  • The left ventricular filling flow is now considered as an indicator which can be used for early diagnosing of cardiovascular diseases. Because the understanding of left ventricular flow physics is critical for this purpose, the downstream flow characteristics of the artificial heart valve are investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In this study, we investigated the wake characteristics of flows passing through three different artificial valves (St.Jude medical bileaflet mechanical valve. Bjork-Shiley monostrut mechanical valve and St.Jude medical Biocor bio valve). The downstream flow field has remarkably altered according to the different valves. SJM MHV has the flow field similar to the pulsating circular jet and BS MHV has oblique pulsating jet. SJM BHV shows the similar flow field of clinical data of normal heart.

  • Micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) has been widely used to measure the velocity of micro flow. Although this micro-PIV method can give accurate 2D instantaneous velocity information of mea-surement plane, it cannot resolve the out of plane component of velocity vectors. Lots of the micro fluidic devices generate three-dimensional flow and 3D measurement of velocity is useful to understand the physics of micro flow phenomena. In this study, we constructed stereoscopic micro-PIV(SMPIV) system and applied this method to the impinging micro jet flow. The results show that this method can produce accu-rate 3D reconstruction of micro jet flow.

  • Various plasma instabilities driven by the ion beams have been proposed in order to explain the broadband electrostatic noise (BEN) in the earth's geomagnetic tail. Ion acoustic, ion-ion two stream, and electron acoustic instabilities have been proposed. Here we consider a theoretical investigation of the generation of BEN by cold streaming ion beams in the earth's magnetotail. Linear theory analysis and particle simulation studies for the plasma sheet, which consists of warm electrons and ions as well as cold streaming ion beams, have been done. Both beam-ion acoustic and ion-ion two stream instabilities easily occur when the beam and warm electron temperature ratio, $T_b/T_e$ is small enough. The numerical simulation results confirm the existence of broadband electrostatic noise whose frequency is ranged from $\omega$=0 to $\omega$$\omega_{pe}$.

  • We studied the physical properties of Ni-Zn ferrites by adding different chemicals such as $SO_4$, Cl, and $NO_3$. Specimens were prepared by the coprecipitation method and sintered at temperatures $950^{\circ}C,\;1,150^{\circ}C,\;and\;1,350^{\circ}C$, respectively. X-ray diffractions showed a spinel structure and the optical microscopy revealed grain size of 0.3 to 0.6 ${\mu}m$. The optimum sintering temperature to obtain fine, sintered microstructure depended on the additive : Cl and $NO_3\;at\;950^{\circ}C\;and\;SO_4\;at\;1,150^{\circ}C$. According to particle size analysis, higher magnetic permeability and magnetization value were observed with Cl and $NO_3\;than\;SO_4$. As sintering temperature was raised from $950^{\circ}C$ to $1,350^{\circ}C$, the average grain diameter, initial permeability and the magnetic moment also increased.

  • Massive gravity provides a natural solution for the dark energy problem of cosmology and is also a candidate for resolving the dark matter problem. I demonstrate that, assuming reasonable scaling relations, massive gravity can provide for Milgrom’s law of gravity (or “modified Newtonian dynamics”) which is known to remove the need for particle dark matter from galactic dynamics. Milgrom’s law comes with a characteristic acceleration, Milgrom’s constant, which is observationally constrained to a0 ≈ 1.1 × 10−10 ms−2 . In the derivation presented here, this constant arises naturally from the cosmologically required mass of gravitons like , with Λ, H0, and ΩΛ being the cosmological constant, the Hubble constant, and the third cosmological parameter, respectively. My derivation suggests that massive gravity could be the mechanism behind both, dark matter and dark energy.

  • We aim to investigate inflow history of matters that fall into the satellite systems around a dwarf galaxy in Lambda-Cold Dark Matter model. Each satellite system has unique properties because all satellite systems have different mass inflow history by environments and/or the events such as cosmic reionization and merging with other halos. To trace mass inflow history of the satellite systems, we perform three different cosmological zoom simulations whose galaxy mass is ${\sim}10^{10}M_{sun}$. Each initial zoom simulation covers a cubic box of $1Mpc/h^3$ with 17 million particles. Particle mass for dark matter (DM) and gas components is $M_{DM}=4.1{\times}10^3M_{sun}$ and $M_{gas}=7.9{\times}10^2M_{sun}$, respectively. Thus, each satellite system is resolved with more than hundreds - thousands of particles. We analyze the influence of the gravitational interaction with host galaxy, baryonic matter inflow by various cooling mechanisms, and merging events with other halos on the mass inflow history of satellite systems.

  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes were fabricated using nano-sized silver powders as a bonding material. The effects of powder size on the field emission properties for the CNT cathode were investigated The better emission properties of CNT cathodes using smaller particles are due to a low sintering temperature of the bonding materials.

  • Ultrafine cobalt ferrite particles have been synthesized using a microemulsion method. All peaks of X-ray diffranction patterns are fairly broad but correspond to a cubic spinel structure with the lattice constant 8.39$\AA$. The coercivity measureed at 5K is 15.1 kOe. The maximal magnetization measured at 5 and 300 K are 13.2 and 10.7 emu/g, respectively. The particles behave ferrimagnetically at 5 K but superparamagnetically at 300K. Superparamagnetic behavior of the particles at room temperature was confirmed by the conincidence of the M vs. H/T at different temperatures and the Mossbauer spectrum.

  • The origin of the galaxies represents an important focus of current cosmological research, both observational and theoretical. Its resolution involves a comprehensive understanding of star formation and evolution, galaxy dynamics, supermassive black holes, and the cosmology of the very early universe. In this paper, I will review our current understanding of galaxy formation and review some of the challenges that lie ahead. Specific issues that I address include the galaxy luminosity function, feedback by supernovae and by AGN, and downsizing. I argue that current evidence favours two distinct modes of star formation in the early universe, in order to account for the origin of disk and massive spheroidal galaxies. However perhaps the most urgent need is for a robust theory of star formation.
