothionoformate esters and mechanistic conclusions are drawn.

  • A series of 4-phenyl-1-(indoline-5-sulfonyl)-2-imidazolone derivatives has been synthesized starting from 2-bromoacetophenone. Reaction of 2-aminoacetophenone obtained from 2-bromoacetophenon by Delepin synthesis and potassium cyanate affords 1,3-dihydro-4-phenyl-2-imidazolone. This key intermediate was treated with sodium hydride and N-trifluoroacetyl-indoline-5-sulfonylchloride, and trifluoroacetyl group was deprotected to give 4-Phenyl-1-(indoline-5-sulfonyl)-2-imidazolone. Various substituents were introduced on the nitrogen of indoline. Antitumor activity of this series of compound was evaluated by MTT method. Nearly all of the compounds showed broad-spectrum activity.

  • The organic light-emitting diodes are fabricated with six anthracene derivatives containing simple substituents such as phenyl or naphthyl group. The device structure is as in the following: Indium tin oxide (ITO) (180 nm)/4,4-4,4',4"-tris[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]triphenylamine (2-TNATA) (30 nm)/4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl-1-amino] biphenyl (NPB) (20 nm)/Emitting compound (30 nm)/2,2',2"-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris (1-phenyl-1-H-benz-imidazole) TPBi (40 nm)/lithium quinolate (Liq) (2 nm)/Al (100 nm). In the emitting layer the anthracene derivatives are used without any dopant. All the six devices show blue emissions. Among the tested diodes, the one with 9-(2-naphthyl)-10-(p-tolyl) anthracene (2-NTA) exhibited luminous efficiency, power and external quantum efficiencies of 3.26 cd/A, 0.98 lm/A, 2.8 % at $20mA/cm^2$.

  • A series of novel fused-ring spiro compounds, spiro[benzo[ij]tetraphene-7,9'-fluorene] (SBTF) derivatives containing an end-capping aryl substituent at both the C3 and C10-positions hasbeen designed and synthesized via multi-step Suzuki coupling reactions. 3-(1-Naphthyl)-10-phenylSBTF (1N-PSBTF), 3-(2-naphthyl)-10-phenylSBTF (2N-PSBTF) and 3-[4-(1-naphthyl)phenyl]-10-phenylSBTF (NP-PSBTF) showed improved glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) with good thermal stability. Their photophysical, electrochemical, and electroluminescent properties were investigated and were used to construct blue organic light emission diodes (OLEDs). The typical OLED devices showed excellent performance; the NP-PSBTF-based device exhibited highly efficient deep blue-light emission with a maximum efficiency of 5.27 cd/A (EQE, 4.63%) with CIE (x = 0.133, y = 0.144). According to these characteristics, these deep-blue light emitting materials have sufficient potential for fluorescent OLED applications.

  • A novel potential linking ligand (4-nitro-benzylidene)-(3-nitro-phenyl)-amine (1) was prepared from 4-nitrobenzaldehyde and 3-nitroaniline by the Schiff-base condensation. From the reaction between 1 and dichlorobis(benzonitrile)palladium (II) $(PdCl_2(NCPh)_2)$, an unexpected product $trans-PdCl_2(NO_2-C_6H_4-NH_2)_2$ (2) was isolated. Compounds 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In compound 2, the $NH_2$ hydrogen atoms in the 3-nitroaniline ligand participate in intermolecular N-H${\cdot}\;{\cdot}\;{\cdot}\;$Cl hydrogen bonds.

  • The correlation of the infrared carbonyl stretching frequency with substituents in benzanilides has been studied. The Hammett-type equation(1) was adopted for this correlation. Substituents in a C-phenyl-ring gave a better correlation with ${\sigma}^{+}$rather than ${\sigma}$, meanwhile, substituents in a N-phenyl-ring gave a better correlation with ${\sigma}$. When substituents are placed on both C-phenyl and N-phenyl ring, they influenced the carbonyl stretching frequency reasonably independently of each other. A conformation of benzanilide which accounts for the above observation has also been discussed.

  • Extended Huckel Molecular Orbital (EHMO) calculations of haloallene (1-halo-3-phenyl-1,2-propadiene) derivatives have been performed. From the MO calculation data and kinetic experimental results, the mechanism for the hydrolysis of haloallenes is proposed.; Below pH 8.0, the hydrolysis proceeds through a solvent assisted $S_N1$ mechanism involving the formation of carbonium ion Ⅱ as intermediate. However above pH 9.5, the hydrolysis proceeds through an $S_N2'$ mechanism via transition state Ⅲ.
