  • The arc melting was employed to prepare undoped $CoSb_3$ compounds and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. Specimen annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs showed sound microstructure. However, considerable voids and cracks were found after annealing at above $500^{\circ}C$. It seems to be attributed to the phase dissociation and thermal expansion due to phase transitions during annealing and cooling. Single phase $\delta-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by annealing at $400^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. In the case of increasing annealing temperature, phase decompositions occurred. Undoped $CoSb_3$ showed p-type conduction and intrinsic semiconducting behavior at all temperatures examined. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by annealing and they were closely related to phase transitions.

  • A (disk-like liquid crystal (DLC) monomer/liquid crystals(LCs)/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) composite was irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light. The (DLC network/LCs/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) was formed in the homeotropically oriented smectic A(SA) phase by the surface orientation treatment and the electric field. A focal-conic texture exhibiting strong light scattering appeared in the heat-induced chiral nematic phase(N${\ast}$) of the composite upon heating. Thermo-recording in the composite system has been realized by using a He-Ne laser. The laser irradiation was induced the phase transitions from SA phase to chiral nematic(N${\ast}$) phase in the composite system.

  • Single crystals of kalsilite were synthesized by hydrothermal method at 420$^{\circ}C$-480$^{\circ}C$ and 100 atm-1500 atm. The crystal habits are similar to those of KLiSiO4 single crystals. The crystal structure was investigated by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction. The space group of kalsilite is P63. Phase transitiions were determined by use of DTA and high temperature X-ray Guinier camera. Phase transitions of kalsilite are summerized and discussed.

  • Metal ions show various transitions in the cathode of a lithium-ion battery. The diffusion process of lithiumions and the phase transition in the cathode need to be thoroughly understood for the advanced design of an improved lithium-ion battery. Here, we employ a phase field model to simulate the diffusion of lithiumions and to study the phase transition in the cathode.

  • The microstructural transitions of aqueous micellar solutions of cetyltrime-thylammonium bromide and sodiumdodecyl sulfate by adding 1-hexanol were investigated, measuring the concentrations of equilibrated phases and the electrical conductivities at the low concentrations of surfactants, where the solobilities of 1-hexanol varied significantly, at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 45$^{\circ}C$. Ternary phase diagrams of multiphase regions, constructed by liquid chromatography analysis and by counting the number of phase of samples, consisted of one three-phase region and three two-phase regions. One of the two-phase regions was found to equilibrate an aqueous micellar solution and a liquid crystal, and had a critical point between them. Near this region, the solubility curve varied abruptly, and the isotropic solution turned birefrigent. The conductivities of the single phase regions above the critical point increased up to a certain point as 1-hexanol added, and then decreased, representing the microstructural transition at the supercritical region. Further, the solubility of 1-hexanol in aqueous micellar solution was found to increase as temperature and the number of hydrophilelipophile balance of surfactants increase.
