Teaching Pronunciation Using Sound Visualization Technology to EFL Learners

  • When English language teachers are deciding on their priorities for teaching pronunciation, it is imperative to know what kind of differences and errors are most likely to interfere with communication, and what special problems particular first-language speakers will have with English pronunciation. In other words, phoneme discrimination skill is an integral part of speech processing for the EFL learners' learning to converse in English. Training using sound visualization technique can be effective in improving second language learners' perceptions and productions of segmental and suprasegmental speech contrasts. This study assessed the efficacy of a pronunciation training that provided visual feedback for EFL learners acquiring pitch and durational contrasts to produce and perceive English phonemic distinctions. The subjects' ability to produce and to perceive novel English words was tested in two contexts before and after training; words in isolation and words in sentences. In comparison with an untrained control group, trainees showed improved perceptual and productive performance, transferred their knowledge to new contexts, and maintained their improvement three months after training. These findings support the feasibility of learner-centered programs using sound visualization technique for English language pronunciation instruction.

전자오락경험과 아동의 자기통제력 및 시각정보처리능력 (Video Game Experience and Children's Abilities of Self-Control and Visual Information Processing)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate children's abilities of self-control and visual information processing based on their experience with video games. Participants, divided by prior exposure to video games, were 44 seven-year-old and 48 eleven-year-old boys. The impulsive tendency of children was measured through the MFFT and The delayed satisfaction test. Visual information processing ability was assessed through perceptual speed, mental rotation, and spatial visualization tasks. No differences were found between more-and less-video-game-experienced boys. Significant differences, however, were found in visual information processing abilities. More experienced boys performed better in mental rotation and spatial visualization tasks than less experienced boys.

Associative Interactive play Contents for Infant Imagination

  • Creative thinking appears even before it is expressed in language, and its existence is revealed through emotion, intuition, image and body feeling before logic or linguistics rules work. In this study, Lego is intended to present experimental child interactive content that is applied with a computer vision based on image processing techniques. In the case of infants, the main purpose of this content is the development of hand muscles and the ability to implement imagination. The purpose of the analysis algorithm of the OpenCV library and the image processing using the 'VVVV' that is implemented as a 'Node' in the midst of perceptual changes in image processing technology that are representative of object recognition, and the objective is to use a webcam to film, recognize, derive results that match the analysis and produce interactive content that is completed by the user participating. Research shows what Lego children have made, and children can create things themselves and develop creativity. Furthermore, we expect to be able to infer a diverse and individualistic person's thinking based on more data.

편측 뇌손상 환자에서 시각적 정보에 의한 운동 순서의 내잠 학습에 대한 분석 (Implicit Motor Sequence Learning During Serial Reaction Time Tasks Induced by Visual Feedback in Patients With Stroke)

  • Theoretical framework of motor learning is used to enhance perceptual motor skill in physical therapy intervention, which can be subdivided into two main types-explicit and implicit. The purpose of this study was to examine whether stroke patients with unilateral brain damage learn implicitly a motor skill using the arm ipsilateral to the damaged hemisphere. Speculation then followed as to the formation of therapeutic plans and instructions provided to patients with stroke. 20 patients with stroke and 20 normal participants were recruited. All the subjects practiced serial reaction time tasks for 30 minutes a day and retention tests on the following day. The tasks and tests involved pressing the corresponding buttons to 4 colored circles presented on a computer screen as quickly and accurately as possible. Patients with stroke responded more slowly than controls. However, both groups showed decreased reaction time in the experimental and retention periods. Also, there was no significant difference between both groups regarding explicit knowledge of consecutive order. Therefore, patients with stoke had the ability to learn implicitly a perceptual motor skill. Prescriptive instruction using implicit and explicit feedback may be beneficial for motor skill learning in physical therapy intervention for patients with brain damage.

기하 교구의 활용이 공간 지각 능력에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Using the Geometric Manipulative for the Development of Spatial Sense)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 기하학습 교구인 조립 교구인 4D Frame 활용 학습이 초등학생들의 공간 지각 능력 신장에 미치는 영향을 분석함으로써 수학 교수 학습 방법의 개선에 도움을 주기 위한 것이다. 서울시내 5학년 2개 반을 임의로 선정하여 한 학급은 기하 교구를 활용한 수업을 실시하는 실험 집단(31명)으로, 한 학급은 일반 수학 수업을 실시하는 비교 집단(32명)으로 선정하여 한 달간 10차시의 수업을 실시하였다. 본 연구에 사용한 실험 설계는 준 실험 설계(Qusai-Experimental-Design) 중 이질 통제 집단 전후 검사 설계(Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design)를 적용하였다. 실시한 검사 도구는 공간 감각 검사로 사전 사후 모두 동형 검사지를 사용하였다. 또한 수업 관찰 분석과 학생들의 학습지에 대한 반응을 분석하였다. 연구의 결과 첫째, 기하 교구의 활용 학습은 공간 지각 능력 신장에 있어서 효과적이었다. 둘째, 기하 교구의 활용 학습은 공간 감각에 있어서 지각의 일관성과 공간 관계의 지각력 신장에 있어서 효과적이었다. 그리고 후속 연구로 동일 교구의 보다 광범위한 적용 및 다양한 교구의 개발을 제언하였다.

Image Quality Assessment by Combining Masking Texture and Perceptual Color Difference Model

  • Objective image quality assessment (IQA) models have been developed by effective features to imitate the characteristics of human visual system (HVS). Actually, HVS is extremely sensitive to color degradation and complex texture changes. In this paper, we firstly reveal that many existing full reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) methods can hardly measure the image quality with contrast and masking texture changes. To solve this problem, considering texture masking effect, we proposed a novel FR-IQA method, called Texture and Color Quality Index (TCQI). The proposed method considers both in the masking effect texture and color visual perceptual threshold, which adopts three kinds of features to reflect masking texture, color difference and structural information. Furthermore, random forest (RF) is used to address the drawbacks of existing pooling technologies. Compared with other traditional learning-based tools (support vector regression and neural network), RF can achieve the better prediction performance. Experiments conducted on five large-scale databases demonstrate that our approach is highly consistent with subjective perception, outperforms twelve the state-of-the-art IQA models in terms of prediction accuracy and keeps a moderate computational complexity. The cross database validation also validates our approach achieves the ability to maintain high robustness.

인터넷 구강건강정보 이용에 대한 환자와 치과위생사의 인식비교 (Perceptual differences in internet oral health information use between dental hygienists and patients)

  • Objectives: To analyze whether there are perceptual differences in internet oral health information use between ordinary people who underwent dental treatments and dental hygienists. Second, the study aimed to analyze related issues, and, third, to find a developmental direction to provide fundamental information for developing patient-customized websites to improve dental services to suit contemporary needs. Methods: From September 1 to September 30, 2018, a questionnaire survey was conducted, with 367 participants (209 dental hygienists and 149 patients) in order to analyze their objective agreement, subjective congruence, and accuracy. As a study tool, the questionnaire consisted of 11 items about the perception of internet oral health information use and 11 on the estimated perceptions of both groups in order to compare their perceptions and estimates of each other. Results: Objective agreement was analyzed and, as a result, dental hygienists and patients were found to demonstrate similar results in terms of their perceptions of internet oral health information use. With regard to subjective agreement, the study subjects either underestimated or overestimated internet oral health information use more than they perceived. In terms of accuracy, dental hygienists and patients had different perceptions regarding internet oral health information use. Therefore, accuracy was somewhat low. Conclusions: In order to improve individuals' self-care ability and increase therapeutic instructional adherence for oral healthcare, it is necessary to apply internet oral health information properly to each patient's individual oral state.

사회공포증 수준의 증가에 따라 나타난 정서지각 편향성과 시공간 주의배분능력 저하 간의 관련성 연구 (Research on the Association Between Emotional Perception Bias and Deteriorated Visuospatial Attention Allocation Ability in Increasing the Level of Social Phobia)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 사회공포증 수준에 따른 정서지각 편향성의 변화와 이 변화에 기여하는 시공간 주의배분능력에 대해 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 본 연구에서는 사회공포증 수준을 측정하기 위해 한국형 자기보고식 설문 검사인 사회공포증 검사(Korean version of social avoidance and distress, K-SAD)를 사용하였으며, 정서지각 편향성과 시공간 주의배분능력을 측정하기 위해 정서지각 과제(emotional perception task)와 UFOV 과제(useful field of view task)를 사용하였다. 본 연구에는 118명의 연구참가자가 참여하였고 응답을 성실하게 하지 않은 연구참가자들을 제외하여 107명(남: 94명, 여: 13명)의 자료가 분석되었다. 연구참가자들은 K-SAD 점수에 따라 세 집단으로 나뉘어졌다. 연구 결과, 정서지각과제에서 긍정적 정서지각 편향성은 사회공포증 수준이 높을수록 더 크게 나타났으며 UFOV 과제에서는 사회공포증 수준이 높을수록 저하된 시공간 주의배분능력이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 사회공포증 수준의 증가에 따라 나타나는 저하된 시공간 주의배분능력이 긍정적 정서지각 편향성에 부분적으로 기여할 가능성이 있다는 것을 시사한다.

시각기능 개선을 위한 시기능훈련이 시지각에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Visual Perception by Vision Therapy for Improvement of Visual Function)

  • 목적: 시각이상을 가진 아동을 대상으로 시기능훈련을 통한 시각기능이상의 개선 전후 시지각점수의 변화를 살펴보고 시지각에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 한다. 방법: 시각기능이상을 가진 13세 미만($8.75{\pm}1.66$)의 아동 23명을 대상으로 시기능훈련 전후에 시지각기능검사(TVPS_R; test of visual perceptual skills-revised)를 실시하여 시기능훈련에 따른 시각기능의 변화와 시지각 평가점수의 변화를 분석하였다. 결과: 시기능훈련을 통해서 원거리 PRC(positive relative convergence) 분리점은 평균 $3.39{\pm}2.59{\Delta}$(prism)에서 $13.87{\pm}6.04{\Delta}$로 증가되었고, 근거리 P.R.C 분리점은 평균 $5.48{\pm}3.42{\Delta}$에서 $18.44{\pm}7.58{\Delta}$로 증가하였다. NPC(near point of convergence)는 $25.87{\pm}7.33cm$에서 $7.48{\pm}2.83cm$로 개선되었고, NPA(near point of accommodation)는 $19.57{\pm}7.16cm$에서 $7.09{\pm}1.88cm$로 개선되었다. 시지각평가에서 시각기억분야를 제외하고는 대응차가 시각완성에서 $17.74{\pm}16.94$(p=0.000), 시각적순차기억에서 $15.65{\pm}17.11$(p=0.000), 배경식별에서 $13.65{\pm}16.63$(p=0.001), 형태향상성에서 $12.74{\pm}18.41$(p=0.003), 시각구별에서 $6.49{\pm}10.07$(p=0.005), 시각적공간지각에서 $4.17{\pm}9.33$(p=0.043) 순으로 개선되었고, 이를 종합한 시지각점수는 대응차가 $15.22{\pm}8.66$(p=0.000)로서 더욱 더 유의한 결과를 나타내었다. 결론: 시기능훈련을 통해서 시각기능의 개선과 시각기억분야를 제외한 시지각점수의 향상이 시각완성, 시각적순차기억, 배경식별, 형태향상성, 시각구별, 시각적공간지각 순으로 유의하게 나타났다. 따라서 시각기능향상을 위한 시기능훈련은 시각의 기능뿐만 아니라 시지각의 기능까지 영향을 미치는 것을 확인 할 수 있으며 시각훈련의 중요성을 인식 할 수 있었다.

패션디자인 교육에 있어서 기초조형 교육내용 개발 (Development of Contents in Fundamental Design Education for Fashion Design)

  • The carelessness of basic design form in education can result in a lack of creativeness and critical thinking ability that will decrease adaptability in a rapidly changing fashion industry. If the fashion education just repeats the previous education of basic form of design, it will be impossible to create original value in fashion design. It is necessary to re-establish the characterized program of the basic form of design education. This study develops concrete educational contents of the basic form of design that can be applied to fashion design through the study of the fundamentals and the concepts of the basic form of design. This study is the basis for the cultivation of talented designers with creativity, forming ability, problem solving skills, and critical thinking ability. The research method is the fundamentals, specialty publications, and designs studied. As a result, an education program for the basic form of design to be used in fashion design education was developed. The development of education contents of the basic form of design has been developed as the plane form that aims the perceptual and emotional effects through the expression of the objects, through the use of dots, lines and planes that are the basics in forming practice and the expression of the abstract images. This suggests subjects composed of the various progressive forming conditions with the abstract dots and lines. In this subject and during the process of the idea, development, and fashion design, the overall unity, harmony, and the theory of gestalt (closure, proximity, and similarity) has been obtained. As a result, the content of the subjects was developed from the perspective that comprehensive decision making skills made from the process can lead to an improved sense of the fashion design.
