  • To strengthen the existing regulations with respect to carbon emissions in the marine industry, there has been an increase in the number of studies focusing on realizing improvements in the utilization of vessels. While the development of new techniques related to these improvements can be costly, in this paper, we discuss a cost-effective method that may be applied directly to existing ships. The experimental data obtained suggests that the greatest reduction in energy loses can be realized by installing a double-partition wall on the storage tank of the ship, among other methods.

  • The aroma component of Hallabong peel has been characterized by GC-MS with two different extraction techniques: solid-phase trapping solvent extraction (SPTE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction (HSSPME). Aroma components emitted from Hallabong peel were compared with those of other citrus varieties: lemon, orange and grapefruit by SPTE and GC-MS. d-Limonene (96.98%) in Hallabong was the main component, and relatively higher peaks of cis- ${\beta}$-ocimene, valencene and -farnesene were observed. Other volatile aromas, such as sabinene, isothujol and ${\delta}$-elemene were observed as small peaks. Also, principal components analysis was employed to distinguish citrus aromas based on their chromatographic data. For HSSPME, the fiber efficiency was evaluated by comparing the partition coefficient ($K_{gs}$Kgs) between the HS gaseous phase and HS-SPME fiber coating, and the relative concentration factors (CF) of the five characteristic compounds of the four citrus varieties. 50/30 ${\mu}$m DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber was verified as the best choice among the four fibers evaluated for all the samples.

  • An analytical method was developed to determine tricyclazole residues in rice grain, straw, and soil using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet absorption detection. Tricyclazole was extracted with methanol from moist rice grain, straw, and soil samples. n-Hexane washing was employed to remove nonpolar co-extractives during liquid-liquid partition. Tricyclazole was then extracted with dichloromethane from alkaline aqueous phase, while acidic interferences remained in the phase. Dichloromethane extract was further purified by silica gel column chromatography prior to HPLC determination. Reverse-phase HPLC using an octadecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate and quantitate the tricyclazole residue in sample extracts monitored at ${\lambda}_{max}$ 225nm. Recoveries from fortified samples averaged $95.5{\pm}3.0%\;(n=6),\;87.5{\pm}20.%\;(n=6),\;and\;84.3{\pm}2.8%$ (n=12) for rice grain, straw, and soil, respectively. Detection limit of the method was 0.02 mg/kg for rice grain and soil samples while 0.05 mg/kg for rice straw samples. The proposed method was reproducible and sensitive enough to evaluate the safety of tricyclazole residues in rice grain, straw, and soil.

  • Purpose: This study was to delineate the structural change of neural pathway after sequential motor learning using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Methods: The participants were 16 healthy subjects, which were divided by training (n=8) and control (n=8) group. The task for the training was the Serial Reaction Time Task (SRTT) which was designed by Superlab program. When the 'asterisk' shows up in the 4 partition spaces on the monitor, the subject presses the correct response button as soon as possible. The training group participated in the training program of motor learning with SRTT composed of 24 digits pattern in one hour per daily through 10 days during 2 weeks. Results: In the behavioral results the training group showed significant changes in the increase of response number and the reduction of response time than those of the control group. There was significant difference in the left inferior frontal area in the fractional anisotropy (FA) map of the training group in DTI analysis. Conclusion: Motor sequential learning as like SRTT may be needed to the learning of language and visuospatial processing and may be induced for the experience-dependent structural plasticity during short period.

  • In Sensor Networks, the problem of finding the optimal routing path dynamically, which passes through all terminals or nodes once per each, may come up. Providing a generalized scheme of approximations that can be applied to the kind of problems, and formulating the bounds of the run time and the results of the algorithm made from the scheme, one may evaluate mathematically the routing path formed in a given network. This paper, dealing with Euclidean TSP(Euclidean Travelling Sales Person) that represents such problems, provides the scheme for constructing the approximated Euclidean TSP by parallel computing, and the ground for determining the difference between the approximated Euclidean TSP produced from the scheme and the optimal Euclidean TSP.

  • Currently, the concern about the environment is the issue all over the world, and in particular, carbon emissions of the power plants will not be able to disregard from the respect of generation cost. This paper proposes DR (demand response) as a method of reducing carbon emissions and therefore, carbon emissions cost. There are a number of studies considering DR, and in this paper, the effect of DR is focused on the side of carbon emission reduction effect considering Time-Of-Use (TOU) program, which is one of the most important economic methods in DSM. Demand-price elasticity matrix is used in this paper to model and analyze DR effect. Carbon emissions is calculated by using the carbon emission coefficient provided by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), and generator's input-output characteristic coefficients are also used to estimate carbon emission cost as well as the amount of carbon emissions. Case study is conducted on the RBTS IEEE with six buses. For the TOU program, it is assumed that parameters of time period partition consist of three time periods (peak, flat, off-peak time period).

  • This paper present a method of efficiency circuit design based on directed graph which was represented by tree structure relationship between input and output of nodes. In this paper, we introduce the concept of mathematical analysis based on tree structure which was designed by optimal localized computable circuit. Using the proposed circuit design algorithms in this paper, it is possible to design circuit which directed tree graph have any node number. The proposed method is more effective, regularity and extensibility than former method.

  • Acetanilide is a High Production Volume Chemical, which is produced about 2,300 tons/year in Korea as of 1998 survey. Most is used as an intermediate for synthesis of pharmaceuticals and dyes and the chemical is one of seven chemicals of which human and environmental risks are being assessed by National Institute of Environmental Research under the frame of OECD SIDS program. The chemical is water soluble (4 g/1 at 20$\^{C}$) and readily biodegradable (68.7%). Partition coefficiency (Log Pow) is 1.16 at 23$\^{C}$ so that the chemical has a low potential for bioaccumulation. The acute toxicities of algae, daphnia and fish are not high. The 72 hr-EbC50 of algae is 13.5 mg/1,48 hr-EC50 of daphnia is over 100 mg/1 and 96 hr-LC50 of Oryzias latipes is over 100mg/1. Regarding the exposure, levels in air, water, soil or sediment have not been monitored or estimated so that risk evaluation of acetanilide was not possible. In this study, distribution of the chemical among environmental media was estimated using EQC model based on the chemical-physical properties. In Level I and IIof which the chemical are hypothesized in equilibrium and no transfer through the media, more than 98% of acetanilide are estimated to be distributed in water. However, in Level Ⅲ of which non-equilibrium and intermedia transfer could be occurred, the chemical is estimated to distributed to soil as 51.8% and water as 47.8% as of total amount.

  • In this paper, we propose a new compression method for the edge image by analyzing the characteristics and the distribution of pixel values of the edge image. The pixel values of the edge image have the Gaussian distribution around '0', and most of the pixel values are `0`. By these analyses we suggest the Zero-Based codec that expresses all values in a CU by a single bit flag. Also, in order to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed codec, the block partition and the intra-prediction techniques are proposed by using edge information like the number of each edge direction, the distribution and the amplitude of a major edge direction in the CU. Experimental results show that the proposed codec leads to a slighter distortion in Y domain than that of HEVC, but has far faster processing speed up to 53 times while it maintains the similar image quality compared to HEVC.

  • The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in air and plant were measured every other week at Hankyong University located in Ansung, Kyoung-ki province from July to November of 1999. The predicted PCB concentrations in air derived from measured Morus allba were compared with ambient measurement data. This was necessary to test the possibility of using the two equations incorporating Riederer's and Bacci's bioconcentration factors (BCFs) based on the octanol-air partition coefficient (Ksub/oa/) to predict the air-plant equilibrium of PCBs. Ratios of calculated to measured PCB concentrations in air were 2.4 (1.24~4.36), 2.7 (0.17~7.96) using Riederer's and Bacci's equations, respectively Regression analysis between PCBs calculated by Riederer's equation and PCBs directly measured in air, showed correlation ($R^2$= 0.90). However, slope of regression between calculated and directly measured PCB concentrations was above 1. The results thus suggest that calculated PCBs were overestimated comparing with direct measurements. Bio-monitoring using Morus allba may have possibilities in predicting PCBs concentration in air with a further extension of air-plant equilibrium research.
