영산강 유역의 유출량 및 수질자료에 대한 비선형 동역학과 웨이블렛 이론의 적용 (Application of Nonlinear Dynamics and Wavelet Theory for Discharge and Water Quality Data in Youngsan River Basin)

  • The present study analyzed noise reduction and long/short-term components for discharge, TOC concentration, and TOC load data in order to understand the data characteristics better. For the purpose, wavelet transform which can reduce noise from raw data and has flexible resolution in time and frequency domain was applied and the theory of nonlinear dynamics was also used to determine the last decomposition level for wavelet transform. Wavelet function of 'db10' and the 7th level for the last decomposition of wavelet transform were applied for the all data in the present study. Also the results revealed that the energy ratios of approximation components with 187-hour periodicity decomposed from 7th level of wavelet transform were 94.71% (discharge), 99.00% (TOC concentration), and 93.84% (TOC load), respectively. In addition, the energy ratios of detail components showed the range between 1.00% and 6.17%, which were extremely small comparing to the energy ratios of approximation components, therefore, the first and second detail components might be considered as noise components included in the raw data.

Detection and Synthesis of Transition Parts of The Speech Signal

  • For the efficient coding and transmission, the speech signal can be classified into three distinctive classes: voiced, unvoiced, and transition classes. At low bit rate coding below 4 kbit/s, conventional sinusoidal transform coders synthesize speech of high quality for the purely voiced and unvoiced classes, whereas not for the transition class. The transition class including plosive sound and abrupt voiced-onset has the lack of periodicity, thus it is often classified and synthesized as the unvoiced class. In this paper, the efficient algorithm for the transition class detection is proposed, which demonstrates superior detection performance not only for clean speech but for noisy speech. For the detected transition frame, phase information is transmitted instead of magnitude information for speech synthesis. From the listening test, it was shown that the proposed algorithm produces better speech quality than the conventional one.

하구역 간석지 퇴적물 대자율의 통합과 주기성 검토 (Integration and Periodicity of Magnetic Susceptibility Data on Estuarine Tidal Sediment)

  • 모산만 하구역 간석지 12개 주상시료의 22개 OSL 연대 자료와 1039개 대자율 자료를 활용해 통합 시계열 대 자율 자료를 구축한 후 동아시아 지역을 중심으로 홀로세 중후반의 환경 변화와 대비하였다. 대자율의 변화는 강수량 변화와 유의미한 관련성이 있었으며, 웨이블릿 변환을 통하여 250년의 주기성을 확인할 수 있었다. 250년의 주기성은 태양활동도, 대기-해양순환과 관련된 ENSO의 장주기와 연관이 있는 것으로 파악되며, 동아시아 여름 몬순, 여름철 강수 패턴의 변화, 엘니뇨 현상 등을 통해 설명될 수 있다. 대기-해양순환과 관련되어 증가하게 되는 강수량으로 인해, 하천유역에서 다량의 퇴적물이 침식 운반되어 하구역 간석지에 퇴적되어 대자율의 값을 높이는 것으로 판단된다.

실시간 TOC 자료의 장.단기 성분의 검출을 위한 이산형 웨이블렛 변환의 적용 (Application of Discrete Wavelet Transform for Detection of Long- and Short-Term Components in Real-Time TOC Data)

  • Recently, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) which can be measured instantly can be used as an organic pollutant index instead of BOD or COD due to the diversity of pollutants and non-degradable problem. The primary purpose of the present study is to reveal the properties of time series data for TOC which have been measured by real-time monitoring in Juam Lake and, in particularly, to understand the long- and short-term characteristics with the extraction of the respective components based on the different return periods. For the purpose, we proposed Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) as the methodology. The results from the DWT showed that the different components according to the respective periodicities could be extracted from the time series data for TOC and the variation of each component with respect to time could emerge from the return periods and the respective energy ratios of the decomposed components against the raw data.

Wavelet Transform을 이용한 감조하천 수위자료의 유출성분 추출 (Extraction of Runoff Component from Stage in Tidal River Using Wavelet Transform)

  • 본 연구는 조석의 영향을 받는 하동2 지점의 수위자료로부터 시간과 주파수 영역에서 유연한 분해능을 갖는 웨이블렛 변환을 적용하여 강우에 의한 유출성분과 조석에 의한 조위성분을 추출하였다. 최종파형 분해단계의 근사성분은 가장 큰 에너지 값은 87.77%를 나타내었으며, 상세성분 중 반일주조형의 주기성(약 12시간)을 갖는 D3의 에너지 값은 10.70%로 나타났다. 또한 D3의 왜도 및 첨도 값은 여수 조위자료와 유사함을 보여주었다. 따라서 하동2 지점의 수위자료에 대하여 최종 분해된 최종파형 분해단계의 근사성분(A6)과 D6, D5 상세성분은 유출성분이며, 상세성분 D4, D3, D2는 조석의 영향으로 수위가 상승과 하강을 반복하는 조위성분인 것으로 나타났다.

Alternating Sunspot Area and Hilbert Transform Analysis

  • We investigate the sunspot area data spanning from solar cycles 1 (March 1755) to 23 (December 2010) in time domain. For this purpose, we employ the Hilbert transform analysis method, which is used in the field of information theory. One of the most important advantages of this method is that it enables the simultaneous study of associations between the amplitude and the phase in various timescales. In this pilot study, we adopt the alternating sunspot area as a function of time, known as Bracewell transformation. We first calculate the instantaneous amplitude and the instantaneous phase. As a result, we confirm a ~22-year periodic behavior in the instantaneous amplitude. We also find that a behavior of the instantaneous amplitude with longer periodicities than the ~22-year periodicity can also be seen, though it is not as straightforward as the obvious ~22-year periodic behavior revealed by the method currently proposed. In addition to these, we note that the phase difference apparently correlates with the instantaneous amplitude. On the other hand, however, we cannot see any obvious association of the instantaneous frequency and the instantaneous amplitude. We conclude by briefly discussing the current status of development of an algorithm for the solar activity forecast based on the method presented, as this work is a part of that larger project.

Measurement and Interpretation of Time Variations of Particulate Matter Observed in the Busan Coastal Area in Korea

  • In order to investigate the effects of local and synoptic meteorological conditions on urban scale particulate air pollutants observed over the Busan coastal area, power spectrum analysis was applied to observed particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter $\leq10\;{\mu}m$ ($PM_{10}$) for the period from 1 October, 1993 to 31 December, 2004. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis was used to obtain the hourly mean observed $PM_{10}$ concentrations to identify different periodicity scales of $PM_{10}$ concentrations. The results showed that, aside from the typical and well-known periodicities such as diurnal and annual variations caused by anthropogenic influences, three other significant power spectral density peaks were identified: 7-day, 21-day and 2.25-year periodicities. Cospectrum analysis indicated that the seven-day variations were closely related to the synoptic meteorological conditions such as weak wind speed, which are relevant to the stagnant high pressure system slowly passing through the Korean Peninsula. The intra-seasonal 21-day variation was negatively correlated with wind speed but was consistently positively correlated with relative humidity, which is related to aerosol formation that can be achieved as a result of the hygroscopic characteristics of aerosols. However, the quasibiennial 2.25-year variation was correlated with the frequency of Asian dust occurrence, the periodicities of which have been recorded inter-annually over the Korean Peninsula.

배전선로 고장인지 방식에 관한 연구 (A Study on Improving of Fault Recognition Method in Distribution Line)

  • The aim of this study is to improve the fault decision ability of FRTU (Feeder remote terminal unit) in DAS (Distribution automation system). FRTU uses the FI (Fault indicator) algorithm based on fault current pickup and operation of the protection device. Even if the inrush current flows or the protection device is sensitive to the transient current, FRTU may indicate incorrect fault information. To address these problems, we propose an improved fault recognition algorithm that can be applied to FRTU. We will detect a specific wave that is indicative of a fault, and use this information to identify a fault wave. The specific wave-detection algorithm is based on the duration and periodicity of the voltage, current, and harmonic variations. In addition, we propose fault recognition algorithms using voltage factor variation analysis and DWT (Discrete wavelet transform). All the wave data used in this study were actual data stored in FRTU.

  • The authors investigated anomalous nanoporous structures of aluminum oxides during the Al anodization process. We implemented two-steps anodizing process for the electrolyte of oxalic acid. As increasing DC voltages, lattice constants are proportionally increased. For the curved surface, the surface electric field was distorted so that the nanoporous pipe channel changed to a cone-type shape. We confirmed the periodicity by using the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis.

Drought over Seoul and Its Association with Solar Cycles

  • We have investigated drought periodicities occurred in Seoul to find out any indication of relationship between drought in Korea and solar activities. It is motivated, in view of solar-terrestrial connection, to search for an example of extreme weather condition controlled by solar activity. The periodicity of drought in Seoul has been re-examined using the wavelet transform technique as the consensus is not achieved yet. The reason we have chosen Seoul is because daily precipitation was recorded for longer than 200 years, which meets our requirement that analyses of drought frequency demand long-term historical data to ensure reliable estimates. We have examined three types of time series of the Effective Drought Index (EDI). We have directly analyzed EDI time series in the first place. And we have constructed and analyzed time series of histogram in which the number of days whose EDI is less than -1.5 for a given month of the year is given as a function of time, and one in which the number of occasions where EDI values of three consecutive days are all less than -1.5 is given as a function of time. All the time series data sets we analyzed are periodic. Apart from the annual cycle due to seasonal variations, periodicities shorter than the 11 year sunspot cycle, ~ 3, ~ 4, ~ 6 years, have been confirmed. Periodicities to which theses short periodicities (shorter than Hale period) may be corresponding are not yet known. Longer periodicities possibly related to Gleissberg cycles, ~ 55, ~ 120 years, can be also seen. However, periodicity comparable to the 11 year solar cycle seems absent in both EDI and the constructed data sets.
