Despites many attempts to explore the microbial diversity in kimchi fermentation, the predominant flora remains controversial to date. In the present study, major lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were investigated in Chinese cabbage kimchi in the early phase of fermention. For the samples over pH 4.0, viable cell counts of Leuconostoc and Pediococcus were $10^6\;cfu/ml$ and below $10^2\;cfu/ml$, respectively, and 20 isolates out of 172 were subjected to a biochemical identification (API 50 CH kit) as well as molecular-typing methods including ITSPCR with a RsaI digestion and 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis for species confirmation. Seven isolates were nicely assigned to Lb. brevis, 6 to Leuconostoc spp. (2 mesenteroides, 2 citreum, I carnosum, I gasicomitatum), 4 to Weissella (3 kimchii/cibaria, 1 hanii) and 2 to other Lactobacillus spp. (1 farciminis, 1 plantarum). On the other hand, the biochemical identification data revealed 9 strains of Lb. brevis, 6 strains of Leuconostocs,2 strains of Lb. plantarum and 1 strain each of Lb. coprophilus and Lactococcus lactis. However, a single isolates, YSM 16, was not matched to the ITS-PCR database constructed in the present study. Two Lb. brevis strains by API 50 CH kit were reassigned to W kimchii/cibaria, Lb. coprophilus or W hanii, respectively, judging from the results by the above molecular typing approaches. As a whole, the identification data obtained by the biochemical test were different from those of ITS-PCR molecular method by about $63\%$ at genus-level and $42\%$ at species-level. The data by the ITS-PCR method conclusively suggest that predominant LAB species is probably heterolactic Lb. brevis, followed by W kimchii/cibaria, Leuc. mesenteroides, and Leuc. citreum, in contrast to the previous reports [3] that Leuc. mesenteroides is the only a predominant species in the early phase kimchi fermentation.
Most of the exogenous and endogenous chemical compounds are metabolized by enzymes of xenobiotic processing pathways, including the phase I cytochrome p450 species. Carcinogens and their metabolites are generally detoxified by phase II enzymes like glutathione-S-transferases (GST). The balance of enzymes determines whether metabolic activation of pro-carcinogens or inactivation of carcinogens occurs. Under certain conditions, deregulated expression of xenobiotic enzymes may also convert endogenous substrates to metabolites that can facilitate DNA adduct formation and ultimately lead to cancer development. In this study, we aimed to test the association between deregulation of metabolizing genes and brain tumorigenesis. The expression profile of metabolizing genes CYP1A1 and GSTP1 was therefore studied in a cohort of 36 brain tumor patients and controls using Western blotting. In a second part of the study we analyzed protein expression of GSTs in the same study cohort by ELISA. CYP1A1 expression was found to be significantly high (p<0.001) in brain tumor as compared to the normal tissues, with ~4 fold (OR=4, 95%CI=0.43-37) increase in some cases. In contrast, the expression of GSTP1 was found to be significantly low in brain tumor tissues as compared to the controls (p<0.02). This down regulation was significantly higher (OR=0.05, 95%CI=0.006-0.51; p<0.007) in certain grades of lesions. Furthermore, GSTs levels were significantly down-regulated (p<0.014) in brain tumor patients compared to controls. Statistically significant decrease in GST levels was observed in the more advanced lesions (III-IV, p<0.005) as compared to the early tissue grades (I-II). Thus, altered expression of these xenobiotic metabolizing genes may be involved in brain tumor development in Pakistani population. Investigation of expression of these genes may provide information not only for the prediction of individual cancer risk but also for the prevention of cancer.
Engineers must be aware of possible sources of chaotic behavior. They may render conventional design predictions untrustworthy and potentially unsafe because of the sensitivity to initial conditions. Dynamic responses of a spherical shell subjected to impulsive loading which act on the center are analyzed using the finite element method. The chaotic responses are identified by the standard methods, such as displacement-time histories, Poincare maps, and phase diagrams. The responses are chaotic, but, not so sensitive to the initial conditions, and the characteristics of responses are not changed with time, in contrast to the case of the responses of beam. The Poincare points scattered in the limited area represent that the responses are chaotic, but do not show the geometric structures. The snap-through phenomena of the shell to the side of the direction of the load or of the opposite direction, is analysed by using the energy diagram.

In the conventional public switched telephone network(PSTN), there are various types of modulation that can be used in ADSL to offer fast data communication, two of which are CAP(Carrierless Amplitude Phase) and DMT(Discrete MultiTone). As we consider the current situation, DMT is getting more predominant in the market than CAP. One of the reasons is that it gives high performance in spite of its high complexity Since DMT divides the full range of bandwidth into 256 sub-channels, it can be highly adaptive in the circumstances, where the problems of attenuation and noise caused by the propagation distance are very crucial. In this paper, a new bit loading algorithm for DMT modulation is proposed. The proposed algorithm can be efficiently implemented in a way that it requires less computation than the conventional modulation techniques. In contrast to the conventional algorithms which perform sorting processing, the proposed algorithm uses look-up tables to reduce the repetition of calculation. Consequently, it is shown that less processing time and lower complexity can be achieved.

Purpose: To develop a novel combination of controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration (CAIPIRINHA) with integrated SSFP (CAIPI-iSSFP) for accelerated SSFP imaging without banding artifacts at 3T. Materials and Methods: CAIPI-iSSFP was developed by adding a dephasing gradient to the balanced SSFP (bSSFP) pulse sequence with a gradient area that results in $2{\pi}$ dephasing across a single pixel. Extended phase graph (EPG) simulations were performed to show the signal behaviors of iSSFP, bSSFP, and RF-spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) sequences. In vivo experiments were performed for brain and abdominal imaging at 3T with simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) acceleration factors of 2, 3 and 4 with CAIPI-iSSFP and CAIPI-bSSFP. The image quality was evaluated by measuring the relative contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and by qualitatively assessing banding artifact removal in the brain. Results: Banding artifacts were removed using CAIPI-iSSFP compared to CAIPI-bSSFP up to an SMS factor of 4 and 3 on brain and liver imaging, respectively. The relative CNRs between gray and white matter were on average 18% lower in CAIPI-iSSFP compared to that of CAIPI-bSSFP. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that CAIPI-iSSFP provides up to a factor of four acceleration, while minimizing the banding artifacts with up to a 20% decrease in the relative CNR.
The normal state of high-Tc superconducting materials has been believed to contain important clues to finding the correct mechanism of the high-Tc superconductivity. One example is the existence of pseudogap in the normal state even above Tc, as observed in various measurements such as photoemission spectroscopy and tunneling conductance. In this pseudogap regime the existence of preformed pairs only with local phase coherence has been debated. Recently Choi, Bang, and Campbell[1] have proposed the occurrence of the zero-bias conductance enhancement due to Andreev quasiparticle reflection from the preformed pairs even with the local phase coherence. In this study we examine the zero-bias enhancement of the differential conductance near or slightly above Tc, using c-axis tunneling in mesa structure of Bi2Sr20a0u208+d single crystals. In slightly overdoped samples zero-bias conductance enhancement (ZBCE) has been observed over a range of 2 K above Tc. In contrast, in underdoped samples with Tc${\sim}$72K the ZBCE appears over a range of 5-6 K above Tc, a much wider temperature range than in overdoped samples. This result may pose as positive signs of the existence of prefurmed pairs in the normal state of high- Tc superconducting materials.

To understand the effect of aerosols on the growth and physiological conditions of trees in forests, it is important to know the state of aerosols that are deposited on the surface of the leaves or needles. In this study, we developed methods of visualization of submicron-sized aerosols that were artificially deposited from the gas-phase or liquid phase onto tree leaves or needles in trees. Firstly, we used field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) to observe black carbon (BC) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves or needles. The distribution of BC particles deposited on the leaves and needles were distinguished based on the size and morphological features of the particles. The distribution and agglomerates size of BC particles differed between two spraying methods of BC particles employed. Secondly, we tried to visualize gold (Au) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) coupled to FE-SEM. We detected the Au particles based on the characteristic X-ray spectrum, which was secondarily generated from the Au particles. In contrast to the case of BC particles, the Au particles did not form agglomerates and were uniformly distributed on the leaf surfaces. The present results show that our methods provide useful information of adsorption and/or behavior of fine particles at the submicron level on the surface of the leaves.
Purpose: This study investigated Korean women in between age 30 to 60 who were obese or overweight in order to explore their self-perception based on lifetime phase. Methods: Focus group interviews were performed four times with six to eight participants in each group (a total of 27). Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: The data analysis from the interviews revealed recurring common themes: heavy heart, heavy body, resigned acceptance of their own condition, and compromise. The study also found that each age group had different concerns: concerning others' gaze on their obese appearances (30s), realizing their aging obese appearances (40s), recognizing red flags of their health with obesity (50s), and becoming ambivalent about their obese appearances (60s). Overall, their perceptions of being overweight were negative and stressful. Women in their 30s and 40s were more interested in their appearances, and thus were more obsessive about weight gain. In contrast, women in their 50s and 60s were more accepting of their physical appearances, and thus were more concerned about living healthy than losing weight. Conclusion: These results may be useful to consider when developing tailored weight-control programs for obese and overweight Korean women. Additionally, strategic approaches for successful and effective programs targeting healthy weight should be based on better understanding about women's self-perceptions and motivations.
Texture development and martensitic phase transformation, on rolling, are compared in two Hadfield's steels, one having low carbon content(0.65wt% C), the other high carbon content(1.35wt%). In spite of small difference in stacking fault energy(about 2 mJm$^{-2}$ ) between two Hadfield's steels, the differences in texture development are observed. In low carbon steel, the textures developed are similar to those of low stacking fault energy metals in low strain range. However, the abnormal textures such as {111} , {110} <001> are strongly developed at high strain, which are due to the disturbance of u martensite in the development of textures formed at the packets of shear bands or at the grain boundaries. In contrast to low carbon Hadfield's steel( LCHS), the texture development of high carbon Hadfield's steel(HCHS) is simitar to those of low stacking fault energy metals in the whole strain range. This may be due to the fact that the amount of deformation induced martensite was small, as observed by A.C. magnetic susceptibility and iron particle tests.

In contrast with STT missiles, the guidance law design for BTT missiles should be based on 3-dimensional pursuit kinematics, since the pitch and roll channels of BTT missiles are coupled dynamically. More generally than the prior works, the dynamics of pitch and roll channels, as well as 3-dimensional pursuit kinematics are considered in the design of our terminal-phase optimal guidance law for BTT missiles proposed in this paper. Thereby, the proposed optimal guidance law guarantees high capturability with small miss distance without significant performance degradation due to time-lag effect even in case of relatively slow autopilot dynamics. Moreover, the resulting optimal guidance law is expressed explicitly in feedback-form with the coefficients given as the functions of time-to-go. The effectiveness and practicality of our work is demonstrated through various simulation results.
