  • In small-power applications, variable-speed motors having high efficiency and controllability become more dominant than brushed DC motors. BLDC motors with permanent magnets in the rotor and SRMs directed by reluctance torque due to no permanent magnets have been strongly studied as a candidate. Compared to the BLDC motors, SRMs are more suitable for low-cost applications since the magnetic structure is simple, mechanically robust, and cheap due to no additional excitation in the rotor such as copper wire, aluminum, and permanent magnets. In addition, relatively small number of phases in single and two-phase SRMs allows more cost savings with regards to material in the motor and switching devices in the converter. In this paper, several 2 phase SRMs are compared to a 3 phase 6/4 SRM in terms of flux distribution in key parts of the motors.

  • This paper presents a performance analysis in steady-state of a novel type Auxiliary Resonant Commutation Snubber-linked 3-level 3-phase voltage source soft switching inverter suitable and acceptable for high-power applications in comparison with other three types of 3-level 3-phase voltage source soft switching inverters. This soft switching inverter operation which can operate under a condition of Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). The practical steady -state performances of this inverter are illustrated and evaluated on the basis of the experimental results.

  • For complex channel blind equalization, this study presents the performance and characteristics of two complex blind information theoretic learning algorithms (ITL) which are based on minimization of Euclidian distance (ED) between probability density functions compared to constant modulus algorithm which is based on mean squared error (MSE) criterion. The complex-valued ED algorithm employing constant modulus error and the complex-valued ED algorithm using a self-generated symbol set are analyzed to have the fact that the cost function of the latter forces the output signal to have correct symbol values and compensate amplitude and phase distortion simultaneously without any phase compensation process. Simulation results through MSE convergence and constellation comparison for severely distorted complex channels show significantly enhanced performance of symbol-point concentration with no phase rotation.

  • Extraction method of ginseng saponin by Extrelut column was studied as compared with that by phase separation. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Extraction time consumed by Extrelut column was 2 ~ 3 hours and much shorter as compared with that by phase separation. 2. Recovery rates Of ginsenoside by Extrelut column method were 97.8 ~ 106.1% and much higher as compared with those by phase separation method.

  • Passive noise reduction is a classical approach to attenuate industrial noise. But Active noise cancellation has several advantages over the passive noise cancellation. Such a system offers a better low frequency performance with a smaller and lighter system. This paper presents an active closed loop control system which consists of an controller for inverting and compensating the phase delay, an microphone for picking up the external noise, and loudspeaker for radiating the acoustic anti-phase signal to reduce external noise. The noise in the phase delay covered from 80$^{\circ}$ to 270$^{\circ}$ tends to be reduced. The degree of noise cancellation obtainable with this system reaches value about 17㏈.

  • A single phase to three phase power converter with cost effective and simple structure is proposed. The converter consists of rectifier and inverter. The rectifier is composed of a half wave rectifier, a dc link capacitor, and a current limiting inductor, and the inverter is of only two switches with PWM control. For negative sequence operation the inverter output voltage leads the line input by $60^{\circ}$, and for positive sequence operation the inverter output voltage leads by $60^{\circ}$. We can see that positive sequence operation shows higher output voltage, slight harmonic distortion(2%), and better performances such as high efficiency and high power factor. A mathematical model for system analysis is provided, and specifications for selection and control scheme both for start-up and for steady state are analyzed. comparison and operational limits of positive and negative sequence operation are performed, and simulations and experiments are executed to verify the proposed.

  • Material damping is an important parameter to evaluate the site response by a dynamic loading. Currently the material damping of the subgrade is mainly determined by a resonant column testing. Typical methods to evaluate material damping include half-power bandwidth method and free-vibration decay method. In the large strain range, the half-power bandwidth method gives an erratic damping factor, because the method is based on the assumption of the linear behavior of a specimen. The free-vibration decay method has also limitations in that the damping factors vary with the range of cycles in calculation, and also in that the specific shear strain can not be designated for the free vibration. In this study, the frequency-phase method, which was developed to evaluate material damping of a beam simply supported, is introduced to evaluate the material damping by the resonant column testing. Also, the comparison among half-power method, free-vibration decay method and the frequency-phase method is provided for a remolded sand.

  • A compressible two-fluid two-phase flow computation model using the stiffened-gas equation of state is formulated. Since the conservation equation system is of mixed type, it gives complex eigenvalues. The sonic speeds obtained from the individual single phase have been simply used in the literature for the fastest wave speeds necessary in the HLL scheme. This method has worked fine but proved to be quite diffusive according to our test. To improve the accuracy, we here propose to utilize the analytic eigenvalues evaluated from an approximate Jacobian matrix lot the fastest wave speeds. The interfacial transfer terms were dropped in constituting the Jacobian matrix for this purpose. The present scheme proved efficient, robust and accurate in comparison with other existing methods. We solved the cavitating flow problem using the present scheme. The result shows more detailed wave structure in the cavitating process caused by the strong expansion waves.

  • In this paper, the conducted EMI reduction performances of active feed-forward current-sensing current-actuation (CSCA) and voltage-sensing current-actuation (VSCA) filters for a three-phase induction motor drive system are evaluated by experiments. For comparison purposes, the conducted EMI (CM emission, DM emission and total emission) of a three-phase induction motor drive with a conventional CM choke, a conventional CM choke in series with an active VSCA filter, and an active CSCA filter (where the CM choke was modified and used as a sensing current transformer) were compared to the case of a system without any filter inserted. Experimental results show that the active CSCA and VSCA filters can improve the CM reduction performance of the conventional CM choke by about 5 dB especially at low-frequencies. However, for DM comparisons, it shows that there is no different between cases with and without filters inserted.

  • Both ratio error and phase angle error in voltage transformer(VT) depend on values of burden of VT used. A method of evaluation for linearity of ratio error and phase angle error in VT measurement equipment have been developed using the standard resistance burdens, with negligible AC-DC resistance difference less than $10^-6$. These burden consists of five standard resistors, with nominal resistance of 100 $\Omega$, 1 k$\Omega$, 10 k$\Omega$, 100 k$\Omega$, and 1 M$\Omega$. The developed method has been applied in VT measurement equipment of industry and the validity of the developed method has been verified by showing the consistency of the result of linearity obtained using VT with wide ratio error.
