  • In this paper, durability evaluation and surface damage mechanism were investigated through solid particle erosion (SPE) test after applying hot-dip aluminizing (HDA) technology for the purpose of maintenance of marine economizer tube. Damaged surface shape was analyzed using SEM and 3D microscope. Compositional changes and microstructure of the HDA layer were analyzed through EDS and XRD. Durability was evaluated by analyzing weight loss and surface damage depth after SPE. HDA was confirmed to have a two-layer structure of Al and Al5Fe2. HDA+HT was made into a single alloy layer of Al5Fe2 by diffusion treatment. In the microstructure of HDA+HT, void and crack defect were induced during the crystal phase transformation process. The SPE damage mechanism depends on material properties. Plastic deformation occurred in the substrate and HDA due to ductility, whereas weight loss due to brittleness occurred significantly in HDA+HT. As a result, the substrate and HDA showed better SPE resistance than HDA+HT.

  • Surge overflow may cause damage on earthen levees. Levee strengthened on the levee crest and landward-side slope can provide protection against the erosion damage induced by surge overflow. In this paper, surge overflow of a roller compacted concrete RCC strengthened levee was studied in a purely Lagrangian and meshless approach, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. After verifying the developed model with analytical solution and comparing the results with full-scale experimental data, the roughness and erosion parameters were calibrated. The water thickness, flow velocity, and erosion depth at crest, landward-side slope and toe were calculated. The characteristics of flow hydraulics and erosion on the RCC strengthened levee are given. The results indicate that the RCC strengthened levee can resist erosion damage for a long period.

  • In this study, erosion tests and erosion-corrosion tests of Al5083-H321 aluminum alloy were conducted at various flow rates in seawater. The erosion tests were conducted at a flow rate of 0 to 20 m/s, and erosion-corrosion tests were performed by potentiodynamic polarization method at the same flow rate. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion test was conducted by surface analysis. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion-corrosion test was performed by Tafel extrapolation and surface analysis. The results of the surface analysis after the erosion test showed that surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. In particular, intermetallic particles were separated due to the breakdown of the oxide film at 10 m/s or more. In the erosion-corrosion test, the corrosion current density increased as the flow rate increased. Additionally, the surface analysis showed that surface damage occurred in a vortex shape and the width of the surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. Moreover, damage at 0 m/s, proceeded in a depth direction due to the growth of pitting corrosion, and the damaged area tended to increase due to acceleration of the intermetallic particle loss by the fluid impact.

  • In recent years, soil erosion has come to be regarded as an essential environmental problem in human life. Soil erosion causes various on- and off-site problems such as ecosystem destruction, decreased agricultural productivity, increased riverbed deposition, and deterioration of water quality in streams. To solve these problems caused by soil erosion, it is necessary to quantify where, when, how much soil erosion occurs. Empirical erosion models such as the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) family models have been widely used to make spatially distributed soil erosion vulnerability maps. Even if the models detect vulnerable sites relatively well by utilizing big data related to climate, geography, geology, land use, etc. within study domains, they do not adequately describe the physical process of soil erosion on the ground surface caused by rainfall or overland flow. In other words, such models remain powerful tools to distinguish erosion-prone areas at the macro scale but physics-based models are necessary to better analyze soil erosion and deposition and eroded particle transport. In this study, the physics-based Surface Soil Erosion Model (SSEM) was upgraded based on field survey information to produce sediment yield at the watershed scale. The modified model (hereafter MoSE) adopted new algorithms on rainfall kinematic energy and surface flow transport capacity to simulate soil erosion more reliably. For model validation, we applied the model to the Doam dam watershed in Gangwon-do and compared the simulation results with the USLE outputs. The results showed that the revised physics-based soil erosion model provided more improved and reliable simulation results than the USLE in terms of the spatial distribution of soil erosion and deposition.

  • Soil erosion can cause scouring and failures of underwater structures, therefore, various soil improvement techniques are used to increase the soil erosion resistance. The microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) method is proposed to increase the erosion resistance, however, there are only limited experimental and numerical studies on the use of MICP treatment for improvement of surface erosion resistance. Therefore, this study investigates the improvement in surface erosion resistance of sands by MICP through laboratory experiments and numerical modeling. The surface erosion behaviors of coarse sands with various calcium carbonate contents were first investigated via the erosion function apparatus (EFA). The test results showed that MICP treatment increased the overall erosion resistance, and the contribution of the precipitated calcium carbonate to the erosion resistance and critical shear stress was quantified in relation to the calcium carbonate contents. Further, these surface erosion processes occurring in the EFA test were simulated through the coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) with the cohesion bonding model to reflect the mineral precipitation effect. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results, and the developed CFD-DEM model with the cohesion bonding model well predicted the critical shear stress of MICP-treated sand. This work demonstrates that the MICP treatment is effective in improving soil erosion resistance, and the coupled CFD-DEM with a bonding model is a useful and promising tool to analyze the soil erosion behavior for MICP-treated sand at a particle scale.

The cosine law of emission을 이용하여 계산 하였다.

  • Abrasive Jet Micromachining (AJM) is a process that uses high pressure air with micron-sized particles to erode a substrate. It has been considered as the most economic and appropriate technique to pattern glass surfaces for the flat panel applications. To accelerate the industrialization of AJM, it is necessary to understand the erosion mechanisms thoroughly. Thus, this paper introduces a new method to model the erosion mechanism in AJM. The model is developed by using the concept of the accumulation of the microdeformation caused by each particle. And this paper proposes the model added the effects of second impact. The developed model is used to simulate the erosion profile, and is compared with the model considered only first impact. It can be concluded that the proposed model predicts the erosion profile more accurately.

  • This report is researched on the cause and mechanism of soil erosion in comparison among Kwangnung, Mt. Kaya, Mt. Chili, and Mt. Soorak by physical and chemical analyses of their for- est soils. Clay, silt, and fine sand of Mt. Soorak are far less than those of Mt. Chili, Mt. Kaya, and Kwangnung area while coarse sand is very high level. The clay ratio of soil at Mt. Soorak is the most high level in comparison with that of other area. Denudation at Mt. Soorak, therefore, is cause of erosion by the result of transportation of soil particles. The eroding velocity increase for larger particle size and stronger cohesion between soil particles. Very fine sand, silt, and clay can be present in suspension near the bottom and the size of the particles in suspension depends upon the velocity of the current near the bottom and the roughness of the bottom. • Catchments soil erosion, one of the most serious problems in the mountainous environment of the world, consists of a complex phenomenon involving the detachment of individual soil particles from the soil mass and their transport, storage and overland flow of rainfall, and infiltration. Sediment size distribution during erosion processes appear to depend on many factors such as rainfall characteristics, vegetation cover, hydraulic flow, soil properties and slope. This study involved laboratory flume experiments carried out under simulated rainfall in a 3.0 m long ${\times}$ 0.8 m wide ${\times}$ 0.7 m deep flume, set at $17^{\circ}$ slope. Five experimental cases, consisting of twelve experiments using three different sediments with two different rainfall conditions, are reported. The experiments consisted of detailed observations of particle size distribution of the out-flow sediment. Sediment water mixture out-flow hydrograph and sediment mass out-flow rate over time, moisture profiles at different points within the soil domain, and seepage outflow were also reported. Moisture profiles, seepage outflow, and movement of overland flow were clearly found to be controlled by water retention function and hydraulic function of the soil. The difference of grain size distribution of original soil bed and the out-flow sediment was found to be insignificant in the cases of uniform sediment used experiments. However, in the cases of non-uniform sediment used experiments the outflow sediment was found to be coarser than the original soil domain. The results indicated that the sediment transport mechanism is the combination of particle segregation, suspension/saltation and rolling along the travel distance.
