The fundamental mechanism of a dispersed two-phase flow was investigated. Experiments were carried out to understand how the particles behaves under the influence of the particle size, shape, metamorphoses (bubble) and buoyancy of a single particle which is ascending from the standstill water. Two CCD cameras were employed for image processing of the behavior of the particles and the surrounding flow, which was interpreted with the technique of correlation PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and PTV (Particle Tracking Veloci- metry), respectively The experimental results showed that the large density difference bet- ween a particle and water caused high relative velocity and induced zigzag motion of the particle. Furthermore, the turbulence intensity of a bubble was about twice the case of the spherical solid particle of similar diameter.
Understanding particle-laden flow around cylindrical bodies is essential for the better design of various applications such as filters. In this study, laminar flows around two tandem cylinders and the motions of particles in the flow are numerically investigated at low Reynolds numbers. We aim to reveal the effects of the spacing between cylinders, Reynolds number and particle Stokes number on the characteristics of particle trajectories. When the cylinders are placed close, the unsteady flow inside the inter-cylinder gap at Re = 100 shows a considerable modification. However, the steady recirculation flow in the wake at Re = 10 and 40 shows an insignificant change. The change in the flow structure leads to the variation of particle dispersion pattern, particularly of small Stokes number particles. However, the dispersion of particles with a large Stokes number is hardly affected by the flow structure. As a result, few particles are observed in the cylinder gap regardless of the cylinder spacing and the Reynolds number. The deposition efficiency of the upstream cylinder shows no difference from that of a single cylinder, increasing as the Stokes number increases. However, the deposition on the downstream cylinder is found only at Re = 100 with large spacing. At this time, the deposition efficiency is generally small compared to that of an upstream cylinder, and the deposition location is also changed with no deposited particles near the stagnation point.
High viscosity carbon black dispersions are used in various industrial fields such as color cosmetics, rubber, tire, plastic and color filter ink. However, carbon black particles are unstable to heat due to inherent characteristics, and it is very difficult to keep the quality of the product constant due to agglomeration of particles. In general, particle size analysis is performed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) during the dispersion process in order to select the optimum dispersant in the carbon black dispersion process. However, the existing low viscosity analysis provides reproducible particle distribution analysis results, but it is difficult to select the optimum dispersant because it is difficult to analyze the reproducible particle distribution at high viscosity. In this study, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) analysis methods were compared for reproducible particle size analysis of high viscosity carbon black. First, the stability of carbon black dispersion was investigated by particle size analysis by DLS and AsFlFFF according to milling time, and the validity of analytical method for the selection of the optimum dispersant useful for carbon black dispersion was confirmed. The correlation between color and particle size of particles in high viscosity carbon black dispersion was investigated by using colorimeter. The particle size distribution from AsFlFFF was consistent with the colorimetric results. As a result, the correlation between AsFlFFF and colorimetric results confirmed the possibility of a strong analytical method for determining the appropriate dispersant and milling time in high viscosity carbon black dispersions. In addition, for nanoparticles with relatively broad particle size distributions such as carbon black, AsFlFFF has been found to provide a more accurate particle size distribution than DLS. This is because AsFlFFF, unlike DLS, can analyze each fraction by separating particles by size.
The dispersion of Lagrangian fluid particles in a turbulent channel flow is studied by a direct numerical simulation. Four points Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous direction and Chebyshev polynomials in the inhomogeneous direction is adopted by assesing the acceleration of fluid particles. In order to characterize the inhomogeneous Lagrangian statistics, accurate single particle Lagrangian statistics are obtained along the wall normal direction. Integral time scales of Lagrangian velocity can be normalized by Eulerian mean shear stresses.

The pressure drop characteristics of air particle flow in a powder transport piping system were analyzed in this study. The pressure drop characteristics of air particle flow in the piping system have not well understood due to the complexibility of particle motion mechanism. Particles or powders suspended in the air flow cause the increase of the pressure drop and affect directly transport efficiency. In this study, the pressure drop in a powder transport piping system was analyzed with interactions of air flow and particle motion in straight and curved pipes. The total pressure drop increased with pipe length, mixture ratio, and friction factor of particles because of increased friction loss of air and particles in the piping system. For the coal powders of $74{\mu}msize$ and powder-to-air mass mixture ratio of 0.667, the total pressure drop under the consideration of powders and air flow was calculated as much as 30% higher than that air flow only.
The OPS (Optical Particle Sensor) using light scattering from the particles (real-time measurement without physical contact to the particles) can be used for cleanroom or atmospheric environment monitoring. For particles smaller than 300 nm, the detection efficiency becomes lower as scattered light decreases with particle size. To obtain higher detection efficiency with small particles, the flow field in particle chamber and the detection volume should be designed optimally to achieve maximum scattered light from the particles. In this study, a commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT was used to simulate the gas flow field and particle trajectories with various optical chamber designs for 300 nm PSL particle. For estimation of laser viewing volume, we used a commercial computational optical design program ZEMAX. The results will be a great help in the development of OPS which can measure small particles with higher detection efficiency.

A direct contact heat exchanger using particle-suspended gas as a heat transfer medium is analyzed with an extended emphasis on the radiation, i. e., considering the radiation by both gas and particles. While the Runge-Kutta method is used for a numerical analysis of the momentum and energy equations, the finite volume method is utilized to solve the radiative transfer equation. Present study shows a notable effect by the gas radiation in addition to the particle radiation, especially when changing the chamber length as well as the gas and particle mass flow rate. When the gas and particle mass flow rate is raised, the gas temperature in the particle heater still increases as the gas absorption coefficient increases, which is different from the results for the small scale heat exchanger.

A numerical simulation for particle collection efficiency in a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been performed. Method of characteristics and finite differencing method (MOC-FDM) were employed to obtain electric field and space charge density, and lattice boltzmann method (LBM) was used to predict the Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow according to the ion convection. Large eddy simulation (LES) was considered for turbulent flow and particle simulation was performed by discrete element method (DEM) which considered field charging, electric force, drag force and wall-collision. One way coupling from FDM to LBM was used with small and low density particle assumption. When the charged particle collided with the collecting plate, particle-wall collision was calculated for re-entertainment effect and the effect of gravity force was considered.
Recent studies proved turbulent flow properties in high-rise building models differ from those in low-rise building models by comparing turbulent statistics. Although it is important to understand the flow characteristics within and above high-rise building models in the study of urban environment, it is still unknown and under investigation. For this reason, we performed wind tunnel experiment using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to investigate and identify the turbulent flow properties and characteristic flow patterns in high-rise building models. In particular, we focus on instantaneous flow field near the canopy and extracted flow field when homogeneous flow field were observed. As a result, six characteristic flow patterns were identified and the relationship between these flow patterns and turbulent organized structure were shown.

The purpose of this research is to model numerically the turbulent gas-particle flows in a rectangular chamber using Eulerian-Eulerian Method. A computer code using the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-Ap$ two-phase turbulence model is developed for the numerical study. This code and the Eulerian multiphase model in FLUENT were used for the numerical simulations of the two-phase flow in a rectangular chamber. The numerical results calculated by the two different turbulent gas-particle codes have shown that the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-Ap$ model results in a stronger diffusion of the flow momentum in the gas-particle turbulence interaction than the Eulerian multiphase model in FLUENT.
