In the paper, mild solvent soluble alkyl group modified epoxy resins were prepared via a three-step method; (1) the condensation reaction of dodecyl phenol (DP) and formaldehyde, (2) the crosslinking reaction of dodecyl phnol novolac compound (DPC) and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, (3) the dodecyl phenol novolac epoxy resins containing fatty acid (DPFA) was prepared by introducing fatty acid to DPC. Equivalent ratios of DP and formaldehyde were 1.25~1.333/1.0. Equivalent ratio of DPC and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (YD-128) was 1.0/2.0. Reactivity, viscosity, molecular weight, solvent solubility, and physical properties of DPFA were investigated. The result show that as the number of aromatic ring of DPFA increased, viscosity increased and solvent solubility improved. When we test the properties of coatings by blending the synthesized DPFA with a white pigment, DPFAC-5 using triphenylphosphine (TPP) as a ring-open catalyst showed optical performance for drying time, adhesion, hardness, impact resistance, acid resistance and storage stability.
Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate oxidation system using ozone and hydrogen peroxide for treating water contaminated with phenol. We were able to greatly improve the oxidation efficiency of the aqueous phenol using hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Two methods were compared and analyzed in this study. In the consequence through the methods, we concluded that the $O_3/UV$ is superior to the hydrogen the results. The decomposition efficiency of aqueous phenol by $H_2O_2$. was exceeded at 83.3% in the concentration of phenol, 5, 15, 25 ppm, respectively. The rate of decomposition reaction by $H_2O_2$. was very slow. In the occasion of the fractional life, it was determined the value that $1.61{\times}10^{-5}(l/mol)^{1.172}sec^{-1}$, $3.75{\times}10^{-5}(l/mol)^{0.792}sec^{-1}$, $4.11{\times}10^{-5}(l/mol)^{1.782}sec^{-1}$. The rate of decomposition reaction of aqueous phenol by $O_3$ was fast compared to the $H_2O_2$. We concluded that the $O_3$ method is useful with the consideration of the reaction time 30 minutes. In the occasion of the fractional life, it was determined the value that $1.094{\times}10^{-4}(l/mol)^{0.933}sec^{-1}$, $2.1{\times}10^{-4}(l/mol)^{0.842}sec^{-1}$, $7.22{\times}10^{-4}(l/mol)^{1.332}sec^{-1}$.
The interaction of p-halogenated phenol derivatives with the micellar system of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. Effects of substituents, additives, and temperatures on the solubilization of phenol derivatives have been measured. The results show that all the values of ${\Delta}G^o$ and ${\Delta}H^o$ were negative and the values of ${\Delta}S^o$ were positive for all phenol derivatives within the measured temperature range. The calculated thermodynamic parameters depended on the size, the electro-negativity, and the hydrophobic property of halogen substituents. The addition of n-butanol results in the decrement in tthe Ks values and the addition of NaCl caused the increment in the Ks values for all the phenol derivatives. From these changes we can postulate that the solubilization sites of the phenol derivatives in the micelle depend severely on properties of the halogen-substituent.

Food delivery is gaining popularity due to changes in lifestyle and dietary patterns. However, packages used to delivery food may contain contaminants including heavy metals, or additives added during manufacturing process which may migrate into food during processing and transportation. In this study, a total of 58 food packages for delivery were collected and tested for migration of heavy metals (lead, cadmium and arsenic), bisphenol A and phenol into food simulants. The method was validated by evaluating linearity of calibration curve, limit of detection, limit of quantification, recovery and precision. Result of heavy metal migration showed that lead was the most frequently migrated metal and the highest concentration was detected in a polypropylene sample. Although there are no specific migration limits for bisphenol A and phenol in packaging materials tested in this study, migrations of bisphenol A and phenol were detected in some packages. This may due to contamination or additives added during manufacture of packages. Risk (%) was calculated to analyze the risk associated with the migration of heavy metals, bisphenol A and phenol, and was always below 1 %. These results showed that food packages for delivery are safe in terms of heavy metals, bisphenol A and phenol migration.
The feasibility of fly ash was evaluated as an alternative liner material to the conventional clay liner of landfills through modeling and laboratory experiments. In order to consider the effect of unsaturation on water flow through the liner, analyses were made to compare flow characteristics in saturated liner with that of unsaturated one. Contaminant migration characteristics in liners were investigated by batch experiment and modeling, in which phenol was employed as a model was solved by numerical techniques of finite difference method and predictor-corrector method to deal with high non-linearity. Sequential method was used to handle the system of differential equations. Results show that the alternative liner material is more capable of cutting off water flow in unsaturated condition and in preventing phenol from passing through it. It can be seen that, under the flow conditions considered in this study, the conventional saturation approach underestimates the amount of water passing through the liner and doers the cut-off capability against phenol significantly.
Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) was a major pathogen of watermelon and had affected seriously to watermelon production in Korea. Rapid and sensitive detection method of CGMMV associated with bottle gourd (Lagenafia siceraria) seeds was developed by using RT-PCR in this study. A pair of primeri Wmfl and Wmrl, specific for CGMMV was designed from coat protein gene sequences of CGMMV-W and used for amplifying 420 bp product in RT-PCR. To simplify the virus extraction procedure and reduce an inhibitor from the extract for the RT-PCR, some methods using ethanol precipitation, double filtration, polyethylene glycol precipitation and phenol/chloroform/isoamyl alcohol extraction procedure were compared and the phenol/chloroform/isoamyl alcohol extraction procedure was selected by its enhanced sensitivity. This detection method using the selected extraction step and the primers for RT-PCR could reliably detect an infected level of one CGMMV-infested seed in 1,000 seeds. This rapid and sensitive RT-PCR assay provides auseful tool for the specific detection of CGMMV in bottle gourd seed samples containing high levels of back-ground inhibitors.
To find out the temporal and spatial variations in contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral, the sap of Acer mono MAX. were harvested from several regions and periods, and those contents were determined by solvent fractionation, TLC, HPLC and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Most of all the free sugar contained in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was sucrose, with range of 1.35 to 3.41%. The content of total phenolic compound in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was distributed from 0.034 to 0.151 mg/100m1, and most of phenolic acid was phloroglucinol. The contents of Na, K, Ca and Mg were ranged from 24.11 to 33.15, from 13.75 to 22.10, from 47.19 to 88.00 and from 2.48 to 6.31 ppm, respectively. Contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral decreased sharply at the later harvest. Comparing two different methods of the sap harvest, bore method and groove method, the contents of compounds in the study were determined higher with groove method.
Properties and glue shear strength of each water soluble rues-phenol copolymer adhesive and phenolic resin adhesive were examined as a high temperature curing binder through the manufacture of plywood made of Kapur veneer. The former has different molar ratio and the latter was made from different catalyst method. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Specific gravities of air dried plywood manufactured from each adhesive ranged from 0.67 to 0.82 and their moisture contents met the K.S. standard 2) In dry and wet shear strength, adhesives with 60 percent of non volatile content showed higher values than those with 50 percent except phenolic resin. Urea-phenol copolymer resin with 20 percent of phenol content exhibited the highest, and that with 70 percent the lowest. Filling effect of wood flour on the bonding strength is great in urea-phenol copolymer resin with more than 50 percent of phenol content, especially significant in 50 percent of non volatile content including alkali catalyst phenolic resin. Alkali and acid catalyst methods were the highest among the adhesive manufacture methods. In wet strength, urea resin belongs to the lowest group. 3) In glue shear strength after boiling and drying test, no method for manufacturing phenolic formaldehyde resin adhesive was stronger than alkali and acid catalyst methods. Phenolic resin made from alkali catalyst method needs a wood flour filler to improve the bonding quality. Urea-phenol copolymer resin with 10 percent of phenol content showed the reasonable water resistance.
Aromatic compounds are of major concern among environmental pollutants due to their toxicity and persistence. To monitor aromatic compounds in a real time with a better sensitivity, a new method of SPR (surface plasmon resonance) based on DNA chip (Biacore 3000) was developed here. It is thought that CapR regulatory protein as a complex with phenol, could bind to their corresponding promoter, Po. Biotinylated DNA oligomers for the promoter was synthesized by PCR and coupled onto streptoavidin-linked CM5-chip. CapR regulatory proteins were purified after cloning their genes in pET21a (+) vector and expressing proteins. The interaction was assessed by the system where the regulatory proteins flowed with or without phenol through the cells of DNA chip. CapR regulatory protein even in the presence of phenol had no response to its promoter, Po, suggesting that other factor(s) might be required for the activation of Po promoter. The present work reveals a promising possibility of the SPR-based DNA chip in monitoring specific environmental pollutants in a real time.
Objective of this research was to investigate the volatile aroma compounds and phenol contents for preservative effects. Aerial part of 5 Korean natured species of thyme located in Jeju alpine, jeju middle mountain, Kyeonggido, Ulleung island, and Gangwondo was analyzed by thermal desorption gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (TD-GC-MSD) method. Jeju middle mountain thyme was relatively high 62 species and has been investigated a high concentration of $7365.22{\mu}g/m^3$ contents according to the quantitative analysis. Total phenol contents containing thymol and carvacrol of Jeju middle mountain thyme were relatively high and showed 35.92%.
