  • Speed and torque control of PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) are usually achieved by using position and speed sensors which require additional mounting space, reduce the reliability in harsh environments and increase the cost of a motor. Therefore, many studies have been performed for the elimination of speed and position sensors. In this paper, a novel speed sensorless control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor based on SVMR(Support Vector Machine Regression) is presented. The SVM regression method is an algorithm that estimates an unknown mapping between a system's input and outputs, from the available data or training data. Two well-known different voltage model is necessary to estimate the speed of a PMSM. The validity and the usefulness of proposed algorithm are thoroughly verified through numerical simulation.

  • An electrical machine for a high-speed flywheel for energy storage in large hybrid electric vehicles is described. Design choices for the machine are motivated: it is a radial-flux external-rotor permanent-magnet synchronous machine without slots in the stator iron and with a shielding cylinder. An analytical model of the machine is briefly introduced whereafter optimization of the machine is discussed. Three optimization criteria were chosen: (1) torque; (2) total stator losses and (3) induced eddy current loss on the rotor. The influence of the following optimization variables on these criteria is investigated: (1) permanent-magnet array; (2) winding distribution and (3) machine geometry. The paper shows that an analytical model of the machine is very useful in optimization.

  • For open-end permanent magnet synchronous machine(PMSM) with dual inverter system, where one inverter is connected to the source and the other is flying, the dc link voltage of the flying inverter can be boosted through the machine. For this reason, when compared with single inverter drive system, higher voltage can be applied to PMSM, and higher torque can be generated in the flux weakening region. In this case, however, active and reactive powers are separately supplied by each inverter to maintain the dc link voltage of flying inverter. Therefore, the required flux weakening control is different from the conventional method for a single inverter drive system. This paper proposes the novel flux weakening control method which maximizes the active voltage component in a dual inverter PMSM drive system. The proposed method was demonstrated and verified through experimental results.

  • This paper presents a comparative study of position sensorless control schemes based on back-electromotive force (back-EMF) estimation in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). The characteristics of the estimated back-EMF signals are analyzed using various mathematical models of a PMSM. The transfer functions of the estimators, based on the extended EMF model in the rotor reference frame, are derived to show their similarity. They are then used for the analysis of the effects of both the motor parameter variations and the voltage errors due to inverter nonlinearity on the accuracy of the back-EMF estimation. The differences between a phase-locked-loop (PLL) type estimator and a Luenberger observer type estimator, generally used for extracting rotor speed and position information from estimated back-EMF signals, are also examined. An experimental study with a 250-W interior-permanent-magnet machine has been performed to validate the analyses.

  • The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drive systems with ball-screw, gear and timing-belt are widely used in industrial applications such as NC machine, machine tools, robots and factory automation. These systems have torsional vibration in torque transmission from servo motor to mechanical load due to the mechanical couplings. This vibration makes it difficult to achieve quick responses of speed and may result in damage to the mechanical plant. This paper presents adaptive notch filter with auto searching function of vibration frequency to reject the mechanical vibration of linear feeder system with PMSM. The proposed adaptive notch filter can suppress the torque command signal of PMSM in the resonant bandwidth for reject the mechanical torsional vibration. However, the resonant frequency can vary with conditions of mechanical load system and coupling devices, adaptive notch filter can auto search the vibration frequency and suppress the vibration signal bandwidth. Computer simulation and experimental results shows the verification of the proposed adaptive notch filter in linear feeder system with PMSM.

  • In this paper, the implementation of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) model based on the Matlab/Simulink is described. Due to the analysis of the mathematical dq-modeling, a vector controlled PMSM drive simulation is approached. With the simulated system, unlike in black block models, all machine parameters are accessible for control and verification. Based on the Matlab/Simulink, the model of the PMSM with load torque is established, the simulation is studied and some conclusions are given.

  • In this paper, the rotor losses in high-speed permanent synchronous motor (PMSM) considering the operating condition are discussed. In order to maintain the mechanical integrity of a high-speed permanent magnet machine rotor intended for high-speed operation, the rotor assembly is often retained within a stainless steel or Carbon-Fiber/Epoxy sleeve. The sleeve is exposed to fields produced by the stator from either the slotting or the mmf harmonics that are not synchronous with rotor losses. On the basis of analytical field analysis, the rotor losses are analyzed. In particular, the no-load, rated with air-cooled, and forced water cooled conditions are considered. The results are validated extensively by comparison with non-linear finite element method (FEM).

  • Main reasons for causing vibration in a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are torque ripple and radial force harmonics, and hence, both of them are undesirable in high-precision machine tools and accurate motion-control actuators. Recent research on radial force is the prediction of major vibration frequencies and modes in terms of motor design such as different winding types and a fractional slot number per pole in the stator. Also, proper phase current has been investigated for minimizing radial force harmonics. During the previous studies, all the motors are assumed to be ideally built up in terms of mechanical dimensions, but it is impossible due to dimensional variation within or outside tolerance in production. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of several key factors on radial force is examined and compared regarding manufacturing imperfection.
