  • This study has been carried out in order to effectively manage three groups of unregulated hazardous organic substances (PCDD/DFs, PAHs, PCBs) in South Korea. The investigated substances have been analyzed according to the test methods for hazardous substances in specified wastes provided by the National Institute of Environmental Research, Korea. Total contents of the organic compounds have been determined for hazardous wastes from three major industrial categories (paint, iron removal, steelmaking), such as waste organic solvent, waste paint or dust. By investigating the waste samples for 7 PAHs using GC/MSD, Naphthalene has been detected (N.D~1631.33 mg/kg). The highest Naphthalene concentration, which exceeded the korean marine dumping waste standard, was found in waste organic solvents and waste paints. Although a content analysis of 7 PCB isomers has been conducted, none of these compounds was detected. The analysis of PCDD/DFs has revealed that all samples meet the criterion for low POP content defined in the technical guidelines developed under the Basel Convention. The PCDD/DFs content in dust samples deriving from 10 manufacturing processes (billet, bloom) was determined to be in the range of N.D~5.66 ng I-TEQ/g waste.

  • Bacterium capable of using biphenyl as a sole source of carbon and energy were isolated from soil, and based on the results of 16S rDNA sequence, strain BK10 identified as a Sphingobium yanoiktiyae. The optimum cultural conditions were as follows; $NH_4NO_3$ 1g, $K_2HPO_4$ 1g, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 0.5g, $CaCO_3$ 0.2 g per 1 liter of distilled water. The Sphingobium yanoikuyae BK10 strain was completely utilized biphenyl in mineral salt media containing biphenyl at concentration 500 $\mu$g/ml of biphenyl as a sole carbon and energy source within 48 hours. Optimumal pH and temperature for biphenyl degradation and cell growth of strains were 6.0$\sim$8.0 and 20$\sim$50$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Especially, at 30$^{\circ}C$, cell-growth were higher than other temperature. Cell grown on biphenyl has been shown to have a higher removal rate for biphenyl than grown on sucrose. This study shows that Sphingobium yanoikuyae BK10 strain had a high biodegradation capability of biphenyl and can be simulate a candidate compounds the bioremediation of PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyl) contaminant soil and water.

  • Objectives: The concentration distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenlys (dl-PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fine particles were investigated to provide basic data on POP behavior and composition analysis. Methods: The concentrations of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PAHs by particle size were evaluated for TSP, PM10, and PM2.5. Also, fine dust component analysis and factor analysis were performed to identify the source of PCDD/Fs. Results: The particle size distribution was found to account for 24.3% of >10 ㎛, 14.5% of 2.5-10 ㎛, and 61.2% of <2.5 ㎛. The average contributions of coarse particles (>2.5 ㎛) and fine particles (<2.5 ㎛) were PCDD/Fs 67%, dl-PCBs 66%, benzo (a) pyrene 83% and PAHs 84%, and the contributions of fine particles (<2.5 ㎛) were higher than coarse particles (>2.5 ㎛). However, the contributions of coarse particles increased in April to September with higher temperatures, while those of fine particles increased in February to March with lower temperatures. Conclusions: Low chlorinated (4Cl-5Cl) PCDD/Fs were more adsorbed compared to coarse particles due to the influence of pollutant migration from particulate to gas phase according to temperature rise, whereas high chlorinated (6Cl-8Cl) PCDD/Fs were more adsorbed compared to fine particles. PCDD/Fs sources were assessed to be major sources of emissions, such as incineration facilities and/or open burning.

  • In this study, the possibility of biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by various white rot fungi was evaluated, and outstanding white rot fungi for the degradation of PCBs were selected. Seven white rot fungi were used to degrade Aroclor 1254 and 1260, which are widely considered to be toxic and difficult to degrade. And the degradation rates of Aroclors by selected white rot fungi were performed by GC analysis. Through the resistance test of white rot fungi on different concentrations of PCBs, the inhibition of mycelial growth of Cystidodontia isubellina was much less than that of others, and this fungus grew faster than others, relatively. Based on this result, it was considered that C. isubellina was selected as degrading fungus for Aroclors. As a result of biodegradation rate of Aroclors by Cystidodontia isubellina, the degradation rate of Arolor 1254 was reached to 57.57% in 13 days, which showed very high degradation rate. Also the degradation rate of Aroclor 1260 by C. isubellina had a tendency of increasing along with increasing incubation day. Maximal degradation rate of Aroclor 1260 was 49.43% at 13 days. Based on this results, it indicated that in comparison with a previous study, high degradation rate was obtained by C. isubellina.

  • Molten carbonate oxidation (MCO) is one of the promising alternative technologies for the treatment of the chlorinated organic compounds because it is capable of trapping chlorine during a destruction of them. In this study, destructions of chlorinated organic compounds ($C_6H_5Cl$, $C_2HCl_3$ and $CCl_4$) and an insulated oil containing PCBs were performed by using the two stage molten carbonate oxidation system. MCO reactor temperature largely affected the destruction of the chlorinated organic compounds. Destruction of the chlorinated organics very efficient in the primary MCO reactor however a significant amount of CO was emitted from the MCO system. This CO emission was gradually decreased by an increase in the primary reactor temperature and oxidizing air feed rate. The HCl emission from the MCO system was below 7 ppm regardless of tested conditions. The chlorine collection efficiencies were in the range of 99.95-99.99%. The destruction of PCBs in the insulated oil was efficient at a temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ and overall destruction efficiency of them was determined as over 99.9999%.

  • THMs and PCBs were separated and analysed with elution on Novapak ODS or $\mu-Bondapak$ phenyl column by an eluent containing p-nitrophenol (p-NP). THMs studied were CHCl3, CHBrCl2, CHBr2Cl, and CHBr3, and PCBs used were Aroclor 1221, 1242, 1248, $\alpha-$ and $\beta-BHC.$ It was thought that the retention on the stationary phase and sensitivities of the samples are related to the interaction between the sample and stationary phase or p-NP. THMs were separated completely on the ODS column by elution with MeOH-water (30 : 70) containing $1.0{\times}10^{-4}$ M p-NP and some of PCBs were separated on the phenyl column by elution with $CH_3CN$-water(50 : 50) containing $1.0{\times}10^{-4}$ M p-NP. Detection limits of THMs were from $1.0{\times}10^{-4}$ g to $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ g. Aroclors were $2{\times}10^{-6}$ g, and $\alpha-$ and $\beta-BHC$ were $2{\times}10^{-4}$ g and $1.0{\times}10^{-4}$ g respectively.
