  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • Recently, we have developed a linear brushless DC motor(LBLDCM) with high speed and precise position control performance to apply it to the semiconductor assembly and inspection machinery. It is composed of double side alignment by two armature-stator pairs and each pair is consist of a moving armature with 8 poles by 3 phase coils and a stator with rare earth permanent magnet (Nd-Fe-B) arrays. Through the thrust force analysis on a simplified and whole model of the suggested LBLDCM by an Electromagnetic FEM solver, skew angle of magnet arrays to reduce the thrust force ripple and the winding conditions of the armature is designed. From experimental results, the user's requirements was satisfied and we confirmed distinctly that the repeatable accuracy less than a micron of the linear motion can be obtained at high speed by the developed LBLDCM. This is owing to directly drive the work without the gear train.

  • In this paper, electromagnetic forces acting on the rotor surface of a BLDC motor for hard disk drive are calculated by the finite element field analysis. The frequency characteristics of torque ripple, local force and unbalanced magnetic force as a source of mechanical vibration area analyzed. Ring-type permanent magnets for the brushless DC motor are apt to have different magnetization levels at each pole because of the unbalanced air gap between the magnet surface and the magnetizer fixture during the multi-poles magnetizing process. This paper discusses the effect of the unsymmetric magnetization distribution in the permanent magnet on the brushless DC motor performances. As a result, the unbalanced magnetic force acting on the rotor surface and the torque ripple are examined for the motor with an unsymmetric magnetization distribution, and compared with those of an ideally symmetric motor.

  • Two PWM techniques using space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) are proposed for a two-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven by a two-phase eight-switch inverter. A two-phase motor with two symmetric stator windings is usually driven by a two-phase four-, six-, or eight-switch inverter. Compared with a four- and six-switch inverter, a two-phase eight-switch inverter can achieve larger power output. For two-phase motor drives, the SVPWM technique achieves more efficient DC bus voltage utilization and less harmonic distortion of the output voltage. For a two-phase PMSM fed by a two-phase eight-switch inverter under a normal SVPWM scheme, each of the eight PWM trigger signals for the inverter have to be changed twice in a cycle, causing a higher PWM frequency. Based on the normal SVPWM scheme, two effective SVPWM schemes are investigated in order to reduce the PWM frequency by rearranging four comparison values, while achieving the same function as the normal PWM scheme. A detailed explanation of the normal and two proposed SVPWM schemes is illustrated in the paper. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed schemes achieve a better steady performance with lower switching losses compared with the normal scheme.

  • Condition monitoring of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and detecting faults such as eccentricity and demagnetization are essential for ensuring system reliability. Motor current signal analysis is the most commonly used precursor for detecting faults in the PMSM drive system. However, the current signature responds sensitively to the load and temperature of the motor, thereby making it difficult to monitor faults in real- applications. Therefore, in this study, a condition monitoring methodology that detects motor faults, including their classification with standstill conditions, is proposed. The objective is to detect and classify faults of PMSMs by using programmable inverter without additional sensors and systems for detection. Both DC and AC were applied through the d-axis of a three-phase motor, and the change in incremental inductance was investigated to detect and classify faults. Simulation with finite element analysis and experiments were performed on PMSMs in healthy conditions as well as with eccentricity and demagnetization faults. Based on the results obtained from experiments, the proposed method was confirmed to detect and classify types of faults, including their severity.

  • This paper proposes a new sensorless speed control scheme of permanent magnet DC motor using a numerical model and hysteresis controller, which requires neither shaft encoder, speed estimator nor PI controllers. By supplying the identical instantaneous voltage to both model and motor in the direction of reducing torque difference, the rotor speed approaches to the model speed, namely setting value and the system can control motor speed precisely. As the numerical model whose electric parameters are the same as those of the actual motor is adopted, the armature rotating speed can be converged to the setting value by controlling torque on both sides to be equalized. And the hysteresis controller controls torque by restricting the torque errors within respective hysteresis bands, and motor torque are controlled by the armature voltage. The experiment results indicate good speed and load responses from the low speed range to the high, show accurate speed changing performance.

  • This paper proposes the sensorless vector control scheme of a Non-salient permanent-magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) using programmable low pass filter (PLPF) to estimate a stator flux with the information of a rotor position and speed. The sesorless vector control of PMSM using PLPF can solves the dc drift problem associated with a pure integrator and a LPF. Also, the PLPF has the phase and gain compensator to estimate exactly rotor position and speed. Therefore, the information of a position and speed is exactly estimated because the drift and offset problems are solved by the PLPF. The experimental results show good performance over the 10[%] of the rated speed and under load condition.

  • This paper introduces the improved analysis method for PMDC (Permanent Magnet DC) motors. The effect of field yoke is considered by equivalent area. Overhang effect, caused by different axial length of magnet and armature, is analyzed by 3D EMCN(Equivalent Magnet Circuit Network) method. Then brush contact resistance and mechanical loss extracted by experimental data are used in characteristic analysis. The validity of the proposed method is verified by the comparison of analysis results and experimental ones.

  • Among low power servo applications, classical DC motors are very popular because they are reasonably cheap and easy to control. The main disadvantage is the mechanical collector which has only a limited life period. Also, brush sparking can destroy the rotor coil, generate EMC problems. So permanent magnet brushless do motors and drives are being used increasingly in a wide range of applications. This has been made possible with the advantages of high performance permanent magnets with high coercively and residual magnetic, which make it possible for the PM to have superior power density, torque to inertia ratio and efficiency, when compared to an induction or conventional dc machine. This paper presents the design of a PM brushless dc motor drive simplistically operates as a classical dc motor. The BLDC motor drive system for this paper composes to the power integrated circuits, the one chip device. And several simple semiconductors add to drive system for a motor drive system simplistically operates as a conventional dc motor. Test results confirmed the feasibility of the proposed motor drive system design.
