  • The purpose of this study was to propose ways to improve the library field practice of Department of Library and Information Science to improve the field environment and educational content, enhance students' field practice, increase efficiency, and increase students' satisfaction. To this end, a survey and interview survey were conducted on students who were going to do field training, and the results are as follows. First, students were well aware of what preparations should be made at school before going to field training. Second, students showed high awareness of their rights guarantees and requests for action in the event of problems at field training institutions. Third, students showed a high demand that field training should guarantee the minimum hourly wage. What is an issue in this regard is that policies that can satisfy both the burden of universities for continuous student guidance and evaluation, the burden of training institutions to conduct education while paying practical expenses, and the rights of students to be protected. This study was aimed at students, but it seems that realistic field practice policies should be presented from various angles as research on government ministries or university authorities is added.

  • Recently, the emphasis on self-directed learning and lifelong education is increasing the importance of school libraries in the curriculum. Accordingly, various studies have been conducted mainly from a structural, institutional and operational point of view. However, more research is necessary on the micro topics such as school library users' autonomous intrinsic motivations in the sense that school libraries play key roles in autonomy-based self-directed education. This study aims at finding out what types of school library use motivations are more important and the degree to which the use motivations affect the school library service quality based on the self-determination theory. In addition, this study examines how the use motivations and the perceived service quality vary depending on the school grade of the library users. Based on a focus-group-interview pilot study, a questionnaire survey was administered on the effects of school library motivations on perceived library service quality to 588 students from 5 high schools and 2 middle schools in Seoul. When the service quality and its components, service affect, information control, and library as place were set as dependent variables, in all these four cases, intrinsic motivations were more significant than extrinsic motivations. In addition, when middle school students and high school students were selected as separate analysis target groups, the results of both analyses show that the higher the intrinsic motivations were, the higher the perceived service quality was. The contribution of this study is that it applies the self-determination theory to school library service, measures the influence of motivation type based on the theoretical basis, and focuses on micro aspects to improve school library services.

  • This study aims to explore ways to improve self-censorship tendency in teacher librarians by identifying factors that influence the self-censorship which appears during collection development in elementary school libraries. For this purpose, first, we examined the concept of self-censorship through a review of related literature, then carried out a series of in-depth interviews as a pilot study to develop a questionnaire, which was used for a questionnaire survey. Finally, the survey data was analyzed statistically with SPSS 21.0, a statistical package. As a result, we have discovered statistically significant relationships between self-censorship and the characteristics in collection development policies, school library committees, and the complaints related with the library collections. Based on these results, the factors on the self-censorship were identified in the perception of the school librarians. Based on these results, we suggest to reinforce the function of review and approval of book selection in the school library committee, developed and approved a collection development policy include guidelines for dealing with users' complaints related to library collection, and stipulated a regulation for school library operation to remove inappropriate books from the library collection.

For this purpose, data were collected through survey from students and teachers at secondary schools and the data were analyzed by semantic network analysis. The results of the research are as follows: First, students usually perceived the role of teacher librarians as 'library management', and teachers did as 'reading education'. Second, among the roles of teacher librarians, it was confirmed that students' and teachers' perceptions of 'information literacy instruction and library instruction' were very weak. Third, while the students' perception of the role of a teacher librarian as a 'teaching collaborator' such as 'teaching and learning support' and 'library assisted instruction and collaborative instruction' was weak, teachers recognized the role of teacher librarians as 'teaching collaborators'. Fourth, students and teachers perceived high levels of 'information service', which consists of 'book recommendation and guide activities'. Finally, it was investigated that 'professionalism' plays a central role in the students' and teachers' perception about the qualities of teacher librarians. These results can be used to establish the role of teacher librarians, develop response strategies for students and teachers, and improve their awareness.

  • This study aims to understand students' perceptions of the spatial characteristics of school libraries when they use them for reading. We selected a set of spatial characteristics by reviewing the literature and conducting a preliminary investigation. Then, we examined how students perceived the importance of and how satisfied they were with each characteristic. In addition, we investigated how students' perceptions differ by the library uses and reading-related activities. We also studied whether the satisfaction of school library users affects their continued use of the libraries. We also verified whether school library user satisfaction is an intervening variable in continued-use intention, which is affected by spatial characteristics perception. We conducted a survey of 342 students from four middle schools. The analysis of the survey outcomes shows differences in library use due to spatial characteristics such as convenience, communicability, diversity, and safety. Factors such as communicability, comfortability, and ambience affected user satisfaction positively. Both aesthetics and communicability also positively influenced the continued-use intention. Furthermore, we identified that communicability, comfortability, and ambience eventually impacted the continued-use intention via user satisfaction, an intervening variable. The significance of this study is that it considered the direction of the school library to support students' reading by regarding the school library as a space for reading.

To do this, a survey of high school students was carried out, with results as follows: First, awareness about the LIS Department and awareness about librarians in our country's high school students was very low. Second, for possible careers in LIS Department, students responded that a graduate of LIS department was likely to enter the workplace in public libraries, state libraries, university libraries, or school libraries, but they would like to work at broadcasting library, national libraries, school libraries, university libraries, public libraries, or portals. Third, awareness of the career path for the LIS Department showed a very large impact on a preference for the LIS Department. Therefore, students who have heard about the LIS Department are highly probable to select this department when they reach university.
