Important characteristics of swirl sprays intersected by a strongly convective gaseous cross flows were experimentally investigated. The breakup processes due to different Weber and Reynolds numbers of liquid and gas streams were visually examined with quantitative measurements of breakup lengths, penetration heights, and droplet sizes. Snapshot images and spray data evidenced that, at lower jet Reynolds number the breakup processes portrays the atomization profiles similar to typical column breakup of single orifice jet. At higher jet Reynolds numbers, disintegration of jet stream is significantly expedited by strong momentum transported from strongly convective gaseous stream. The breakup length and penetration height decreased as the convective flow increase. From the bottom the wall up, the SMD measured the centerline first increases and then decreases before again increasing.
The flowfields generated by gaseous slot injection into a supersonic flow at a Mach number of 3.75 and a Reynolds number of $2.07{\times}10^7$ are simulated numerically. Fine-scale turbulence effects are represented by a two-equation(k-w SST model) closure model which includes $y^+$ effects on the turbulence model. Grid convergence index(GCI) is also considered to provide a measure of uncertainty of the grid convergence. Comparison is made with experimental data and other turbulence model in term of surface static pressure distributions, the length of the upstream separation region, and the penetration height. Results indicate that the k-w SST model correctly predicts mean surface pressure distribution and upstream separation length. However, it is also observed that the numerical simulation over predicts the pressure spike and penetration height compared with experimental data. All these results are taken within $1\%$ error band of grid convergence.
The purpose of this study was to measure penetration of dye stuff(5% Methylene blue, Hematoxylin, Crystal violet and Safranin-O) on silicate cement, Adaptic, Hi-pol and unfilled resin. Each filling material was mixed on the mixing pad and the mixed material was inserted with condensation force of 500gr, 1000gr and 2000gr and without condensation force into preformed glass tube (10mm in diameter and 10mm in height). The specimen was stored in the air for 24 hours, then specimen was immersed in various dye solution (5% methylene blue, hematoxin, crystal violet and safranin-O) for different period of time (l hour and 24 hours). These dye-treated specimen was cut horizontally at the middle portion and the dye penetration in cut surface was measured. Following results were obtained. 1. Pentration of various dye was excessive in silicate cement with and without Condensation force. 2. There has been no evidence of dye penetration in unfilled resin. 3. Dye penetration occurced with in 1 hour period and the extending time didn't affect the dye penetration.

An experimenta investigation of unsteady impinging DI diesel spray on the unheated plate and heated plate has been conducted in a pressurized chamber using high speed shadowgraphy. The ambient agas pressure was varied using nitrogen with chamber pressure of 1.1MPa, 2.1MPa and 2.6MPa. As the increase of ambient gas pressure of ambient gas pressure, the height of spray is increased if entrainment and circulation . At higher temperature of impinging plate, the radial penetration of the impinging spary is incresed , but the height of impinging spray is decreased.
Bearing capacity of open-ended piles depends largely on inner frictional resistance, which is influenced by the degree of soil plugging. While a fully-plugged open-ended pile produces a bearing capacity similar to a closed-ended pile, fully coring (or unplugged) pile produces a much smaller bearing capacity. In general, open-ended piles are driven under partially-plugged mode. The formation of soil plug may depend on many factors, including wall thickness at the pile tip (or inner pile diameter), sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip and relative density. In this paper, we studied the effects of wall thickness at the pile base and sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip on bearing capacity using laboratory model tests. The tests were conducted on a medium dense sandy ground. The model piles with different tip thicknesses and sleeve heights of thickened wall at the pile tip were tested. The results were also discussed using the incremental filling ratio and plug length ratio, which are generally used to describe the degree of soil plugging. The results showed that the bearing capacity increases with tip thickness. The bearing capacity of piles of smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$; D is pile outer diameter) was found to be dependent on the sleeve length, while it is independent on the sleeve length of greater than a 1D length. We also found that the soil plug height is dependent on wall thickness at the pile base. The results on the incremental filling ratio revealed that the thinner walled piles produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths. The results also revealed that the soil plug height is dependent on sleeve length of up to 2D length and independent beyond a 2D length. The piles of a smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at shallow penetration depths while the piles of a larger sleeve length (e.g., ${\geq}2D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of tree height on light transmission, spray penetration, tree growth performance, fruit quality attributes, and labor productivity in the slender-spindle system of 'Hongro'/M.9 apple trees. With increasing tree height, the light penetration into the internal parts of the canopy decreased, especially in the lower canopy. Leaf area index (LAI) increased with increasing tree height, thereby leading to a reduction in the extent of spray penetration into the interior of the canopy. With increasing tree height, shoot growth was more vigorous but produced slender shoots in the upper canopy compared to the lower canopy. Although the soluble solid content and coloration of fruit decreased, there was no difference in fruit firmness and acidity. In addition, the number of final fruit set increased, although the production of large fruit (> 305 g) decreased. The increase in tree height also significantly increased the labor required for practices such as thinning of flowers and fruits, pruning, and harvesting. Nevertheless, this problem of increased in labor input in taller trees would was eased by use of a mechanical lift. Utilizing a lift for thinning the flowers of trees 4.5 m in height saved 14.6 min per tree, compared to the use of ladder. Therefore, it is highly considerable that in order to enhance light transmission and fruit coloration, light conditions should be improved in the internal tree canopy of slender-spindle systems.
Accidental anchor drop can cause disturbances to seabed materials and pose significant threats to the safety and serviceability of submarine structures such as pipelines. In this study, a series of anchor drop tests was carried out to investigate the penetration mechanism of a Hall anchor in sand and clay. A special anchor drop apparatus was designed to model the inflight drop of a Hall anchor. Results indicate that Coriolis acceleration was the primary cause of large horizontal offsets in sand, and earth gravity had negligible impact on the lateral movement of dropped anchors. The indued final horizontal offset was shown to increase with the elevated drop height of an anchor, and the existence of water can slow down the landing velocity of an anchor. It is also observed that water conditions had a significant effect on the influence zone caused by anchors. The vertical influence depth was over 5 m, and the influence radius was more than 3 m if the anchor had a drop height of 25 m in dry sand. In comparison, the vertical influence depth and radius reduced to less than 3 m and 2 m, respectively, when the anchor was released from 10 m height and fell into the seabed with a water depth of 15 m. It is also found that the dynamically penetrating anchors could significantly influence the earth pressure in clay. There is a non-linear increase in the measured penetration depth with kinematic energy, and the resulted maximum earth pressure increased dramatically with an increase in kinematic energy. Results from centrifuge model tests in this study provide useful insights into the penetration mechanism of a dropped anchor, which provides valuable data for design and planning of future submarine structures.

A suite of 3D large deformation finite element (FE) analyses was performed to investigate the load transfer mechanism and penetration resistance of spudcan foundations in heterogeneous soil profile consisting of sand and clay. The Elasto-Plastic models following Mohr-Coulomb and Tresca failure criteria were adopted for sand and clay, respectively. The accuracy of the numerical model was validated against centrifuge test measurements. The dense sand behavior with dilation is modeled using the non-associated flow rule. An investigation study consisting of key parameters, which includes variation in soil stratigraphy (sand-clay, sand-clay-sand), strength parameters of sand and clay (' and su) and normalized height ratio of the sand layer (Hs/D) was conducted to assess the penetration behavior of spudcan. Based on calculated outputs, it was demonstrated that these parameters have a significant influence on the penetration resistance of spudcan. The calculated penetration resistance profiles are compared with the published (sand overlying clay) analytical model. It is confirmed that for the case of two-layer soil, the available theoretical model provides an accurate estimate of peak penetration resistance (qpeak). In the case of three-layer soil, the presence of a third stiff layer affects the penetration resistance profile due to the squeezing of the soil.

The shape of excessive penetration mainly depends on welding conditions(welding current and welding voltage), and welding process(groove gap and welding speed). These conditions are the major affecting factors to width and height of back bead. In this paper, back-bead prediction and weldability estimation using artificial neural network were investigated. Results are as follows. 1) If groove gap, welding current, welding voltage and welding speed will be previously determined as a welding condition, width and height of back bead can be predicted by artificial neural network system without experimental measurement. 2) From the result applied to three weld quality levels(ISO 5817), both experimented measurement using vision sensor and predicted mean values by artificial neural network showed good agreement. 3) The width and height of back bead are proportional to groove gap, welding current and welding voltage, but welding speed. is not.

Characteristics of a diesel spray impingement with the variation of ambient temperature, wall temperature and ambient pressure were investigated through shadowgraphy method by using high speed camera. The radial penetration of spray was increased with ambient temperature and wall temperature. It is resulted from the decrease of ambient gas density caused by the increase of temperature. The height of spray was also increased with ambient temperature and wall temperature, because the height of stagnate region is noticeably increased, although height of wall jet vortex is decreased. At the same ambient pressure, the area ratio of impinging spray of room temperature environment to high temperature environment was increased, as the temperature difference between room temperature and high temperature increases. And the increment of area ratio was higher at low ambient pressure than high ambient pressure.
