  • Most captive canids and felids at Zoos in advanced countries have been examined enough to apply artificial reproductive techniques to them. We investigated reproductive hormones and vaginal epithelial cells of a 6-year-old, female coyote, hoping these data could eventually be extended to artificial insemination with frozen-thawed conspecific semen at Seoul Zoo. As a relative of pet dogs, coyote exhibited a similar appearance with only minor differences. In vaginal smear, an increase in the number of superficial cells suggests that the bitch has reached a state close to estrus. A sudden decrease of estradiol and increase of progesterone is considered as a preovulatory event. Vaginal epithelial cells and hormones might be useful for determining the optimal time of artificial insemination in coyotes' breeding.

  • This study was performed to observe changes of the intraocular pressure following cranial cervical ganglion block with the four different concentrations of lidocaine in beagle dogs with the normal intraocular pressure. We performed by the crossover test in ten beagle dogs divided into four groups, which were 2%, 1%, 0.5% and 0.25% lidocaine group. All experimental dogs received each four times cranial cervical ganglion block using 2 ml of lidocaine with the four different concentrations. The blocks were separately done at a week intervals in random order. Horner#s syndrome was observed in all groups. The intraocular pressure in the blocked side was significantly increased to 5 min in the 1% lidocaine group compared to the baseline (p<0.05). The intraocular pressure of 2% and 1% lidocaine groups were decreased between 25 and 45 min following cranial cervical ganglion block, while those of 0.5% and 0.25% lidocaine groups were unchanged. In conclusion, these results suggest that cranial cervical ganglion block affect on the change of intraocular pressure and 0.5% and 0.25% lidocaine are inadequate concentrations for the change of intraocular pressure in the dog with normal intraocular pressure.

  • While the contents of protein, fat, fiber, sodium, vitamin A, and vitamin D in dry dog food were 22.0%, 7.8%. 5.4%, 0.36%, 2035 IU/100g and 201 IU/100g, respectevely, those in dry cat food were 29.8%, 6.5%, 4.5%, 0.38%, 1543 IU/100g and 163 IU/100g, respectively. Concerning the lipid contents of pet food, the concentration of unsturated fatty acid was slightly higher of dry dog food(59.2%) than that of dry cat food(55.9%), but the differences was statistically not significant. The lipid peroxide concentration in dry dog food after storage in a refrigerator at $4^{\circ}C$ or dark place of room temperture at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 30 days(8.0 nmol/g and 7.8 nmol/g) was not different from the value at the beginning of storage. However, upon storage in direct sunlight at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ of room temperture, the concentration increased 4.9-fold(35.5 nmol/g) after 5 days and 10.2-fold(73.6 nmol/g) after 30 days. These results suggest that pet food may be refrigerated or stored in a dark place after unsealing.

  • In the image field, data augmentation refers to increasing the amount of data through an editing method such as rotating or cropping a photo. In this study, a generative adversarial network (GAN) image was created using CycleGAN, and various colors of dogs were reflected through data augmentation. In particular, dog data from the Stanford Dogs Dataset and Oxford-IIIT Pet Dataset were used, and 10 breeds of dog, corresponding to 300 images each, were selected. Subsequently, a GAN image was generated using CycleGAN, and four learning groups were established: 2,000 original photos (group I); 2,000 original photos + 1,000 GAN images (group II); 3,000 original photos (group III); and 3,000 original photos + 1,000 GAN images (group IV). The amount of data in each learning group was augmented using existing data augmentation methods such as rotating, cropping, erasing, and distorting. The augmented photo data were used to train the MobileNet_v3_Large, ResNet-152, InceptionResNet_v2, and NASNet_Large frameworks to evaluate the classification accuracy and loss. The top-3 accuracy for each deep neural network model was as follows: MobileNet_v3_Large of 86.4% (group I), 85.4% (group II), 90.4% (group III), and 89.2% (group IV); ResNet-152 of 82.4% (group I), 83.7% (group II), 84.7% (group III), and 84.9% (group IV); InceptionResNet_v2 of 90.7% (group I), 88.4% (group II), 93.3% (group III), and 93.1% (group IV); and NASNet_Large of 85% (group I), 88.1% (group II), 91.8% (group III), and 92% (group IV). The InceptionResNet_v2 model exhibited the highest image classification accuracy, and the NASNet_Large model exhibited the highest increase in the accuracy owing to data augmentation.

  • Nowadays, the family system has changed from a large extended family group to a more nuclear family and the number of people who live by themselves has been increasing. Moreover, Korea is becoming an aged society, and pets are becoming more important as leave the family home. So a lot of people in Korea now consider pets as their family members due largely to the drastic change of their life style. Therefore, the rate of importing commodities for pets like cats and dogs has been increasing dramatically. In this study, in response to the growing interest in the pet industry, I have studied recent trends and types in the pets wear markets which are still in the first stage of development in Korea. In order to enhance the possibility of mass producing pets ready-made clothes for making the unit cost lower, firstly, I presented a new basic design and pattern of pets wear made up of general textile. After that, following basic purpose of pet wear, I classified decorative clothes into party wear, everyday wear and street wear and then I developed the pattern and made a pair of works for each item totaling 6 in all. I hope that the number of Korean companies which can enhance their reputation through by marketing these products in Korean as well as all around the world will increase. I believe this will be possible because by taking advantage of the easy pattern developed in this thesis. They will be able to mass produce their own high quality pets wear brand.

  • This paper presents the development of a mobile application that detects and identifies canine skin diseases by training a deep learning-based U-Net model to infer the presence and location of skin lesions from images. U-Net, primarily used in medical imaging for image segmentation, is effective in distinguishing specific regions of an image in a polygonal form, making it suitable for identifying lesion areas in dogs. In this study, six major canine skin diseases were defined as classes, and the U-Net model was trained to differentiate among them. The model was then implemented in a mobile app, allowing users to perform lesion analysis and prediction through simple camera shots, with the results provided directly to the user. This enables pet owners to monitor the health of their pets and obtain information that aids in early diagnosis. By providing a quick and accurate diagnostic tool for pet health management through deep learning, this study emphasizes the significance of developing an easily accessible service for home use.
