The phenomena of two-phase suspension flows appear widely in nature and industrial processes. Hence, it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of the gas-solid two-phase flows. In the present study, the numerical simulation has been approached by utilizing the Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology for describing the characteristics of the fluid and particulate phases in a vertical pipe and a 90°square-sectioned bend. The continuous phase(gas phase) is described by the Eulerian formulation and a κ-ε turbulence model is employed to find mean and turbulent properties of the gas phase. The particle properties(velocity and trajectory) are then described by a Lagrangian approach and computed using the mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating velocity of the gas phase. The predictions are compared with measurements by laser-Doppler velocimeter for the validation. As a result, the calculated results show good agreements.

This study was aimed at estimation of gas-particle partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in ambient air. The samples were collected at urban site in Japan from March 2002 to January 2003. The concentration of total PCBs (from 4 CB to 10 CB) and TEQ (Toxic equivalent) ranged from 62 to $247\;pg/m^3$ and from 2 to $14\;fgTEQ/m^3 $, respectively. The average contribution $(\%)$ of gas phase to total PCBs concentration was above $80\%$, which suggests that in the atmosphere PCBs predominantly existed in the gas phase. The weak correlations between total PCBs concentration and temperature was found. However this result was due to a typhoon during summer and raining during sampling period. The gas-particle partition coefficient (Kp) was obtained as a function of temperature. The partition ratio of gaseous and particulate phase PCBs can be estimated for an arbitrary temperature. The plot of gas/particle partition coefficient (log Kp) vs. sub-cooled liquid vapor pressure $(log\;P_L)$ had reasonable correlations for individual samples but the slope varied among the samples (coefficients of determination for log Kp versus log $P_L$ plot were> 0.76 $(p<0.0001)$, except for 3 samples). As a result, the variations in the slope among the sampling period may be due to change of temperature, raining during sampling period and wind in this study.

Polyurethane foam-disk passive air samplers (PAS) were deployed in a southern area of Korea for three months. The target compounds were 12 coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The congener profiles measured in this study were the same as those in ambient air and emission gas from the incinerator. A gradient of the total PCBs in different regions (industrial>residential>rural) was observed, suggesting the industrial complex may be an important source of coplanar PCBs. In general, only gas-phase compounds are mainly sequestrated by PAS. In order to estimate the concentration of particle-phase PCBs, a gas/particle partition model was used. A combined result (gas+particle-phase PCBs) was compared with previous results, indicating that the level of coplanar PCBs in our study area is comparable to those in other urban sites in the world. The validation of this method for estimating the total concentration is required through additional backup studies.

We designed the hot wind tunnel to reproduce the conditions of utility boiler and carried out its performance test, in order to investigate the particulate two-phase flow behaviour, the fouling and heat transfer characteristics to the heat exchanger. The hot wind tunnel introduces the control system to control the temperature in the test section. The particle is injected into the hot gas stream. The fouling probe (cylindrical tube) is positioned normal to the particulate gas-particle two-phase flow and cooled by the air. The temperature of gas and cooling air, and temperature in the fouling probe are measured as a function of time, giving the local and averaged heat transfer and fouling factor. The shape of particulate deposition adhered to the fouling probe is also observed.
First, methods of numerical analysis of gas-particle flows is classified into micro, meso and macro scale approaches based on the concept of multi-scale mechanics. Next, the explanation moves on to discrete particle simulation where motion of individual particles is calculated numerically using the Newtonian equations of motion. The author focuses on the cases where particle-to-particle interaction has significant effects on the phenomena. Concerning the particle-to-particle interaction, two cases are considered: the one is collision-dominated flows and the other is the contact-dominated flows. To treat this interaction mathematically, techniques named DEM(Distinct Element Method) or DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) have been developed DEM, which has been developed in the field of soil mechanics, is useful for the contact -dominated flows and DSMC method, developed in molecular gas flows, is for the collision-dominated flows. Combining DEM or DSMC with CFD (computer fluid dynamics), the discrete particle simulation becomes a more practical tool for industrial flows because not only the particle-particle interaction but particle-fluid interaction can be handled. As examples of simulations, various results are shown, such as hopper flows, particle segregation phenomena, particle mixing in a rotating drum, dense phase pneumatic conveying, spouted bed, dense phase fluidized bed, fast circulating fluidized bed and so on.
The geometry of popular wave plate type mist eliminator for the wet flue gas desulfurization process was improved, fabricated, and experimentally evaluated. A Mist eliminator is a type of inertial particle collector which collection efficiency is proportional to the velocity of the gas phase. However, as the amount of re-entrainment is also proportional to the gas phase velocity, there is a limitation for the gas phase flow rate. Re-entrainment is one of the most important issues in a mist eliminator and is likely to occur as the input of the liquid phase and flow rate of the gas phase increase. In order to resolve this problem, the projection angle of the improved mist eliminator is set to 30° from the conventional one while maintaining the cross-section. With low flow rate conditions, the modified mist eliminator showed a similar pressure drop and overall collection efficiency. However, with conditions in which re-entrainment is obviously occurring, the modified mist eliminator showed better performance in draining droplets than the conventional one. As a result, the modified mist eliminator showed higher overall collection efficiency.
The present study conducted computational simulation for multiphase flow in the flame spray coating process with commercially available Ni-Cr powders. The flows in a flame spray gun is characterized by very complex phenomena including combustion, turbulent flows, and convective and radiative heat transfer. In this study, we used a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of Fluent (ver. 6.3.26) to predict gas dynamics involving combustion, gas and particle temperature distributions, and multi-dimensional particle trajectories with the use of the discrete phase model (DPM). We also examined the effect of particle size on the flame spray process. It was found that particle velocity and gas temperature decreased rapidly in the radial direction, and they were substantially affected by the particle size.

Background: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generated in petrochemical complexes, can spread to residential areas and affect the health of residents. Although harmful PAHs are mainly present in particle phase, gas phase PAHs can generate stronger toxic substances through photochemical reaction. Therefore, the risk assessment for PAHs around the petrochemical complex should consider both particle and gas phase concentrations. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the concentration characteristics of particle and gas phase PAHs by season in residential areas around petrochemical complexes, and to assess the risk of PAHs. Methods: Samples were collected for 7 days by seasons in 2014~2015 using a high volume air sampler. Particle and gas phase PAHs were sampled using quartz filter and polyurethane foam, respectively, analyzed by GC-MS. Chronic toxicity and probabilistic risk assessment were performed on 14 PAHs. For chronic toxicity risk assessment, inhalation unit risk was used. Monte-Carlo simulation was performed for probabilistic risk assessment using the mean and standard deviation of measured PAHs. Results: The concentration of particle total PAHs was highest in autumn. The gas phase concentration was highest in autumn. The average gas phase distribution ratio of low molecular weight PAHs composed of 2~3 benzene rings was 85%. The average of the medium molecular weight composed of 4 benzene rings was 53%, and the average of the high molecular weight composed of 5 or more benzene rings was 9%. In the chronic toxicity risk assessment, 7 of the 14 PAHs exceeded the excess carcinogenic risk of 1.00×10-6. In the Monte-Carlo simulation, Benzo[a]pyrene had the highest probability of exceeding 1.00×10-6, which was 100%. Conclusions: The concentration of PAHs in the residential area around the petrochemical complex exceeded the standard, and the excess carcinogenic risk was evaluated to be high. Therefore, it is necessary to manage the air environment around the petrochemical complex.

Gas-particle two phase flow and heat transfer in a cavity receiving thermal radiation through selectively transparent walls have been analyzed by a finite difference method. Particles injected from the upper hole of the cavity are accelerated downward by gravity and exit through the lower hole while they absorb, emit and scatter the incident thermal radiation. Gas phase is heated through convection heat transfer from particles, and consequently buoyancy induced flow field is formed. Two-equation model with two-way coupling is adopted and interaction terms are treated as sources by PSI-Cell method. For the particulate phase, Lagrangian method is employed to describe velocities and temperatures of particles. As thermal radiation is incident upon horizontally, radiative heat transfer in the vertical direction is assumed negligible and two-flux model is used for the solution of radiative heat flus. Gas phase velocity and temperature distributions, and particle trajectories, velocities and temperatures are presented. The effects of particle inlet condition, particle size, injection velocity and particle mass rate are mainly investigated.

A novel two-phase PIV algorithm using a single camera has been proposed, which introduces a method of image-separation into respective phase images, and is applied to freely rising single bubble. Gas bubble, tracer particle and background each have different gray intensity ranges on the same image frame when reflection and dispersion in the phase interface are intrinsically eliminated by optical filters and fluorescent material. Further, the signals of the two phases do not interfere with each other. Gas phase velocities are obtained from the separated bubble image by applying the two-frame PTV. On the other hand, liquid phase velocities are obtained from the tracer particle image by applying the cross-correlation algorithm. Moreover, in order to increase the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the cross-correlation of tracer particle image, image enhancement is employed.
