  • Normally, coating is used for protecting reinforced concrete. For this purpose, both organic and inorganic coatings are used. The advantages of inorganic coatings are lower absorption of UV, non-burning etc. On the other hand, organic coatings have the advantage of low permeability of $CO_2, SO_2$ and water. Organic coatings provide better protection for reinforced concrete. However, organic coatings such as epoxy, urethane and acryl reduce long-term adhesive strength by the difference of their thermal expansion coefficients and elastic modules from those of concrete, and the formed coating cover of these is blistered by poor breathing. Also, when organic coatings are applied to the wet surface of concrete, they have a problem with adhesion. In this study, a new coating material for protecting concrete was hybridized with polymer and ceramics. And tests were carried out on its physical and durable characteristics, and safety characteristic on elution. All results were compared with organic coating materials and epoxies and showed that the performance of the developed coating material was not inferior to that of other organic coatings in protecting concrete. On the other hand, safety characteristic on elution was superior to epoxies which were used in this study. So, the developed coating material was considered as a suitable protecting coating material which have advantages of inorganic and organic coatings for protecting underground concrete structures, especially in contact with water.

  • This study is to predict the life exponent by measuring, over 7 years, the insulation resistance of high-voltage cables in 22 kV operation for 13 years. We found out the lifetime index in order to determine the time-dependent trend of deteriorating performance of power cables. The insulation resistances decreased according to elapsed time. We found that: the initial measurements of the cable systems were in agreement with the deterioration properties of the Arrhenius Law. By analyzing the life curve of the cable system, we also verified that the value of the life exponent (n) in the v-t characteristics defined by Weibull distribution has values from 10 to 11. When designing the cable system, the initial value of life exponent was chosen as 9 without any grounding. We have verified that the theoretical grounding based on the design safety of n=9 was actually the best one available. In the short term, we apply our research result to the diagnosis and evaluation of the power cables. In the long run, however, we plan to reduce the cost of the installation and management of cable systems in operation at power stations.

  • Aging and severe environments are major causes of damage in reinforced concrete (RC) structures such as buildings and bridges. Deterioration such as concrete cracks, corrosion of steel, and deformation of structural members can significantly degrade the structural performance and safety. Therefore, effective and easy-to-use methods are desired for repairing and strengthening such concrete structures. Various methods for strengthening and rehabilitation of RC structures have been developed in the past several decades. Recently, FRP composite materials have emerged as a cost-effective alternative to the conventional materials for repairing, strengthening, and retrofitting deteriorating/deficient concrete structures, by externally bonding FRP laminates to concrete structural members. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in predicting behavior of circular type concrete column retrofitted with FRP. To construct training and testing dataset, experiment results for the specimens which have different retrofit profile are used. Retrofit ratio, strength of existing concrete, thickness, number of layer, stiffness, ultimate strength of fiber and size of specimens are selected as input parameters to predict strength, strain, and stiffness of post-yielding modulus. These proposed ANFIS models show reliable increased accuracy in predicting constitutive properties of concrete retrofitted by FRP, compared to the constitutive models suggested by other researchers.

  • Material parameters such as surface chloride content, water permeability coefficient, chloride diffusivity and critical chloride content are a substantial key parameter for understanding the durability performance of concrete and its micro-structural densification. Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies on the durability design for marine concrete structures have been carried out. However, the results are different to each other. In order to establish a consistent durability design system of concrete, it is a precondition to define material parameters, which affect deterioration of concrete due to chloride penetration. Such parameters are surface chloride content, chloride diffusivity, and critical chloride content. Usually these parameters are assumed as temporary constant values or obtained from the experimental results for short term. However, it is necessary to define these parameters reasonably, because these significantly influence the calculation of service life of concrete. In this paper, it is introduced to define material parameters of concrete for chloride diffusion, such as surface chloride content $[Cl]_s$, water permeability coefficient K, chloride diffusivity $D_{Cl}$, critical chloride content $[Cl]_{cr}$. These are expressed as time function considering hydration evolution of hardened cement paste. The definition of the material parameters is a prerequisite to simulate chloride penetration into concrete as time elapsed.

  • The amount of packets in palyout buffer of video streaming receiver can be changed by network condition, and saturated and exhausted by the delay and jitter. Especially, if the amount of incoming video traffic exceeds the maximum allowed playout buffer, buffer overflow problem can be generated. It makes the deterioration of video image and the discontinuity of playout by skip phenomenon. Also, if the incoming packets are delayed by network confusion, the stop phenomenon of video image is made by buffering due to buffer underflow problem. To solve these problems, this paper proposes the video streaming receiver with token bucket scheme which automatically establishes the important parameters like token generation rate r and bucket maximum capacity c adapting to the pattern of video packets. The simulation results using network simulator-2 (NS-2) and joint scalable video model (JSVM) show that the proposed token bucket scheme with automatic establishment parameter provides better performance than the existing token bucket scheme with manual establishment parameter in terms of the generation number of overflow and underflow, packer loss rate, and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) in three test video sequences.

  • Recently, application case of the ultra rapid hardening concrete-polymer composite(URHCPC) are increasing to repair for the deterioration of pavement. But it is a major disadvantage that the main material is expensive and has environmental load. For these reasons, the development of the economic, eco-friendly materials is needed. Calcium Aluminate Composite (CAC), produced by rapid cooling of atomizing method with molten ladle furnace slag, is a material capable of improving the economic feasibility and reducing the environmental load of URHCPC. In this paper, the properties of CAC and gypsum mixed CAC (GC) as alternative materials of RSC according to the types of polymer dispersion were studied. The results were as follows; compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, bonding strength and modulus of elasticity of the composites using CAC or GC showed higher values than those of plain proportion in 3 hour. In later age, they were at the same level as the general proportions. URHCPC using BPD as polymer dispersion had superior strength properties generally. But modulus of elasticity was the same level as the case of using a SBR latex. According to these results, CAC or GC can partially substituted for RSC to product the URHCPC. When URHCPC uses the BPD as the polymer dispersion, it can be improved performance.

  • Optimal operating conditions of on-farm red pepper dryer were searched by using the simulation-optimization algorithm combining the drying and quality deterioration models of red pepper with Box's complex method. Determination of control variables such as air temperature, air recycle ratio and air flow rate was based on a criterion of minimizing energy consumption under the constrainst conditions that satisfied the specified color retention of carotenoids. As quality constraint was stricter, energy consumption increased and total drying time decreased with lower recycle ratio and higher air flow rate Product mixing during drying was found to be able to improve the energy efficiency and product quality. Currently used air flow rate was assessed to be increased for the optimal operation. Two stage drying at the fixed optimal air flow rate was proven to be useful means for further saying of energy consumption. In the optimal bistaged drying, the second stage began at about one third of the total drying time and low air temperature in the first stage Increased to a high value and air recycle ratio increased slightly in the second stage. Optimal control variable scheme could be explained by the dryer performance and the carotenoids destruction kinetics in red pepper drying.

  • To fundamentally solve the problem of deterioration of concrete structures, it has been researched that the high durable concrete structure reinforced with the FRP rebar can be one of major solution to the newly-developed concrete structure. FRP rebar has lots of advantages such as non-corrosive, high performance and light weight against the conventional steel rebar. Among these kinds of FRP rebars, GFRP rebar has usually been considered as the best reinforcement because of its economic point of view. Even though the material capacity of the GFRP rebar was already investigated, there are some problems such as low modulus of elastic that will be cause for degrade of the serviceability of flexural concrete member reinforced with the GFRP rebar. Thus, the deflection characteristics of the GFRP rebar reinforced concrete structure should be considered then investigated. In this study, ACI 440 guideline (2003), ISIS Canada Design Manual (2001) and Toutanji et al. (2000) was considered for predicting the moment of inertia of the concrete beam reinforced with the GFRP rebar. And it was also evaluated that load-deflection relationship had a good accordance with the test and analysis result. In the result of this study, it could be estimated that the load-deflection relationship using the suggested equation of moment of inertia in this study indicated better accordance with the test result than that of the others until failure.

  • Recently, much attention has focused on the study of eco-friendly concrete using recycled by-products for protecting marine ecosystem and durability of concrete exposed to marine condition. This study evaluated the durabilities of 4 different type of concrete mixtures(Control, Marine, Porous, New slag) with the seawater resistance by marine environment exposure experiment and freeze-thaw resistance, resistance to chloride ion penetration considering severe deterioration environment. In this study, we conducted seawater resistance using compressive strength according to the age(7/28/56 days) of specimen and curing conditions(standard(fresh water), tidal, immersion, artificial seawater). The results show that compressive strength of concrete exposed to marine environment exposure condition was lower than those of the standard curing condition. Also, compressive strength of New slag using eco-friendly materials for protecting marine ecosystem was lower than those of other concretes, there is need to improve the performance of New slag. The results for freeze-thaw resistance showed that all mixtures have excellent, but the Porous and New slag were lower than others. Also, the more improved resistance to chloride ion penetration than those of the Marine was measured in the New slag regardless of curing condition.
