This study was carried out to develop an efficient process far the elimination of phenol pollutant from soils. An microwave-assisted process (MAP) and a conventional Soxhlet extraction method (SEM) were employed to extract phenol from two types of soils. The effects of extraction methods, aged time of the spiked soil samples, extraction solvent and extraction time on the extraction performance were compared. Our results demonstrate that the recoveries from standard soil spiked were at least 10% higher fer MAP than these f3r the conventional Soxhlet. The extraction time by MAP requires significantly shelter time (1 min) than 15 h of the conventional Soxhlet. The recoveries from non-contaminated soil spiked with phenol were also almost identical f3r above results. The reduction of the extraction times with efficiency higher than that afforded by the conventional Soxhlet technique supports the suitability of the MAP method.
Photocatalytic degradation of phenol was carried out with UV-illuminated TiO$_2$-SiO$_2$ in aqueous suspension. TiO$_2$-SiO$_2$ catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method from the titanium isopropoxide and tetraethylorthosilicate at different Ti/Si ratio and some commercial TiO$_2$ catalysts were used as purchased. All catalysts were characterized by X-ray Diffraction(XRD) and BET surface area analyzer. The effect of reaction conditions, such as initial concentration of phenol, reaction temperature and catalyst weight on the photocatalytic activity was studied. In addition, TiO$_2$-SiO$_2$(49: 1) prepared by sol-gel method showed higher activity than commercial TiO$_2$catalysts on the photocatalytic degradation of phenol. The addition of SiO$_2$ into TiO$_2$hepled to increase the thermal stability of titania which suppressed the formation of anatase into rutile. The photocatalytic degradation of phenol showed pseudo-1st order reaction and the degradation rate increases with decreasing initial phenol concentration.
The human genomic deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) was extracted from the pulp, dentin of 22 teeth by clelex, phenol methods. Samples of the tooth-derived DNA were amplified by polymerase chain reaction(PCR), electrophosed for sex determination by detection of X-Y homologus amelogenin gene and D1S80 locus detection The following results have been achieved. 1. Chelex and phenol method are effective to sex determination in the pulp and dentin 2. Chelex method is not suitable for detection of D1S80 locus. 3. Concentration and purity of DNA for teeth using chelex method is lower than using phenol method. From the above investigation, chelex method is simple, rapid for sex determination, but it is not suitable for detection of VNTRs.
Human genomic Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) was extracted from teeth by boiling, salting-out, phenol, boiling-phenol methods. The author compared DNA concentration and its purity, the accuracy of sex determination and the results of the D1S80 locus detection among above 4 methods. The following results were obtained : 1. DNA concentration was the highest in pulp with salting-out method and DNA purity was higher in pulp with salting-out and phenol methods than other 2 methods. 2. Sex determination was possible using of the pulp and the dentin of the teeth with four methods but, it was impossible in the enamel and some pulp with boiling method. 3. Amplification of D1S80 locus occurred from pulp and dentin with salting-out, phenol, and boiling-phenol methods. 4. There are no differences among the amplification of X-Y homologus amelogenin gene by application of 4 methods and salting-out, phenol methods efficiently makes available to amplification of D1S80 locus. From the investigation DNA extraction, sex determination, amplification of D1S80 locus was successfully accomplished with salting-out, phenol, boiling-phenol methods Therefore above 3 methods are available and applicable as forensic odontology for individual identification.
This experiment was executed to investigate the effect of activation of veneer surface by oxidizing agents, hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid, on bonding characteristics of Malas(Homalium foetidum Benth) plywood, in which the effects of these oxidizing agents amount, pretreatment time, and pressing time and temperatue on shear strength of the plywood were examined and discussed. In this research the activation of veneer surface by oxidants was effective in raising shear strength but the difference in shear strength was not observed between hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid treatment. Hydrogen peroxide treatment, however, seemed to be more profitable to industrial application because of its lower concentration and easier handling than nitric acid. The bonding method by lignin-phenol adhesive through surface activation revealed inferior shear strength to phenol- and urea-formaldehyde adhesive but superior water resistance to urea-formaldehyde adhesive and this bonding method, in addition, have the advantage of lower cost compared with phenol-formaldehyde adhesive, Therefore, this bonding method by lignin-phenol adhesive through surface activation seemed to economical in manufacturing of water-resistant wood panel materials in future.
Electrochemical degradation of phenol was evaluated at DSA (dimensionally stable anode), JP202 (Ru, 25%; Ir, 25%; other, 50%) electrode for being a treatment method in non-biodegradable organic compounds such as phenol. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of applied current (1.0~4.0 A), electrolyte type (NaCl, KCl, $Na_2SO_4$, $H_2SO_4$) and concentration (0.5~3.0 g/L), initial phenol concentration (12.5~100.0 mg/L) on phenol degradation and $UV_{254}$ absorbance as indirect indicator of by-product degraded phenol. It was found that phenol concentration decreased from around 50 mg/L to zero after 10 min of electrolysis with 2.5 g/L NaCl as supporting electrolyte at the current of 3.5 A. Although phenol could be completely electrochemical degraded by JP202 anode, the degradation of phenol COD was required oxidation time over 60 min due to the generation of by-products. $UV_{254}$ absorbance can see the impact of as an indirect indicator of the creation and destruction of by-product. The initial removal rate of phenol is 5.63 times faster than the initial COD removal rate.
The present study demonstrated the development and validation of the method for the quantification of phenol in food using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). After spiking of internal standard (Phenol-$d_5$) to food, those samples were extracted with organic solvent mixture (acetone : dichloromethane = 1 : 1, v/v) using ultra sonic extractor and cleaned by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) technique. The amount of phenol was determined by GC/MS. To validate the developed method, we evaluated parameters were the selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and recovery. To demonstrate the selectivity of the method, blank samples of rice, corn, and fish(mackerel) were prepared and subjected to GC-MS analysis. To verify the linearity of the method, six different standard concentrations of phenol at 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2.5 mg/kg were evaluated. The correlation coefficient ($r^2$) of calibration curve was 0.9999. The recovery rate for phenol standard calculated by internal standard method were 82.2~101.5% for samples fortified with 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 mg/kg, respectively. Also the repeatability and reproducibility for validation of precision were 0.2~5.5%. According to the result of the validation, this established method was suitable for AOAC guideline. The limit of detection (LOD) for phenol analysis were 0.03~0.1 mg/kg, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.1~0.3 mg/kg. Therefore, we established the optimal analysis method for determination of phenol in food using GPC and GC/MS.
Carbolic Acid which is called phenol is one of the important starting and/or intermediate materials in various industrial processes. However, its excessive release into environment poses a threat to living organisms, as it is a highly carcinogens and hazardous pollutant even at the very low concentration. Thus removal of phenol from polluted environments is very crucial for sustainable remediation process. We developed a low cost adsorption method for separating phenol from a model aqueous solution. The phenol adsorption was studied using two adsorbents i.e., Amber lite XAD-16 and Amber lite XAD-7 HP with a constant amount of resin 0.1 g at varying aqueous phenol concentrations ($50-200mgL^{-1}$) at room temperature. We compared the efficacy of two phenol adsorbents for removing higher phenol concentrations from the media. We investigated equilibrium and kinetics studies of phenol adsorption employing Freundlich, Temkin and Langmuir isotherms. Amberlite XAD-16 performed better than Amberlite XAD-7 HP in terms of phenol removal efficiency that amounted to 95.52%. Pseudo second order model was highly fitted for both of the adsorption systems. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) with Langmuir isotherm was found to be 0.98 for Amberlite XAD-7 HP. However, Freundlich isotherm showed $R^2$ value of 0.95 for Amberlite XAD-16, indicating that both isotherms could be described for the isotherms on XAD-7 HP and Amberlite XAD-16, respectively.
Phenol, often discharged from petroleum and fine chemical industries is potential carcinogen and was classified into priority pollutant by EPA in USA. It causes serious environmental and health problem if discharged to the environment such as soil or aquifer. The removal efficiency of phenol and COD using Fenton treatment(Hydrogen Peroxide and Ferrous Sulfate) was observed and biodegradability (BOD$_{5}$/COD$_{cr}$) of reaction products were also examined. When 50 mg/l of phenol was treated by Fenton's Reagent(50 mg/l of hydrogen peroxide and 900 mg/l of ferrous sulfate), the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was 100% and 80% respectively in 10 minutes, which suggested this method can be used as actual phenol removal process. The initial biodegradability of 500 mg/l phenol solution was 0.7 but decreased as hydrogen peroxide was increased.
The crystal and molecular structure of 2-methyl-3-(N-trimethyl ammonium)phenol iodide, $C_{10}H_{16}NOI, was determined by X-ray diffraction method. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group $P_{na2}_{1}$ with a=13.327(3), b=12.496(3), C=7.227(2)A and Z=4. A total of 489 independent observed reflections were collected by the automated Four-circle diffractometer and was solved by heavy atom method and refined by anisotropic block-diagonal least-squares method to the R value of 0.04. The benzene ring is slightly distorted from regular hexagon. The I atom and 2-methyl-3-(N-trimethyl ammonium)phenol group is held together by van der Waals forces in the crystal. Intermolecular hydrogen bond is of the type O-H....I with the length 3.35.angs.. Apart from the hydrogen bonding system the molecules are held together by van der Waals forces in the crystal.
