The aim of this study was to investigate the change in compressive strength, freacture behavior and degradation of piezoelectric properties with compressive cyclic loading in Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 of tetragonal, morphotropic phase boundary and rhombohedral composition. The highest compressive strength was found in rhombohedral composition. After poling treatment the strength increased by 8.4% and 6.5% in tetragonal and morphotropic phase boundary compositions respectively while changed little in rhombohedral. The increase of compressive strength after poling treatment is believed to be due to the internal stress around grain boundary by domain alginment toward electric field direction in the microstructures having tetragonality and the occurrence of domain switching to the direction perpendicular to electrical field during fracture. Fracture mode relatively change from transgranular to intergranular was observed in the large grain sized tetragonal and morphotropic phase boundary compositions before and after poling but the transgranular fracture mode always remained in the rhombohedral composition. From the X-ray diffractometer analysis the domains parallel to the electric field direction is known to undergo rearrangement during the cyclic loading into random direction that is responsible for the degradation of piezoelectric property.
After casting button-type small ingots of ternary Fe-Mn-S alloys which had three different Mn/S ratios (1, 5 and 70) in a vacuum arc furnace, the effect of the ratio on the sulfide formation was investigated. In case of the Mn/S ratio of 1, if alloy composition was located in an iron-rich corner on a Fe-Mn-S ternary phase diagram, only duplex MnS-FeS sulfide films were observed in the grain boundary. If the alloy composition was located in the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, primary globular dendritic sulfides and dendritic sulfide slags were generated within the grain and tubular monotectic sulfides were also detected in the grain boundary. When the Mn/S ratio was 5, if the alloy composition was in the iron-rich corner, only bead-like sulfides were generated. On the other hand, if the composition was in the miscibility gap area, globular dendritic sulfides and dendritic sulfide slags were generated in the form of primary sulfide inclusions and rod-like eutectic sulfides were observed in the grain boundary. Especially, if the contents of Mn and S increased more in the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, primary globular sulfides containing iron intrusions were observed. In case of Mn/S ratio of 70, if the contents of Mn and S was decreased in the Fe corner of the phase diagram, only bead-like sulfides were observed in the grain boundary. Despite the composition was outside the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, if the contents of Mn and S increased, clusters of fine sulfide particles as well as fine spherical primary monophase sulfides were observed in the grain boundary.
The morphotropic phase boundary and phase transitions of the solid solutiion system, (1-x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-PbTiO3+xPbTiO3 were studied by investigating changes in crystal structure, variations in permittivity with temperature, and calorimetric behavior. It was observed that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of this solid solutiion system was at near 14 mol% of PbTiO3. Compositions containing less than 10mol% PbTiO3 (x<0.1) exhibited a phase transition, i.e. ferroelectric rhombohedrallongrightarrowparaelectric paraelectric cubic, with increasing temperature. Composition containing more than 14 mol% PbTiO3 (x 0.14) showed a phase transition from ferroelectric tetragonal to paraelectric cubic. In the composition range of 0.1$\varepsilon$ (T) curve, which coincided with a phase transition from ferroelectric rhombohedral to an intermediate phase, was also found.
The water test results indicated that the impurities had detrimetal effect on the wear resistance of silicon nitride and the effects were getting severe as the temperature increased. Especially when Ca existed as an impurity the detrimental effects was the most severe. These results were resulted from the fact that impurities lowered the mechanical properties of the grain boundary phase of silicon nitride. The wear test results of glass/glass-ceramic specimens having a similar composition to the grain boundary phase of silicon nitride revea-led that the specimen containing CaO showed the lowest wear resistance. The existence of Fe and Ca at the grain boundary phase assisted forming a grain boundary phase with relatively low refractoriness. Therefore at a given wear condition the removal of deformed layer would be easier. The results showed that the glass phases could be modified by heat-treatment and this modification improved tribological characteristics of the silicon nitride.
Electrically-induced strain(S) and polarization(P) for Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3-PbTiO3(1-x)PSN-xPT) crystalline solutions were studied. From the compositional dependence of S and P we could observe two maximum values at x=0.10 and x=0.425. It is considered that PSNT10(x=0.10) composition is the structural phase boundary to indicate the variable order-disorder[VOD] region. PSNT(x=0.425) composition is the morphotropic phase boundary[MPB] to indicate the rhombohedral to tetragonal phase transition. Higher S (0.437%) and P (0.3974$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$) values were attained by the La substitution (5 wt%) at Pb site in the MPB composition of 57.5PSN-42.5PT.
In order to identify the origin of phase coexistence at morphotropic tetragonal and rhombohedral boundary in PZT ceramics, the effect of chemical inhomogeneity on phase coexistence region was investigated. Two kinds of PZT ceramics with different chemical homogeneity were prepared by conventional solid state reaction and co-precipitation method. There was coexistence of tetragonal and rhombohedral phase over a wide composition range in PZT ceramics calcined by solid state reaction, and there was also phase coexistence of which region was reduced considerably in sintered samples. And phase coexistence region was not observed in co-precipitated PZT ceramics(within 1 mole%). Therefore compositional fluctuation is considered to be major origin of the phase coexistence at morphotropic phae boundary in PZT ceramics.
In this feature article, we briefly review the new methods we have utilized recently in the investigation of morphology and phase behavior of block copolymers. We first describe the chromatographic fractionation method to purify block copolymers from their side products of mainly homopolymers or block copolymer precursors inadvertently terminated upon addition of the next monomer in the sequential anionic polymerization. The chromatographic method is extended to the fractionation of the individual block of diblock copolymers which can yield the diblock copolymer fractions of different composition and molecular weight, which also have narrower distributions in both molecular weight and composition. A more detailed phase diagram could be constructed from the set of block copolymer fractions without the need of acquiring many block copolymers each prepared by anionic polymerization. The fractions with narrow distribution in both molecular weight and composition exhibit better long-range ordering and sharper phase transition. Next, epitaxial relationships between two ordered structures in block copolymer thin film is discussed. We employed the direct visualization method, transmission electron microtomography(TEMT) to scrutinize the grain boundary structure.
Morphotropic tetragonal and rhombohederal phase boundary(MPB) in PZT system was calculated and the effect of mechanical stress and electric field on the MPB was examined using phenomenological thermodynamic theory proposed by Devonshire. Mechanical stress and electric field was calculated to change free energies of phases and shift MPB. The stable composition range of the phase, of which spontaneous strain and spontaneous polarization aligned to the direction of tensile stress or electirc field, was expanded.
Alpha-SiAlON ceramics having various compositions and modifying cations were investigated with respect to their phase stability, transformation kinetics. and resulting microstructures. Each composition was heat treated at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h and measured the $\alpha$-SiAlON transformation. The phase-boundary composition in the single-phase $\alpha$-SiAlON region showed sluggish transformation from $\alpha$-$Si_3N_4$ to $\alpha$-SiAlON compared to the phase-center composition in the diagram. Using the different rare earth modifying cations, dependence of transformation kinetics on the phase stability in a fixed composition was also explained. By changing size of the stable u-phase region with exchanging cations, systematic change in transformation was observed. Transformation rate of $\alpha$-SiAlON at low temperature has an important role on controlling the final microstructure. Less transformation gives more chances to develop elongated grain in the microstructure.
SiAlON glasses are silicates or alumino-silicates, containing Mg, Ca, Y or rare earth (RE) ions as modifiers, in which nitrogen atoms substitute for oxygen atoms in the glass network. These glasses are found as intergranular films and at triple point junctions in silicon nitride ceramics and these grain boundary phases affect their fracture behaviour. This paper provides an overview of the preparation of M-SiAlON glasses and outlines the effects of composition on properties. As nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in SiAlON glasses, increases are observed in glass transition temperatures, viscosities, elastic moduli and microhardness. These property changes are compared with known effects of grain boundary glass chemistry in silicon nitride ceramics. Oxide sintering additives provide conditions for liquid phase sintering, reacting with surface silica on the $Si_3N_4$ particles and some of the nitride to form SiAlON liquid phases which on cooling remain as intergranular glasses. Thermal expansion mismatch between the grain boundary glass and the silicon nitride causes residual stresses in the material which can be determined from bulk SiAlON glass properties. The tensile residual stresses in the glass phase increase with increasing Y:Al ratio and this correlates with increasing fracture toughness as a result of easier debonding at the glass/${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ interface.
