Experimental capacity of perforated cold-formed steel open sections under compression and bending

  • This study evaluates the reliability of present European codes in predicting the collapse load of columns made with perforated cold-formed steel (CFS) profiles under combined axial load and bending. To this aim, a series of experimental tests on slender open-section specimens have been performed at varying load eccentricity. Preliminarily, stub column tests have also been performed to calculate the effective section properties of the investigated profile. By comparison of experimental data with code-specified M-N strength domains, the authors demonstrate that present code formulations may underestimate the collapse load of thin-walled perforated open sections. The study is the first step of a wider experimental and numerical study aimed at better describing strength domains of perforated CFS open sections.

Experimental Study of Flow Fields around a Perforated Breakwater

  • This study investigates flow fields and energy dissipation due to regular wave interaction with a perforated vertical breakwater, through velocity data measurement in a two-dimensional wave tank. As the waves propagate through the perforated breakwater, the incoming wave energy is reflected back to the ocean, dissipated due to very turbulent flows near the perforations and inside the chamber, and transmitted through the perforations of the breakwater. This transmitted energy is further reduced due to the presence of the perforated back wall. Hence most of the energy is either reflected or dissipated in the vicinity of the structure, and only a small amount of the incoming wave energy is transmitted through the structure. In this study, particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to measure two-dimensional instantaneous velocity fields in the vicinity of the structure. Measured velocity data was treated statistically, and used to calculate mean flow fields, turbulence intensity and turbulent kinetic energy. For investigation of the flow pattern, time-averaged mean velocity fields were examined, and discussed using the cross-sections through slot and wall for comparison. Flow fields were obtained and compared for various cases with different regular wave conditions. In addition, turbulent kinetic energy was estimated as an approach to understand energy dissipation near the perforated breakwater. The turbulent kinetic energy was distributed against wave height and wave period to see the dependence on wave conditions.

Compression tests of cold-formed channel sections with perforations in the web

  • This paper describes a series of compression tests performed on cold-formed steel channel sections with perforations in the web (thermal studs) fabricated from a galvanized steel plate whose thickness ranged from 1.0 mm to 1.6 mm and nominal yield stress was 295 MPa. The structural behavior and performance of thermal studs undergoing local, distortional, or flexural-torsional buckling were investigated experimentally and analytically. The compression tests indicate that the slits in the web had significant negative effects on the buckling and ultimate strength of thin-walled channel section columns. The compressive strength of perforated thermal studs was estimated using equivalent solid channel sections of reduced thickness instead of the studs. The direct strength method, a newly developed and adopted alternative to the effective width method for designing cold-formed steel sections in the AISI Standard S100 (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (Standard Australia 2005), was calibrated to the test results for its application to cold-formed channel sections with slits in the web. The results verify that the DSM can predict the ultimate strength of channel section columns with slits in the web by substituting equivalent solid sections of reduced thickness for them.

Design of steel and composite beams with web openings - Verification using finite element method

  • This paper presents the findings of a design development project for perforated beams fully integrated with building services. A unified design approach for both steel and composite beams with large rectangular web openings is proposed which is based on plastic design methods and formulated in accordance with analytical structural design principles. Moreover, finite element models are established after careful calibration against test data, and comparison on the predicted ultimate loads of two composite beams with rectangular web openings from the finite element models and the proposed design method is also presented. It is demonstrated that the proposed design method is able to predict the ultimate loads of composite beams with rectangular web openings against 'Vierendeel' mechanism satisfactorily.

Evaluation of cyclic fracture in perforated beams using micromechanical fatigue model

  • It is common practice to use Reduced Web Beam Sections (RWBS) in steel moment resisting frames. Perforation of beam web in these members may cause stress and strain concentration around the opening area and facilitate ductile fracture under cyclic loading. This paper presents a numerical study on the cyclic fracture of these structural components. The considered connections are configured as T-shaped assemblies with beams of elongated circular perforations. The failure of specimens under Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue (ULCF) condition is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is a micromechanics based fracture model. In each model, CVGM fracture index is calculated based on the stress and strain time histories and then models with different opening configurations are compared based on the calculated fracture index. In addition to the global models, sub-models with refined mesh are used to evaluate fracture index around the beam to column weldment. Modeling techniques are validated using data from previous experiments. Results show that as the perforation size increases, opening corners experience greater fracture index. This is while as the opening size increases the maximum observed fracture index at the connection welds decreases. However, the initiation of fracture at connection welds occurs at lower drift angles compared to opening corners. Finally, a probabilistic framework is applied to CVGM in order to account for the uncertainties existing in the prediction of ductile fracture and results are discussed.

수평 배수재로서 순환골재와 쇄석의 활용 방안 (Utilization of Recycled Aggregates and Crushed Stone as Horizontal Drains in Soft Ground)

  • In this study, laboratory model test on utilization of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as horizontal drains to use alternative material of sand in soft ground is practiced. The coefficient of permeability of the recycled aggregates and crushed stone showed largely 1.2~5.1 times and 2.0~3.3 times greater than sand, respectively. The horizontal coefficient of permeability in case of installing the horizontal perforated drain pipe showed largely 1.9~6.8 times more than the case of not installing. The drainage distance showed 1.7~1.8 times greater than sand. When a degree of consolidation is 90 %, there is no delay of consolidation in SCP and PVD improvement sections. Therefore, it is proven that the field applicability is excellent. Also, the suitable quality management criterion is presented to make use of a horizontal drains in soft ground on the basis of analysis of the physical and environmental characteristics.

PDGF-BB와 IGF-I 혼합 투여가 비글견 인공 치근단 병소의 치유에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (THE EFFECT OF PDGF-BB AND IGF-I COMBINATION ON THE HEALING OF ARTIFICIAL PERIAPICAL LESIONS IN BEAGLE DOGS)

  • It is difficult to treat the endodontic apical perforation successfully. In this study, we hypothesized that the application of PDGF-BB and IGF-I into periapical perforation site may accelerate periapical healing and lead to bone deposition. And the specificity of osteonectin in periapical healing was investigated. The experiments were performed on the upper and lower 51 premolar teeth of 4 beagle dogs. The pulp chamber of each tooth was opened and the dental plaque was inserted into the canal for developing the periapical lesion for 5 weeks. Then, the roots were artificially perforated at the apex with the number 4 profile of .06 taper. In each step, standard periapical radiographs were taken to compare the size of lesion each other. The radiographs were scanned and analyzed by image analysis system. The mean and standard deviation of periradicular radiolucency ratios were calculated in each group. ANOVA was used for comparison. 51 premolars were grouped into 3 groups; control group, calcium hydroxide-treated group and calcium hydroxide plus growth factors-treated group. In the control group, the apical perforations were not sealed and obturated with gutta-percha and ZOE sealer by lateral condensation technique. In the experimental groups, the apical perforation were sealed with calcium hydroxide and with/without $4{\mu}g$ of PDGF-BB & IGF-I in cellulose gel and obturated by lateral condensation technique. Fluorescent bone markers were used to measure new bone formation. Following 2, 4, 12 weeks after experiment the dogs were sacrificed and histologic sections were prepared. Each tooth block including periapical lesion was sectioned mesiodistally. One half of the sections were decalcified with 6% nitric acid and processed by standard paraffin embedding technique. The sections were stained by hematoxylin and eosin, and immunostained for osteonectin. Histomorphometrical measurement of neoformed bone was performed using a light microscope. And the other half of the sections were prepared by undecalcified preparation, and confocal laser scanning microscopic investigations were done.

Tricalcium phosphate와 Vitapex가 치근단 조직에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구 (THE EFFECT OF THE TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE AND VITAPEX ON THE DOGS' PERIAPICAL TISSUES)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of tricalcium phosphate and Vitapex on the dogs' periapical tissues. Twenty mandibular premolars from 5 healthy dogs were used for this study. After the animals were anesthetized intramuscularly, pulp chambers were open and pulp tissue was extirpated with a barbed broach and H-file. Then the working length of the root canal was measured with H-file and pulp tissue was completely removed. Before the actual canal filling, the root canals of twenty teeth have been experimentally infected with opening the pulp chamber for 5 weeks. Periapical radiographs of the experimental teeth were taken to monitor the periapical pathological condition. Each root apex of 20 premolars was perforated with engine reamer and the root canals were enlarged with No. 30-60 H-files. They were divided into treated as follows. Control group: The root canal was filled with gutta-percha. Experimental group 1: The canal was dried with sterile paper points and mixture of tricalcium phosphate and physiological saline was overfilled beyond the root apex with a lentulo spiral. Then the root canal was filled gutta-percha and lateral condensation and the pulp chamber was filled with Caviton. Experimental group 2: The root canals were overfilled with Vitapex and were treated in the same manner as those in experimental group 1 At 1,2,3, and 8 weeks after experiment, the periapical tissues including the alveolar bone were fixed with 10% formalin solution for I week and decalcified with Plank-Rycho solution for 5 weeks. The specimens were embedded in paraffin and serial sections were cut into a thickness of 6 ${\mu}m$ at the plane of the root apex. Hematoxyline-eosin and Masson's trichrome stain were made for the histo-pathological examinations. The results were as follows: 1. Ingrowth of collagen fiber was observed from 1 week in control group and experimental groups. 2. The rate of bone formation of experimental group 1 was accelerated more than that of experimental group 2. 3. Resorption of cementum was seen in control group, but apposition of cementum was seen in experimental groups.

치근단 손상부의 치유에 영향을 미치는 제재에 관한 병리조직학적 연구 (HISTOPATHOLOGIC STUDY ON THE HEALING PROCESS OF APICAL WOUND IN APPLYING SEVERAL MATERIALS)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of several materials on the healing process of apical wound. Sixteen mandibular premolars obtained from 4 healthy dogs were used for this study. Under general anesthesia, the pulpal chamber of each tooth was opened and the pulps were extirpated. The root canals were then instrumented with H-file and irrigated with physiologic saline solution ; the apices were purposely perforated and enlarged with the engine K-reamer. In the experimental groups, apical wounds were filled with one of calcium hydroxide, hydroxylapatite, and tricalcium phosphate materials, mixture of each materials and physiologic saline solution, with a lentulo spiral. In the control group, apical wounds were not filled with any material. All the root canals were filled by the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha cone and ZOE sealer. The access opening of all the teeth were closed with amalgam. On the 10, 20, 40 and 60th day after experiment, experimental animals were sacrificed. Segments of jaws, each containing one tooth, were fixed in 10% formalin solution and decalcified in Plank-Rychlo solution. The specimens were embedded in paraffin and serially sectioned to an average thickness of $6{\mu}m$. The sections were stained by hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome stain method and examined under light microscope. The results were as follows : 1. In the experimental groups, the new bone formations were observed in apical wounds. 2. Fourty days later, apical wounds were healed by granulation tissue in the experimental groups, but were not healed by granulation tissue in the control group, and the healing process of experimental groups were more rapid than that of control group. 3. Sixty days later, chronic inflammation disappeared in the experimental groups, and the materials used showed biologic affinity to the periapical tissue. 4. In all the groups, the resorption of cementum appeared on the 10th and 20th day after experiment, and the deposition of cementum appeared on the 40th and 60th day after experiment, especially showing narrowness of apical foramen due to newly formed cementum in calcium hydroxide group. 5. Calcum hydroxide and tricalcium phosphate particles were gradually resolved, but hydroxylapatite particles were not resolved through the experimental period.

이마앞겉질을 제거시킨 흰쥐 앞뇌의 바닥핵무리에서 변성축삭종말의 미세구조연구 (Ultrastructure of Degenerating Axon Terminals in the Basal Forebrain Nuclei of the Rat following Prefrontal Decortication)

  • 중추신경계통에서도 최고중추인 이마앞겉질 (prefrontal cortex)은 거의 모든 대뇌겉질과 연결되어 있어서 대뇌겉질 각 부분에 저장된 감각, 운동, 언어... 등 모든 정보를 받을 뿐만 아니라, 앞뇌의 바닥핵들 (basal forebrain nuclei)을 비롯한 많은 신경핵들과도 연결되어 있어서 생체 내부환경과 본능에 관한 정보도 받아드린다. 이들 연결을 통해서 이마앞겉질은 변연계통의 본능, 감정, 기억, 학습기능과 줄무늬체계통의 적절한 표현, 대응, 절차기억, 운동조절기능들을 연계하고 조정한다. 앞뇌의 바닥핵들(꼬리핵 caudate nucleus, 줄무늬체바닥핵 fundus striati nucleus, 중격옆핵 accumbens septi nucleus, 중격핵 septal nucleus)도 역시 변연계통과 줄무늬체계통 사이에서 해부학적으로나 기능적으로도 교차기능이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 실험은 흰쥐의 이마앞겉질은 제거한 다음, 앞쪽 앞뇌의 바닥핵들에서 변성종말들이 있는지 여부와 그 미세구조를 관찰하려고 시행했다. $250{\sim}300g$된 흰쥐를 실험동물로 이용하였으며, 흰쥐들을 정상군, 대조군, 수술군으로 구분하였다. 수술군은 마취시킨 다음, 뇌수술장치에 고정시키고, 머리피부를 절개한 다음, 이마뼈에 구멍을 만들고, 이 구멍을 통해 이마앞겉질을 흡인하여 제거했다. 대조군은 이마뼈에 구멍을 만드는 과정까지만 실행하였고, 정상군은 아무조치도 취하지 않았다. 수술 후 2일 경과 후에 전자현미경 관찰을 위해 1% glutaraldehyde-1% paraldehyde 혼합액 (pH 7.4)에 1차 고정하였고, 뇌를 적출하여 고정액에 냉장시켰다가, 다음날 해당 신경핵을 적출하여 2차 고정액 (2% osmium tetroxide액)에 고정하였다. Araldite 혼합액에 포매하여 ultratome-V로 자른 절편은 4% uranyl acetate와 2.7% lead citrate로 염색하여 JEM 100CX-II 전자현미경으로 관찰하였다. 관찰결과 네 신경핵에서 모두 변성 축삭종말이 관찰되었는데, 출현비율은 상당한 차이를 보여서 가장 변성이 심한 신경핵은 꼬리핵 이었고, 다음은 줄무늬체바닥핵, 중격옆핵, 중격핵의 순서였다. 변성축삭종말이 각 부위에서 연접하는 모양을 비교한 결과 꼬리핵과 줄무늬체바닥핵에서는 모두 가지돌기가시(dendritic spine)에 연접하였으나, 중격옆핵과 중격핵에서는 가지돌기 (dendrite)에 연접하는 것과 가지돌기가시에 연접하는 것이 혼재하였다. 이들 두 신경핵 무리는 이마앞겉질에서 기원하는 축삭종말의 연접차이로 볼 때 서로 다른 회로계통에 속할 것으로 생각되며, 문헌고찰을 통해서 꼬리핵과 줄무늬체바닥핵은 줄무늬체회로 (striatal circuit)에 속하고 중격옆핵과 중격핵은 변연계통회로(limbic circuit)에 속할 것으로 판정했다. 이마앞겉질은 생리적, 약리적, 신경학적 및 형태학적 근거들로 보아 바닥핵들을 통해 변연계통과 대뇌겉질 전체에 영향을 미칠 것으로 여겨지는데, 본 실험에서는 네 종류의 바닥핵들, 즉 꼬리핵, 줄무늬체바닥핵, 중격옆핵 및 중격핵과 관련된 신경연접들을 관찰하였으며, 그 결과를 문헌 고찰한 결과 변연계통과 줄무늬체계통이 앞뇌의 바닥에 있는 신경핵들에서 형태학적 교차연결을 통해 정서와 마음의 상태를 행동과 대응으로 표현하는 중요한 신경회로가 존재함을 제안하였다.
