  • Increasing incidences of landslides in Korea are endangering life and damaging property. To ascertain the cause of the rapid increase in landslides in 2020, this study analyzed the correlation between frequency of their occurrence and persistence of rainfall. The study area comprised seven areas in Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Chungcheongnam-do. The used rainfall factors were monthly rainfall in June, July, and August, rainfall during the summer (June-August), rainfall during the monsoon season, and number of precipitation days during the summer and during the monsoon season. The effect of these factors on landslides was identified by comparing them with the occurrence of landslides in the year of increased landslide occurrence in each area. The results confirmed that not only rainfall but also the number of precipitation days during the monsoon season affect the occurrence of landslides. The rapid increase in landslide occurrence in 2020 was attributed to increases in both the number of precipitation days during the monsoon season and rainfall during the monsoon season in 2020. These results are expected to be used as basic data for future landslide warning standards that consider the effect of the persistence of rainfall.

  • We assessed the persistence of eight major cruciferous crops-leaf mustard, oilseed rape, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, turnip, and radish-growing in the field. In the first part of our experiment, we tested the viability of seeds that had been buried at two different soil depths for up to 16 months. We then broadcast seeds over the soil surface and left them undisturbed to investigate the survivorship of the resultant plants over two years. Seed viability was significantly affected by plant taxa and burial depth, but not substantially affected by the duration of burial. Although seeds of leaf mustard had the greatest viability among all crops examined here, the viability rates were significantly lower at 2 cm depth than at 15 cm. Seeds of leaf mustard, oilseed rape, broccoli, turnip, and Chinese cabbage remained viable throughout the 16-month period. A study of plant demography revealed that only leaf mustard and oilseed rape succeeded in producing seeds and overwintering in the undisturbed field. However, neither of those species competed well with other plants long-term and their overall growth and survival rates declined during the evaluation period. In addition, insect herbivory severely decreased the growth of all of these crops. Our results suggest that populations of leaf mustard and oilseed rape do not tend to persist in the field for more than a few years without disturbance and external seed inputs.

  • The impact of snow accumulation and snowmelt in rainfall-runoff modelling was analyzed for the Soyanggang dam basin by comparing the measured and simulated discharges simulated by the NWS-PC model. Sugawara's conceptual model was used to simulate the snow accumulation and snowmelt phenomena and NWS-PC model was employed to simulate rainfall-runoff. Parameters in model calibration were estimated by the Multi-step Automated Calibration Scheme and optimized using SCE-UA algorithm in each step. The results of the model calibration and verification show that the model considering snowmelt process is better than the one without consideration of snowmelt under the performance criteria such as RMSE, PBIAS, NSE, and PME. The measured discharge time series has over 60 days of persistence. Correlograms for each simulation showed that the simulated discharge with snowmelt model reproduce the persistence closely to the measured discharge's while the one without snow accumulation and snowmelt model reproduce only 20 days of persistence. The study result indicates that the inclusion of snow accumulation and snowmelt model is important for the accurate simulation of rainfall-runoff phenomena in the Soyanggang dam basin.

  • Background and Purpose: As it becomes an aging society, interest in senile diseases is increasing. Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and osteoporosis are representative senile diseases. Various studies have reported that AD and osteoporosis share many risk factors that affect each other's incidence. This aimed to determine if active medication treatment of AD could affect the development of osteoporosis. Methods: The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service provided data consisting of diagnosis, demographics, prescription drug, procedures, medical materials, and healthcare resources. In this study, data of all AD patients in South Korea who were registered under the national health insurance system were obtained. The cohort underwent conversion to an Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership-Common Data Model version 5 format. Results: This study included 11,355 individuals in the good persistent group and an equal number of 11,355 individuals in the poor persistent group from the National Health Claims database for AD drug treatment. In primary analysis, the risk of osteoporosis was significantly higher in the poor persistence group than in the good persistence group (hazard ratio, 1.20 [95% confidence interval, 1.09-1.32]; p<0.001). Conclusions: We found that the good persistence group treated with anti-dementia drugs for AD was associated with a significant lower risk of osteoporosis in this nationwide study. Further studies are needed to clarify the pathophysiological link in patients with two chronic diseases.

  • This paper examines the existence of the fund performance persistence and the smart money effect in Korean stock market and tests the flow-induced price pressure (FIPP) hypothesis, that is, fund flows affect individual stock returns and mutual fund performance. This paper also tests whether the FIPP effect can cause the performance persistence using the monthly returns and stock holdings data of 2,702 Korean mutual funds from January 2002 to June 2008. The empirical results indicate that the performance persistence exists significantly for a long time but the smart money effect does not. The hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past 12 months performance and selling funds with the lowest past 12 months performance earns 0.11%~1.05% monthly abnormal returns, on average, in 3 years from portfolio formation month, but the hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past net fund inflows and selling funds with the lowest past net fund inflows cannot earn positive monthly abnormal returns and the size of negative abnormal returns of the portfolio increase as time goes on. We find the evidence that the FIPP hypothesis is significantly supported. We first estimate the FIPP measure for each individual stock using the trading volume resulting from past fund flows and then construct the hedge portfolio by buying stocks with the highest FIPP measure and selling stocks with the lowest FIPP measure. That portfolio earns significantly positive abnormal return, 1.01% at only portfolio formation month and cannot earn significant abnormal returns after formation month. But, the FIPP effect cannot cause the performance persistence because, within the same FIPP measure group, funds with higher past performance still earn higher monthly abnormal returns than those with lower past performance by 0.08%~0.77%, on average, in 2 years. These results imply that the main cause of the performance persistence in Korean stock market is the difference of fund managers' ability rather than the FIPP effect.

  • This study is aimed to examine the variability of consecutive dry days in South Korea. The country is divided into six basins including Han river, Nakdong river, Geum river. Seomjin Yeongsan river, Eastern Coast area and Island area, and three extreme precipitation indices-related to dry days are analyzed at sixty weather stations. Trends of max number of consecutive dry days were unstable during 1973~2010. Variability range of max number of consecutive dry days trends in Nakdong and Seomjin Yeongsan river was larger than that in Han and Geum river. Recently, the range in Nakdong and Seomjin Yeongsan river was bigger and bigger. Maximum dry spell was observed in autumn and winter in most of riverbasins. Especially, Maximum dry spell in winter was more frequent than in other seasons in Nakdong river. Variability range of persistence dry spells was smaller than that of max number of consecutive dry days. However, the increasing trends of the Geum river and the Seomjin Yeongsan river are statistically significant in recent. In Nakdong river, difference between persistence dry spell average and persistence dry spell median was larger than any other riverbasin. It means that there is strong possibility of occurrence of long term consecutive dry days in Nakdong river.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the persistence of DNA in the transgenic chili pepper resistant to cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in the field condition. We analyzed the persistence of genes in the leaf samples obtained from two field conditions, below and above soil. Transgenic and non-transgenic leaf tissues were buried in the soil at a depth of 10 cm or placed on the soil surface. Qualitative and quantitative PCR analysis showed that the amount of transferred genes from the transgenic peppers below and above soil was dropped to 28.3-42.7% one month after buried and it was rapidly reduced to 0.9-3.3% after two months. The transgenes were not detected three to four month after buried. In addition, DNA of the leaves placed below soil decomposed about 8%more than those on soil surface. The gene transfer from decomposing leaves of the transgenic pepper to soil was investigated by PCR analysis with the soil attached to the samples. The PCR result indicated that the gene transfer from the transgenic pepper to soil was not occurred.

  • In order to elucidate a degradation characteristics of herbicide mefenacet in soil, the persistence in soils was studied under laboratory conditions for $90\sim120$ days at $28^{\circ}C$. Mefenacet residues were determined from the two soils which pre-treated by sterilization and flooding, respectively. Non-sterilized upland soil was used as a control. When 70 days elapsed from application time, $55\sim63%$ of mefenacet applied were dissipated in control soils. However, $32\sim33%$ of mefenacet applied were dissipated in the sterilized soils and $33\sim35%$ was dissipated in the flooded soils. 까 lese results indicated that the degradation of mefenacet was assumed to be due to microorganism, especially aerobic microbes. In order to elucidate the influence of water content on the persistence of mefenacet in soil, water content in soils was adjusted to 20, 50, and 80% of the water-holding capacity(Field capacity, WHC). The half-life of mefenacet in soil containing 20% and 50% of WHC were 82 and 73 days, respectively, after incubation for 90 days. However, the half-life in soil containing 80% of WHC was shortened to 61 days. These results indicated that degradation of mefenacet in soil was influenced by the activity of soil microorganism, organic matter content and water content.

  • Objective : We investigated how sensory processing patterns contribute to temperament and character traits in undergraduate students. Methods : A total of 107 undergraduate students were recruited in September 2022 via convenient sampling method. They completed the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and the Temperament and Character Inventory. Multiple regression models were applied to analyze the effect of sensory processing quadrants (low registration, sensation seeking, sensory sensitivity, sensation avoiding) on each temperament (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, persistence) and character (self-directedness, cooperativeness, self-transcendence) traits. Results : Sensation seeking significantly predicted high levels of novelty seeking, reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and self-transcendence but low harm avoidance. Low registration predicted high harm avoidance but low levels of reward dependence, persistence, and self-directedness. Reward dependence was predicted by high sensory sensitivity and low sensation avoiding. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that sensory processing patterns affected novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and self-transcendence in young adults.
