The congestion of pedestrians impedes the utilization efficiency of a subway station. Conflicts among pedestrians due to unseparated pedestrian flows not only increase the impedance of pedestrian mobility but also negatively affect on pedestrian safety. This paper analyzes the travel characteristics of bi-directional pedestrian flow based on microscopic movements, and evaluates the operation efficiency on separating the traffic line. The subway station was simulated in a 2-D grid structure by applying Discrete Element Method, and the movement is organized in each cell of the grid. As a result, the model explicates that separating the traffic line and encouraging the 'Keep right rule' would be mostly effective for the conflicting flows. Therefore, applying the 'Walking Guidance System' would be efficient to improve the pedestrian convenience and mobility.

In order to improve traffic flow and vehicular safety, installation of roundabouts is encouraging recently. Roundabouts are generally installed at which traffic flow and pedestrian flow is relatively low intersections. Roundabouts reduce vehicle speed, minimize vehicle weaving, and reduce critical conflict points. For these reasons, roundabouts are generally operated unprotected pedestrian crosswalk, thus a shortcoming for pedestrian safety always exists at roundabouts. The purpose of this study is developing a dynamic signal metering algorithm for traffic and pedestrian at four-way-approach with two-lane roundabouts in which three different operation algorithms(fixed-time pedestrian, vehicle signal metering, and vehicle and pedestrian signal metering) are suggested and its performance is tested by using VISSIM. The results of the fixed pedestrian signal operation show that there is a big average delay increase in general and that increases up to 51.4 seconds/vehicle(42.5%) when the total number of approaching vehicle is 3,800 vehicle/hour. However, the results of the simultaneous dynamic signal metering operation for the vehicle and pedestrian crossing with push button show that there is a substantial average delay reduction up to 40.6 seconds/vehicle(42.7%) when the total number of approaching vehicle is 3,000 vehicle/hour.
One of the key problems in the design of high-rise commercial complex is how to guide reasonable pedestrian distribution in commercial space. In this study, pedestrian distribution in three high-rise commercial complexes in Shanghai and Hong Kong was studied using spatial configuration analysis software Space Syntax and quantification of physical elements in commercial spaces, such as functional attractiveness, entrances, escalators, level variations and passage width. Additionally, in an attempt to integrate functions with spatial integration and spatial depth, two combination variables, the spatial coefficient of function (IF) and spatial depth coefficient of function (F/D), were proposed. The results of the correlation analysis and multiple regression analyses reflected the following: (1) Regarding the influence on pedestrian distribution, there was a synergistic and complementary relationship between function and space; (2) The comprehensive flow distribution analytic model could successfully interpret flow distribution in high-rise commercial complexes and its R Square ranged up to about 70% in the three cases; (3) The spatial coefficient of function (IF) and spatial depth coefficient (F/D) could effectively integrate functions and spatial configuration, which could help close the gap between over-emphasis on function in commercial research and the lack of consideration of function in space-syntax analysis.
The purpose of this thesis is to provide basic information of efficient flow line arrangement, which results from examining the factors of route choice with a focus on the store' space elements and pedestrian activity patterns in the outlets. The route tracking is applied to grasp pedestrian activity patterns, therefore, a concrete analysis into influential factors of the space structure arrangement and forms on route choice. The route tracking is a means to understand pedestrian activity patterns by establishing an unrecognizable space and examining every route in the investigating area for pedestrian activity pattern research. Three sample stores have different systems in the ground plan structures, the escalator location and the directions. The analysis focuses on the booth arrangement and shopping patterns. In conclusion, route choice of the customers and the structure of the space are quite closely related and affect the quality of shopping. This can suggest evidence for the need of the space structure to meet the pedestrian activity patterns.

Modern society is an interaction between many different environments. It is important to the mutual relationships between people and especially between people and the environment. One of the mutual relationships between people and the environment is the traffic system, especially the traffic signals which give priority to pedestrian and traffic flow. Traffic signals for the pedestrian on the crosswalk contribute to a safe road environment for the pedestrian, while the traffic signals for the pedestrian running for the flickering of the green signal causes psychological stress. Therefore, this study investigated whether the walking velocity was influenced by the flickering of the green signal or not. Also, this study investigated whether the walking distance had an effect on the walking velocity of the elderly pedestrian or not. It was proved that the flickering of the green signal and the walking distance influenced the walking velocity and subjective sensitiveness according to the result of this study.

Social pedestrian groups are the basic elements that constitute a crowd; therefore, detection of such groups is scientifically important for modeling social behavior, as well as practically useful for crowd video understanding. A social group refers to a cluster of members who tend to keep similar motion state for a sustained period of time. One of the main challenges of social group detection arises from the complex dynamic variations of crowd patterns. Therefore, most works model dynamic groups to analysis the crowd behavior, ignoring the existence of stationary groups in crowd scene. However, in this paper, we propose a novel unified framework for detecting social pedestrian groups in crowd videos, including dynamic and stationary pedestrian groups, based on spatiotemporal-oriented energy measurements. Dynamic pedestrian groups are hierarchically clustered based on energy flow similarities and trajectory motion correlations between the atomic groups extracted from principal spatiotemporal-oriented energies. Furthermore, the probability distribution of static spatiotemporal-oriented energies is modeled to detect stationary pedestrian groups. Extensive experiments on challenging datasets demonstrate that our method can achieve superior results for social pedestrian group detection and crowd video classification.

The conflict of opposing pedestrian traffic-flow in a subway station(made up of stair, passageway, and escalator) diminishes the convenience and mobility of its users. In addition, the station's efficiency would be negatively affected by the growth of delay and queue length in pedestrian facilities. As these phenomena have been resulted by the overlapping in pedestrian's traffic-line, the separation of it would alleviate these problems. For the criteria and methodology of separation, this paper has investigated the bi-directional queue length and delay on the entrance of each facility (stair, passageway and escalator). Since the pedestrian flow exists bidirectionally, we have used the weighted average by inflow rate for the delay value. For the optimization of the separation, the Genetic Algorithm has been utilized in order to minimize the delay.

Vehicle-into-pedestrian traffic accidents show a very high mortality rate compared to their frequency of occurrence. Throughout the world, governments and insurance companies tend to establish and implement new safety standards for pedestrian protection. In order to improve the performance of pedestrian protection, the Korean government has evaluated the pedestrian safety of vehicles under the Korea New Car Assessment Program (K-NCAP) since 2007. The pedestrian protection performance has improved gradually, but it remains insufficient. A pedestrian protection system consisting of a hood lift system and a pedestrian airbag can be a solution to pedestrian safety. A pedestrian airbag design procedure based on a newly defined design scenario is introduced to reduce the head injury criterion of pedestrians. The proposed design scenario is discussed from a practical viewpoint and applied to manufacture pedestrian protection systems.

The main purpose of this study is to discriminate the pedestrian environment by simple calculation such as using the matrix from pedestrian level of service. However, the general use of pedestrian level of service cannot discriminate the environment of footpaths, especially in Seoul. Most of the passages in Seoul are showing level A, which means most passages are spacious, but pedestrians don't agree that passages are wide enough to walk. In conclusion, comparing the pedestrian level of service with pedestrian satisfaction in different circumstances such as use of building in lower floors. Test areas are 1,157 spots in Seoul. First, The new pedestrian level of service shows equally in all spots. Second, spots where the highest pedestrian satisfaction are mostly in level B or level C, thus planning the walkways in future, level B or level C is recommended in most cases.

Novel Front End Module(FEM) with improved pedestrian protection is very important to reduce the severity of pedestrian injury. The FEM needs to have enough space from hood to absorb the energy from any pedestrian collision. In this study, the cooling performance of the FEM to cool the engine was investigated under 25% height reduction. The results indicated that the cooling performance analysis was about 86% level compared to that of the conventional FEM. Also, good qualitative agreement between CFD predictions and experimental measurements was found. This FEM needs the cooling performance enhancement for changed air flow path at the frontal part of vehicle. Therefore, we showed an improved performance using air guide setup and shape modification under the high load condition.
