  • Global fates of polychlorinated biphenyl(PCB) were investigated with a fugacity based multimedia transport and fate model, Globe-POP(persistent organic pollutant). The accumulation of PCB was directly affected by the emission patterns of PCB into the atmosphere and surface areas of environmental compartments. Partition coefficients and reaction rates also influenced on the accumulation patterns of PCB. The emission patterns of PCB in 10 climate zones were consistent for the past 70 years, while the contribution of PCB in high-latitude zones to the globe has increased by cold condensation. Considering the amounts of emission and accumulation of PCB, the North temperature zone is regarded as an important source and sink of PCB. Meanwhile, in spite of no significant sources, POPs accumulate in Antarctic environments mainly due to extremely low temperature. Finally we suggested that a global water balance accounting for snow/ice should be incorporated into multimedia environmental models for high-latitude zones and polar regions with the seasonal snow pack and/or permanent ice caps. The modified model will be useful to evaluate the influence of climate change on the fate of POPs.

  • CALPUFF is one of the recommended air pollution models by EPA with AERMOD. It has been used to simulate the ambient concentration of critical air pollutants as well as non-critical pollutants such as persistent organic matters and the organic materials causing odor. In this model, the air pollutants go through dispersion, transportation, chemical reaction, and deposition process. These mechanisms are significantly influenced by meteorological condition. This study produces the meteorological field in three different methods for the simulation of $SO_2$ using CALPUFF: 1) CALMET model by using both ground-level and aerological observation, 2) CALMET model by using MM5 results with NCEP/NCAR reanalyzed data, 3) CALMET model by using MM5 results in which FDDA is applied with NCEP/NCAR reanalyzed data as well as the meteorological data of Korea Meteorological Administration. As a result of CALPUFF model, the resolved concentration of $SO_2$ showed different behaviors in three cases. For the first case, the fluctuation of SO2 concentration was frequently observed while the fluctuation is reduced in the second and third cases. In addition, the maximum concentration of $SO_2$ in the first case was about 2~3 times higher than the second case, and about 4~6 times higher than the third case. These results can be caused by the accuracy of the resolved meteorological field. It is inferred that the meteorological field of the first case could be less accurate than other two cases. These results show that the use of correct meteorological data can improve the result of dispersion model. Moreover, the contribution of various sources such as point, line, and area sources on the ambient concentration of air pollutant can be roughly estimated from the sensitivity analysis.

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the persistence of HCH in atmosphere, soil, sediment and water of the western and southern regions of Korea. The samples from the western region were collected from Anmyeon Island, and the samples from the southern region were collected from Kimhae and Busan. The concentration of HCH isomers in atmosphere showed the pattern of $\alpha$-HCH>$\gamma$-HCH>$\beta$-HCH. The regions with high HCH concentration in the atmosphere are the regions that have been highly exposed to HCH used in the past, and the areas that have been influenced by the long range transport. The HCH that persists in the soil, water and sediment evaporates into the atmosphere, showing the characteristics of Air-Surface exchange. When the regional concentration distributions are compared, the concentration of HCH was higher in the atmosphere of a plain and the cities near the plain, than the urban areas. In this study, the ratio of $\alpha/\beta$-HCH was used as an indicator for estimating the source of Technical HCH and Lindane. According to the result, the contribution of Lindane was high in Kimhae plain and Kimhae urban areas. However, in Busan, the contribution of Technical HCH was higher than Lindane. In case of Anmyeon Island, the western region of Korea had high contribution from Tehcnical HCH. In soil and sediment, $\beta$-HCH was dominant. In water, $\gamma$-HCH was dominant among other isomers. Such results are due to $\gamma$-HCH inLindane. Furthermore, the source of $\gamma$-HCH in urban areas is assumed to be the use of medicine, medical supplies and other living supplies. Based on the results of this study, the management of HCH, a newly list up emerging POPs, should be strengthened by further research on sources, fate, persistency, accumulation and exposures and etc. to the risk assessments.

  • We investigated the concentration and the sources of ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants [i.e., 17 toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), 12 coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs), and 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)] in waste papers and lumbers from industrial complexes. The total concentrations in waste papers and lumbers ranged from 9.69~176.77 pg/g-dry and 0.14~0.25 pg/g-dry for 17 PCDD/Fs, 109.95~4097.25 pg/g-dry and 28.23~59.88 pg/g-dry for 12 Co-PCBs and 9.30~52.18 ng/g-dry and 0.82~1.82 ng/g-dry for 16 PAHs respectively. Generally, the concentration of these pollutants in waste papers was higher than those in waste lumbers. OCDD was dominant in waste papers and lumbers and the PCDD/F patterns of these samples were similar with that of stack gas. The distribution patterns of Co-PCBs in wastes were related with commercial PCB products, indicating the effect of commercial PCB products on ubiquitous environment. The diagnostic ratios of several PAH compounds in waste paper showed that they were related with pyrogenic sources.

  • POPs in sediments and soil in the PRD are comparable to or much higher than those reported in other regions. Some sites may be classified as POPs- polluted with high ecological risks. Large-scale land transform in the process of regional urbanization may facilitate the transfer of POPs in the soil to the sedimentary system by enhancing the soil run-off. Urban atmospheric PCBs in PRD are found to be less than some of the North American or European urbans, but PAHs are significantly higher. The center of the PRD has been the major source area of PAHs and organochlorine pesticides in the PRD. The northern part of the PRD serves as a regional sink for the air particulates and affiliated POPs.

  • This study investigated primarily the toxic effects of bis(tributyltin)oxide (TBT) and DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) on the mortality of adult Acartia omorii and barnacle nauplii as well as the hatching rate of A. omorii. Subsequently, compound effects of TBT and DDT on the mortality of immature copepods were tested in order to assess whether or not synergistic influence existed in the mixture of sublethal concentration of two pollutants. Mortality of adult A. omorii increased as exposure concentration of DDT increased in the range of from 0.0001 to 1ppm. Egg hatching rate of the copepod showed no distinctive difference in the range between 0.1 and 10ppm, while barnacle nauplii showed abnormal motility of their appendages in the range of 0.0001 to 1 ppm. Mortality of adult A. omorii increased as TBT concentration increased within the range of 1 and 10 ppb, whereas egg hatching rate of the copepod showed no linear response to the same exposure range. Moreover, copepod nauplii were almost motionless even though copepod eggs hatched under the exposure condition of TBT $(0{\sim}10 ppb)$ and DDT $(0{\sim}10 ppm)$, respectively, suggesting that the nauplii are hard to develop into adult stage. On the basis of the sublethal concentration less than the 24-h $LC_{50}$, 0.001 ppm (DDT) and 2 ppb (TBT) were selected to confirm the compound effects of two pollutants on the mortality of immature copepods. Mortality of immature copepods under the condition of mixture of the two pollutants was higher than that in the single exposure condition. This result seems to indicate that synergistic effects of sublethal toxicants can make a more hazardous effect on the survival of immature copepods even though the concentration of single toxicant is not lethal to copepods in the marine environment.

  • Objectives: Pine needles are used as passive air samplers (PAS) of atmospheric persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This study was carried out in order to investigate whether pine needles can also be used as a PAS of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Methods: PBDEs in one to three year-old pine needles were analyzed with HRGC/HRMS. Results: PBDEs in the atmosphere were accumulated in the pine needles. The rate of increase in concentration of lower substituted PBDEs (tri- through hepta-) in pine needles was linear. The rate of increase of the higher substituted PBDEs (octa- through deca-) was also liner, but only up to two year-old pine needles. The concentration did not increase further in older pine needles. Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that young pine needles, those that are two years old or less, are recommended for use as PAS of atmospheric PBDEs.

  • The contaminatlon of soil and groundwater by leachate from impmperly managed landfills, or by cheiicals and gasoline leaked flu underground storage tanks has buou a serious urldwide environmental problei. Most of those contaminants are adsorptive and absorptive into soul, while they are hardly soluble in water. Thus, the rate of self purification is very slow, causing persistent problems in water use and environmental protection when the contamination is left untreated. Biological remediatlon technologies utilize the ertraordlnary caperbllity of microorganisms In degrading a tilde spectrum of organic compounds. Among them, an in situ bioremediation technology Involves injection of supplementary materials into the subsurfce in order to bring about a significant Increase in the microbial activity. The Increased microbial activity helps remove the pollutants in situ, that is, without digging out contaminants, soil, or water. This paper focused on the features, possibilities, and limitations of the bioremedition technology.

  • Copper-based Metal-organic framework (MOF) namely ([Cu (INA)2]-MOF) is synthesized by ball milling and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the topography, microstructure, and elemental evidence determination, powdered X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the crystallinity measurement, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis was performed to determine the thermal stability of the material, and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for functional groups identification. The use of [Cu (INA)2]-MOF as hazardous removal material of β-agonists as persistent hazardous micro-pollutants in our environmental water is first reported in this study. The removal efficiency of the Cu-MOF is successfully determined to be 97.7% within 40 minutes, and the MOF has established an exceptional removal capacity of 835 mg L-1 with 95 % percent removal on Clenbuterol (CLB) even after the 5th consecutive cycle. The Langmuir model of the adsorption isotherms was shown to be more favourable, while the pseudo-second-order model was found to be favoured in the kinetics. The reaction was exothermic and spontaneous from a thermodynamic standpoint, and the higher temperatures were unfavourable for the adsorption study of the CLB. As a result, the studied MOF have shown promising properties as possible adsorbents for the removal of CLB in wastewater.
