  • Blood serum concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in employees who worked at a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI), members of residential community who lived near the MSWI (<0.3km) and members of residential community lived far from the MSWI (>10 km). Human blood serum samples were analyzed for all PCB congeners using high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). The mean levels of total PCBs and dioxin-like PCBs in 87 serum samples were 242.77 ng/g lipid and 8.83 TEQ pg/g lipid, respectively. The PCB homologue profiles showed that penta-, hexa-, hepta-chlorinated biphenyls contributed more than 80% of the total PCBs concentration. The most abundant congeners were PCB153, PCB138, PCB180, PCB187, PCB118. A statistical analysis was performed to determine whether there were significant correlations between PCB concentrations and specific variables such as age, gender, smoking habits, occupation, BMI (Body Mass Index) and time of residence. As a result, the age was found to be strongly correlated with serum PCB concentrations. In addition, there were strong correlations between total PCBs and PCB153 (r=0.93, p<.0001), dioxin-like PCBs and PCB118 (r=0.98, p<.0001). So these two congeners are satisfactory indicators for total PCB concentrations and dioxin-like PCBs in human blood respectively.

  • PCBs are wide spread persistent environmental pollutants that exert a broad spectrum of toxic effects. PCBs includes 209 possible congeners differing in extent and position of chlorination of their aromatic rings. In order to understand the toxic mechanism of PCBs, we have tested the effect of PCB on the EROD activity in vivo.(omitted)

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) are members of the halogenated aromatic group of environmental pollutants. Because of their unique physical and chemical properties, notably their stability and widespread use, PCBs are sidely distributed and transported throughout the global environment. In fact, residues of PCBs have been identified in air, water, aquatic and marine sediments, and human tissue samples.(omitted)

  • Environmental samples contaminated with elemental sulfur(waters 22, sediments 20, crucian carps 19) collected from Soho Lake during the period of Sep. 1981 to Apr. 1982 were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) and organochlorine insecticides by GLC-ECD. Elemental sulfur was found to interfere in the residue analysis of environmental samples and the sulfur was eliminated, prior to analysis, with copper powder. PCBs residues in Soho lake were temporarily characterized as Aroclor 1254 and were analyzed at minimum detectable quantity of 0.04 ng by derivatizing PCBs to decachlorobiphenyl(DCB). PCBs were positively detected in all samples and its residue levels in waters, sediments, and crucian carps were $0.015{\sim}0.15$ ppb, $0.038{\sim}0.088$ ppm and 0.091 ppm, respectively. The residue levels of PCBs in all samples but sediments at central and outlet site of the lake were higher than those of total p,p'-DDT. The residue levels of PCBs in waters varied with inlets, i.e. those at right inlet site were three times of those at left inlet site. The main source of PCBs residues in the environmental samples of Soho Lake was not evident by present work.

  • This study examined remediation of soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other persistent organic pollutants by using subcritical water. Our results showed that removal efficiency of PCBs from soil and treatment temperature were linearly proportional under subcritical conditions. The removal efficiency as increased as reacting period increased. PCBs contaminating fine particles in soil were less effectively removed than those in entire contaminated soil. Reaction of the zero-valent iron and PCBs under subcritical condition produced dechlorinated product, where most of the PCBs were oxidised while little remained as dechlorinated. Other organic pollutants, such as TPH, BTEX, TCE/PCE, and chlorpyrifos, were removed by more than 90% at $300^{\circ}C$. Considering removal efficiency and identification of by-products, we suggest that subcritical water treatment may be effectively applied to soils contaminated with various persistent organic pollutants.

  • This study was performed to improve the analytical methods and re-establish the regulatory standard of PCBs-containing solid wastes for sufficient management in which has been concerned internationally. To do this, the sampling, pre-treatment and quantification methods which were used in USA and Japan were discussed. It was thought properly that new standard of PCBs-containing solid wastes was established through correlation with PCBs concentration of transformer oil. The surface wipe sampling was selected in the nonporous materials and cutting sampling in the porous materials. In the absence of transformer oils, electrical equipment is PCB-contaminated if it has PCBs at ${\geq}0.4{\mu}g/100cm^2$ as measured by a wipe test of a nonporous surface and if it has at 0.04 mg/L as measured by cutting test of a porous material. Also, new analytical methods for PCBs containing solid waste were proposed.

  • This study was conducted to measure the residual PCBs in sediments of 4 great rivers in Korea by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. From the results, PCBs were positively detected in all samples. The residue levels of total PCBs in sediments in near of SS and OS were $290.87{\mu}g/kg$ and $221.11{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. The PCBs contamination may be in association with total organic compound (TOC) in sediments. Congener 66, 74, 90, 101, 105, 110, 118, 138, 149, 153, 180, 187 as IUPAC No were predominant species found in sediments and the polyCBs detected most aboundantly in sediments were tetraCBs and pentaCBs. From the study, it appears that the PCBs contamination in sediments of 4 great rivers is not serious and the analysis from enough many sites is needed for the next survey.

  • This experimental study was performed to obtain thermal energy from the combustion of synthetic gas, produced by the pyrolysis of insulating oil containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a high temperature and high pressure reactor. The average synthetic gas generated was $59.67Am^3/hr$ via the steady state gasification of insulating oil waste (20 kg/hr) with average concentrations (standard deviation) of $CO_2$, CO, and $H_2$ in the synthetic gas of $38.63{\pm}3.11%$, $35.18{\pm}1.93%$, and $28.42{\pm}1.68%$, respectively. The concentrations of the PCBs in the transformer insulating oil and synthetic gas after its gasification, and the concentrations of the dioxins that could be produced from the incomplete degradation of PCBs were measured. It was revealed that the PCBs in the insulating oil were composed of the series from tetrachlorobiphenyl to octachlorobiphenyl. However, only the #49, #44, #52, and #47/75/48 congeners were detected from the synthetic gas after gasification of the insulating oil and in the flue gas from the combustor. In conclusion, the experimental conditions suggested in this study were very useful for the appropriate treatment of insulating oil containing PCBs. Also, fuel gas containing CO and $H_2$ can be obtained from the pyrolysis of insulating oil containing PCBs.

  • This Analysis was conducted for 13 toxic-PCBs having TEF value among 209 PCBs isomers in sediment by isotope dilution HRGC/HRMS method. From the result, the recovery of surrogate standard was in the range of 71~99%. The concentration range for 13 toxic-PCBs in sediment was found to be 0.84~2.49 ng/g, among them the concentration levels of 2,2',3,3',4,4',5-HpCB(IUPAC No. 170) and 2,2',3,4,4',5,5'-HpCB(IUPAC No. 180) represented almost 50% of total concentrarion and that of 2,3,4,4,5-PeCB(IUPAC No. 114) showed over 10%. The TEQ concentration levelwas in the range of 0.38~2.63 pg-TEQ/g and 3,3',4,4',5-PeCB(IUPAC No. 126) concentration represented over 50% of total TEQ concentration.
