Nuclear regulation requires a periodic visual test for inside structures of reactor to guarantee safe operation of nuclear power plant. However, existing visual test, which is proceeded manually, needs lots of time and labor. Even more, test workers should be exposed in radioactive environment during the test. An underwater robot system has being studied for more efficient and safer test. The position and pose estimation are important issue for the movement control of the robot. An algorithm was presented in this paper, which estimate the location and pose of the underwater robot clearly using vision system.
Realizations of multirate converters are proposed using periodically time-varying (PTV) structures. By exploiting the computational redundancy of the filtering operation in a multirate filter, it is possible to implement the filter with much less hardware. In the proposed implementations, several coefficients time-share in a periodic fashion the hardware of one multiply-and-add. Therefore, each multiply-and-add circuit performs different coefficient scalings at different time instants within a period. Compared to the direct form realization, the proposed realizations reduce the hardware of an interpolator and a decimator by a factor of approximately U and M, respectively, while retaining the same processing speed, where U and M are the upsampling and downsampling factors, respectively. The approach can be used to obtain realizations for sampling rate conversion by a rational factor of U/M, where U and M are relatively prime, in which case hardware reduction by a factor of approximately UM can be achieved.
Integrated-optic polarization controlling devices such as polarizers, polarization splitters, and polarization converters, are proposed and demonstrated in nonlinear optic polymers. Poling-induced birefringence in electro-optic polymers is exploited to fabricate the devices. The polymeric waveguide polarizers show low excess losses, and extinction ratios of 20.7 dB and 17.1 dB for TM-pass and TE-pass polarizers, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization splitters exhibit TE-TM mode splittings with crosstalk of 14.2 dB and 10.1 dB for TM and TE mode splittings, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization converters show successful TE/TM polarization mode conversion with conversion efficiencies of higher than 30 dB. The device employs poling-induced waveguides which have slowly rotating azimuth angle of optic axis along the light propagation direction. The novel polarization converter is insensitive to wavelength and easier to fabricate than the other polarization converters containing periodic structures.
In this paper, a methodology for the estimation of masonry elasticity and shear moduli is presented, for linear elasticity considerations. The methodology is based on the assumption that for a "periodic" masonry wall, which is formed by the repetition of a basic unit containing blocks and mortar, the mechanical characteristics of the unit are representative of the characteristics of the entire wall. For their calculation, the finite element analysis method is used. A micro-model with finite elements simulating separately the blocks and the mortar is developed. An equivalent finite element model, using an homogenous material is also developed and assuming equivalence of strains for the two models, the homogenous material properties are estimated. The efficiency of the method and its applicability limits are investigated.

A modeling method for the modal and the transient vibration analysis of a multi-packet blade system excited by nozzle jet forces is presented in this paper. Blades are idealized as cantilever beams and the elastic structures like disc and shroud connecting blades are modeled as coupling stiffnesses. A modified Campbell diagram is proposed to identify true resonance frequencies of the multi-packet blade system. Different from the SAFE diagram that employs three dimensional space, the modified Campbell diagram Proposed in this study employs a plane to find the true resonance frequencies. To verify the existence of true resonance frequencies, nozzle jet forces are modeled as periodic forces and transient vibration analysis were performed with the modeling method.
This paper presents a technique for estimating distribution of data stored in a database. This technique is very useful for accurate selectivity estimation, which is essential in query optimization and physical database design. To maintain data distribution, we employ the directory of the multilevel grid file, a multidimensional dynamic file organization. The major advantage of our technique is that data distribution information is maintained dynamically in the multilevel grid file. In contrast, other static methods such as the histogram method use static date structures, which requires periodic restructuring. Furthermore, we propose a method for keeping the abstract information of data distribution in main memory. This is advantageous in the situation where the size of main memory is not sufficient. Finally, We also suggest formulas for calculating selectivies of various queries based on our data distribution information.

To investigate the generation mechanism of the shock-associated noise, an underexpanded supersonic jet from an axisymmetic nozzle is simulated under the conditions of the Nozzle exit Mach number of 2 and the exit pressure ratio of Pe/Pe =1.5. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO (Essentially Non-Oscillatory) scheme to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. It was found that the shock-associated noise is generated by the weak interaction between the downstream propagating large turbulence structures of the jet flow and the quasi-periodic shock cell structure during the one is passing through the other. The directivity of propagating waves to the upstream is clearly shown in the visualization of pressure field. It is shown that the present calculation of the centerline pressure distribution is in fare agreement with the experimental data at the location of first shock cell.

Large-sized flat-panel displays are widely used for PC monitors and TV displays. In this paper, frequency domain pre-filter algorithms are presented for detection of defects in large-sized Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display(TFT-LCD) panel surfaces. Frequency analysis with 1-D, 2-D FFT methods for extract the periodic patterns of lattice structures in TFT-LCD is performed. To remove this patterns, frequency domain band-stop filters were used for eliminating specific frequency components. In order to acquire only defected images, 2-D inverse FFT methods to inverse transform of frequency domain images were used.

When the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident occurred in March, a hydrogen explosion in the reactor building at the 4th unit of Fukushima plants lead to a big surprise because the full core of the unit 4 reactor had been moved and stored underwater at the spent nuclear fuel storage pool for periodic maintenance. It was because the potential criticality in the fuel storage pool by coolant loss may yield more severe situation than the similar accident happened inside the reactor vessel. In the paper, the safety state of the spent fuel storage pool and rack structures of the domestic nuclear plants would be reviewed and compared with the Fukushima plant case by engineering viewpoint of potential severe accidents.

A direct numerical simulation (DNS) code suitable for the prediction of buoyant jet diffusion flames was developed in this study. The thermodynamic and transport properties were evaluated using CHEMKIN package to enhance the prediction performance of the developed DNS code. A two dimensional simulations were performed for the jet diffusion flames in normal and zero-gravity conditions where the Froude numbers are 5 and infinity, respectively. The simulated buoyant jet diffusion flame in normal gravity showed that the unsteady and dynamic motion although the reynolds number is low (400). It was identified that the flame in normal gravity flickered periodically. The periodic motion of the flame disappeared in zero-gravity condition. The dynamic motion of the buoyant jet diffusion flame could be well understood by comparing the flame structures obtained by the simulations of normal and zero-gravity conditions.
