  • This aim of the study is to show the necessity of implementing an industrial innovation strategy with consideration given to characteristics of the industrial technology. The relationship between industrial technological characteristics and innovation performance is analyzed by using an innovation survey as well as a human capital corporate panel (HCCP). The time-lag effect is also examined. Findings of the analysis show that high-tech industries have entered the post catch-up technology innovation stage in the mid-2000s, but low-tech industries still seem to stay in the catch-up stage. In terms of technology policy, the additional technology innovation support policy should focus on enhancing the innovation capability of the middle and low technology industries, since high technology industries are already developing their own innovation capability. It is necessary to strengthen capacity building through technical cooperation with technology consulting, rather than providing technical support through suppliers.

  • This study analyzes patent trends by deriving sub-technical fields of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) industry, and analyzing technology value, originality, and diversity for each sub-technical field. To collect patent data, a set of international patent classification(IPC) codes related to OLED technology was defined, and OLED-related patents applied from 2005 to 2017 were collected using a set of IPC codes. Then, a large number of collected patent documents were classified into 12 major technologies using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA) topic model and trends for each technology were investigated. Patents related to touch sensor, module, image processing, and circuit driving showed an increasing trend, but virtual reality and user interface recently decreased, and thin film transistor, fingerprint recognition, and optical film showed a continuous trend. To compare the technological value, the number of forward citations, originality, and diversity of patents included in each technology group were investigated. From the results, image processing, user interface(UI) and user experience(UX), module, and adhesive technology with high number of forward citations, originality and diversity showed relatively high technological value. The results provide useful information in the process of establishing a company's technology strategy.

  • In this study, we have analyzed the impact of firm, innovation and industry characteristics on firm's appropriation strategy focusing of the relative preference of patents and trade secrets by using the Korea Corporate Innovation Survey 2005, 2010 and 2014 data. According to the analysis results, companies with characteristics such as venture, high-technology industry, receipt of public R&D subsidies, performing product innovation, high R&D expenditure, prefer patents to trade secrets relatively. However, firm size and R&D cooperation did not have a statistically significant effect on the relative preference. This shows that policy on appropriation system considering the industry characteristics may be more effective. Companies in the industries with a high market concentration showed that trade secrets are preferred, especially these characteristic was distinctly in small and venture companies. This means that the increase in strategic patent applications of the incumbent firms is able to restrict the patent activities in small and venture companies. Because the excessive increase in strategic patents is likely to constrain the innovation activities of small and venture firms ultimately, policy initiatives to limit the abuse of strategic patent applications is required.
