  • To examine adequacy of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of layer interface conditions, this study compared outputs of finite element analysis and multi-layer elastic analysis as vertical load was applied to the surface of asphalt pavements. Structural pavement analysis considering influence of a horizontal load was also carried out in order to simulate passing vehicle loads under various interface conditions using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program. Pavement performance depending on interface conditions was quantitatively evaluated and fundamental study of layer interface effect was performed in this study. As results of the study, if only vertical load is applied, subdivision of either fully bonded or fully unbonded is enough to indicate interface condition. On the other hand, when horizontal load is applied with vertical load, pavement behavior and performance are greatly changed with respect to layer interface condition.

  • Highway traffic noise is the one of the most frequent pollutant source of environmental claims in Korea for the last 10 years. For abating the noise from the highways, characteristics of highway noise source should be investigated and identified before performing the abatements. Highway noises are affected by traffic volume, vehicle types and speed, tyre and pavement types. In this study, highway noises which measured from different pavements have been analyzed and compared. Especially, the noise from the asphalt concrete pavement, cement concrete pavement and low-noise pavement have been measured simultaneously at the same traffic condition and compared each other. Hopefully, the data of the study may be used for abating highway noise and further studies.

  • Periodical evaluations of the airfield pavement are necessary to provide the ability for the existing pavement to support the increasing volume of air traffic. Also, the evaluation of the existing Pavement condition is necessary for the decision of the maintenance strategy. For this reason, airport pavements in Korea have been evaluated every five years currently. It was known, however, that the current pavement evaluation methodology was not logical and practical. The purpose of this study is to compare the current pavement evaluation method with design chart to the mechanistic approach used in other advanced countries. As a result of this study the mechanistic approach is found to be more logical than the current method.

  • PURPOSES : Bonded concrete overlay is a favorable maintenance method since the material properties are similar to existing concrete pavements. In addition, bonded concrete overlay has advantage of structural performance since the overlay layer and the existing pavement perform as a monolithic layer. It is important to have suitable bond strength criteria to secure the performance of bonded concrete overlay. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing bond strength characteristics between existing concrete pavement and overlay material. METHODS: Bond strength between overlay and existing pavement are measured and analyzed for various conditions such as the type of overlay materials, compressive and flexure strength of overlay and existing pavement, and deterioration status of existing pavement. RESULTS: The strength of overlay material does not significantly influence the bond strength. The overlay of ultra-rapid hardening cement generally gives low bond strength. However, ultra rapid hardening polymer modified concrete gives robust bond strength. The deterioration of existing concrete significantly decrease the bond strength. CONCLUSIONS: Bond strength of bonded concrete overlay highly depends on condition of existing concrete pavement rather than overlay material.

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of asphalt pavement reducing surface temperature by using Pipe cooling system is to make pleasant city life environment. METHODS: We considered building condition to lay the pipes under asphalt pavement and figured out that temperature reducing effect with pipe cooling system. In addition, we guessed rutting through wheel tracking test with a laid the pipes under asphalt mixture and performed fatigue cracking through a flexural fatigue test for performance evaluation of pipe cooling system. RESULTS: When pipe cooling system worked, the temperature of pavement model reduced quickly in test. The system can turn down the degree by 4 or 5 quickly as well. It didn't affect rutting to lay the pipes under the pavement, but it can get damaged to asphalt pavement in early stage by the result of performance evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: We figured out that pipe cooling system can turn down the temperature of aspalt pavement surface through tests. We suggest that pipe cooling system should be considered one of the effective way to solve urban heat island problem.

  • The application of sulfur polymer emulsion (SPE) as an acrylate substitute for semi-rigid pavement grout was evaluated, and the performance improvement by employing PVA fibers were also evaluated. The result indicated that the filling ratio of semi-rigid pavement material decreased as the fiber content increased, but it was measured to be 92~94% in every mixing condition, which satisfies the target performance, 90%. The maximum Marshall stability value of semi-rigid pavement material was measured to be 25.4 kN, which is about 4.7 times higher than the Korean Standard required for semi-rigid pavement material, 5.0 kN. The dynamic stability evaluation of semi-rigid pavement material indicated that the resistance to deformation from the wheel tracking test was improved by an SPE substitution, and in every mixing condition, the deformation converged to a constant value after 45 minutes with the same dynamic stability of 31,500 times/mm. The strain at the flexural failure was about 0.53%, which shows superior rigidity to asphalt pavements. The examination of abrasion resistance and impact resistance showed that the loss ratio was 9.8~6.0% in every mixing condition, which indicates a good abrasion resistance. Also, when fiber content ratio was 0.3%, the impact resistance was 2.82 times higher compared to plain (i.e., when fibers were not added). In the limited range of this study, an SPE substitution ratio of 30% was found to be an optimal level considering the mechanical and durability performance. In addition, it is thought that semi-rigid pavement material with superior performance could be manufactured if fiber content ratio up to 0.3% is applied depending on the purpose of use.

  • Currently the reasonability of threshold values for rutting and cracking does not clearly defined at the Pavement Rehabilitation Decision Tree on national highway PMS(Pavement Management System). The goal of this study is to provide the reasonable threshold values for the national highway asphalt concrete pavement rehabilitation. To achieve this goal, test section that represents typical asphalt concrete pavement of national highway was selected and pavement export were participated. Pavement condition survey has been conducted and pavement performance data at the selected roadway section were analyzed. From this study, reasonable threshold values of Pavement Rehabilitation Decision Tree were suggested based on the pavement expert's engineering judgement. In terms of crack repairs, the application of overlay after cutting is required to deteriorated area where existing crack ratio is over 35% and just overlay is required to where crack ratio is over 20%. On rutting, rut depth over 13mm is required to overlay after cutting and rut depth over 10mm is just needed to overlay.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest a specific investigation guideline to decide priority of repairing old concrete pavements that pile up substantially. METHODS : In this study, a principle of division of homogeneous sections was proposed to reflect the characteristics of the pavement reasonably in the specific investigation results. In addition, a checklist and guideline of field investigation were suggested for the old concrete pavement sections, which require inspection toward their durability and structural performance. Furthermore, the items of laboratory test necessary to the old concrete pavement were suggested based on the existing laboratory test considering characteristics of the old concrete pavement. The present condition of the old concrete pavement could be analyzed by the test results. RESULTS : A method of division of homogeneous sections suitable for the specific investigation of the old concrete pavement was suggested. The proportions of distress severity of pavement sections were compared by distress type to figure out the present state of the old concrete pavement. Scaling, durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), and longitudinal spalling were selected as the most severe distress types. The detailed positions of the sections were also suggested. The checklist of the specific investigation was categorized by field survey and laboratory test, and its evaluation criteria were proposed. The three types of the sections of durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), bridge connection, and asphalt overlay were selected as the sections of the field survey. The compressive strength, void structure, and chloride penetration depth were suggested as the items of the laboratory test. CONCLUSIONS : A fundamental level of the guideline was suggested in this study to resolve the problem of old concrete pavement. Appropriate guidelines related to the repair of the old concrete pavement should be provided by performing additional research efforts.

  • The US Pavement Design method (AASHTO) and HDM-4, a road pavement maintenance decision system, are not suitable for domestic pavement design, construction and maintenance. KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) has been developed to reflect Korea's environmental conditions and vehicle characteristics, thereby, extending pavement life. The main objective of this study is to select the best alternative through Life Cycle Cost $CO_2$ (LCCC) calculations among three representative maintenance strategies using KPRP design software since the environment cost resulting from the extended pavement life will also differ. The analysis of this study illustrates that cumulative carbon emissions for 40 years in alternative 2 (Cutting and Overlaying at Year 30) is the lowest option among them, and the basic cost of $CO_2$ emission by various road maintenance and repair work can be used for suggesting an optimal maintenance strategy for highway agency.

  • PURPOSES : Pavement Management System contains the data that describe the condition of the road. Under limited budget, the data can be utilized for efficient plans. The objective of this research is to develop a mixed integer program model that maximizes remaining durable years (or Lane-Kilometer-Years) in road maintenance planning. METHODS : An optimization model based on a mixed integer program is developed. The model selects a cluster of sectors that are adjacent to each other according to the road condition. The model also considers constraints required by the Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation. They select two lanes at most not to block the traffic and limit the number of sectors for one-time construction to finish the work in given time. We incorporate variable cost constraints. As the model selects more sectors, the unit cost of the construction becomes smaller. The optimal choice of the number of sectors is implemented using piecewise linear constraints. RESULTS : Data (SPI) collected from Pavement Management System managed by Seoul Metropolitan City are fed into the model. Based on the data and the model, the optimal maintenance plans are established. Some of the optimal plans cannot be generated directly in existing heuristic approach or by human intuition. CONCLUSIONS:The mathematical model using actual data generates the optimal maintenance plans.
