A breakwater has always been an ideal option to prevent shoreline erosion due to wave action as well as to maintain the tranquility in the lagoon area. The effects of the impinging wave on the structure could be analyzed and evaluated by several physical and numerical methods. An alternate approach to the numerical methods in the prediction of performance of a breakwater is Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. In the recent decade many researchers have implemented several Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the prediction of performance, stability number and scour of breakwaters. This paper is a comprehensive review which serves as a guide to the current state of the art knowledge in application of soft computing techniques in breakwaters. This study aims to provide a detailed review of different soft computing techniques used in the prediction of performance of different breakwaters considering various combinations of input and response variables.

The performance of ac plasma display panels (PDP) is influenced strongly by the surface glow discharge characteristics on the MgO thin films. This paper deals with the surface glow discharge characteristics and some physical properties of MgO thin films prepared by reactive RF planar unbalanced magnetron sputtering in connection with ac PDP. The samples prepared with dc bias voltage of -10V showed lower discharge voltage and lower erosion rate byion bombardment than those samples prepared by conventional magnetron sputtering or E-beam evaporation. The main factor that improves the discharge characteristics by bias voltage is considered to be due to the morphology changes or crystal structure of the MgO thin film by ion bombardement during deposition process.
This study was carried out to obtain basic data on the kinds of aquatic insects and their living conditions in the mountain stream. The investigation was done in Bongmyung stream. Experimental Forest, Kangwon National University on aquatic insects, anions and river-bed materials. The results are as follows. 1. At every plot surveyed, diversity index, richness index and evenness index of aquatic insects appeared higher at upper stream than at lower stream in erosion control dam. 2. Anion concentrations were almost the same in plots A, B, C, D and E, but plot F at the lower stream showed 1.5 to 89 times higher concentration than the others. 3. In river-bed materials analysed, particle diameter was bigger at the upper stream than at the lower stream. At the down stream of erosion control dam showed high pebble composition ratio. 4. The number of aquatic insects showed the negative relation with the anion concentration and the positive one with the size of river-bed materials. Especially, they were affected much by the distribution chart of boulder.
We measured the temperature of target surface inducing by various physical phenomenon on magnetron sputtering target and confirmed the possibilities if the temperature distribution could affect plasma and deposited thin film. The target of magnetron sputtering has two types: round type and rectangular type. In a rectangular target, the concentrated discharge area by corner effect by magnetic field and non-uniform erosion of target are generated. And we found the generation of non-uniform temperature distribution on the target surface from this. This area was $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ higher than non-sputtering area. And if particles are generated during sputtering process, they were $20^{\circ}C$ higher than the area where is higher than non-sputtering area. These effects result in non-uniformity of thin films, crack of ceramic target, and shortening target life by non-uniform erosion.
In-situ capping is a method to stabilize contaminated sediments by isolation. Few researches on the in-situ capping have been performed, although the engineering approach is still required to prevent the release of contaminants. In this study, hydraulic model test were conducted by using a wave generator to observe the change of cap thickness which is important factor in design of capping. Sands with particle size between 0.075 to 2 mm as capping materials were used to observe the change of capping thickness by waves. The experimental results show that the surface of capping materials is similar to wave form. The more wave height increases, the more erosion of capping materials increases.
A number of piping components in the secondary system of nuclear power plants (NPPs) are exposed to aging mechanisms, such as flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC), cavitation, flashing, solid particle erosion, and liquid droplet impingement erosion. Those mechanisms may lead to thinning, leaking, or rupture of the components. Due to the pipe ruptures caused by wall thinning in Surry unit 2 in the USA in 1986 and Mihama unit 3 in Japan in 1994, pipe wall thinning management has emerged as one of the most important issues in the nuclear industry. To manage pipe wall thinning, a foreign program has been utilized for NPPs in Korea since 1996. As our experience and knowledge of pipe wall thinning management have accumulated, our program needs to reflect our experience, requests from users, and the result of recent experiments using Flow Accelerated Corrosion Testing System (FACTS). FACTS is the empirical experimental facility developed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) for tests. Accordingly, KEPCO-E&C developed a 3D-based pipe wall thinning management program called ToSPACE in 2016. This paper describes a comparison between the FAC analysis results using ToSPACE and the experimental results using FACTS to verify their applicability to pipe wall thinning management in NPPs.

In order to understand the efficacy of submerged breakwater constructed for the beach protection, laboratory experiments were carried out by observing the characteristics of flow around a single shore-parallel submerged breakwater. The velocity field near the shoreline was measured by utilizing the LSPIV (Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry) technique, and mean surface and wave height distributions were observed around the submerged breakwater, according to various combinations of incident waves and submerged breakwaters. In this experiment, it was found that the mean flow pattern behind the submerged breakwater was determined by the balance among the gradients of mean water surface and excess wave-momentum flux (i.e., radiation stress tensors) which interact with the wave-induced current developed by the gradients on the rear and the side of the submerged breakwater. The divergent and convergent flow patterns behind the submerged breakwater (i.e., accretion and erosion response) of the numerical study of Ranasinghe et al.(2010) were observed in the measured velocity distributions, and their empirical formula mostly agreed with the experimental results. However, for some cases in this experiment, it was difficult to say that the flow pattern was one of them and was agreed with the empirical formula.

Recently, rudder erosion due to cavitation has been frequently reported on a semi-spade rudder of a high-speed large ship. This problem raises economic and safety issues when operating ships. The semi-spade rudders have a gap between the horn/pintle and the movable wing part. Due to this gap, a discontinuous surface, cavitation phenomenon arises and results in unresolved problems such as rudder erosion. In this study, we made a rudder model for 2-D experiments using the NACA0020 and also manufactured gap flow blocking devices to insert to the gap of the model. In order to study the gap flow characteristics at various rudder deflection angles($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$) and the effect of the gap flow blocking devices, we carried out the velocity measurements using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techniques and cavitation observation using high speed camera in Seoul National University cavitation tunnel. To observe the gap cavitation on a semi-spade rudder, we slowly lowered the inside pressure of the cavitation tunnel until cavitation occurred near the gap and then captured it using high-speed camera with the frame rate of 4300 fps(frame per second). During this procedure, cavitation numbers and the generated location were recorded, and these experimental data were compared with CFD results calculated by commercial code, Fluent. When we use gap flow blocking device to block the gap, it showed a different flow character compared with previous observation without the device. With the device blocking the gap, the flow velocity increases on the suction side, while it decreases on the pressure side. Therefore, we can conclude that the gap flow blocking device results in a high lift-force effect. And we can also observe that the cavitation inception is delayed.
In this study, filter conditions by difference in grading between core material and filter material used for dam construction was applied as evaluation condition for surrounding ground conditions near excavation site in a bid to identify the risk of land subsidence resulting from the erosion of soil particles. To that end, filter conditions proposed for the test was evaluated and the risk of land subsidence depending on grain size conditions was also evaluated using the filter conditions developed by COE. Consequently, evaluation diagram that can be used to determine the risk of land subsidence using grain size conditions obtained from ground investigation data was developed, which is expected to help evaluate the possibility of land subsidence depending on changes to the stratum. To simulate the particle flow process, PFC3D program was used. It's not only intended to determine the land subsidence pattern caused by falling ground water level but also predict and evaluate the land subsidence caused by soil erosion using grain size condition which can be verified by numerical analysis approach.

The occurrence of soil erosions in Korea is mostly driven by flowing water which has a close relationship with rainfalls. The soil eroded by rainfalls flows into and deposits in the river and it polluted the water resources and making the rivers become difficult to be managed. Recently, the frequency of heavy rainfall events that are more than 30 mm/hr has been increasing in Korea due to the influence of climate change, which creating a favourable condition for the occurrence of soil erosion within a short time. In this study, we proposed a method to estimate the distribution of rainfall intensity and to calculate the energy produced by a single rainfall event using the cumulative distribution function that take into account of the physical characteristics of rainfall. The raindrops kinetic energy estimated by the proposed method are compared with the measured data from the previous studies and it is noticed that the raindrops kinetic energy estimated by the rainfall intensity variation is very similar to the results concluded from the previous studies. In order to develop an equation for estimating rainfall kinetic energy, rainfall particle size data measured at a rainfall intensity of 0.254~152.4 mm/hr were used. The rainfall kinetic energy estimated by applying the cumulative distribution function tended to increase in the form of a power function in the relation of rainfall intensity. Based on the equation obtained from this relationship, the rainfall kinetic energy of 1~80 mm/hr rainfall intensity was estimated to be $0.03{\sim}48.26Jm^{-2}mm^{-1}$. Based on the relationship between rainfall intensity and rainfall energy, rainfall kinetic energy equation is proposed as a power function form and it is expected that it can be used in the design of short-term operated facility such as the sizing of sedimentation basin that requires prediction of soil loss by a single rainfall event.
