  • In pneumatic reactor, hydrodynamic relation between gas and solid is important and particle size has a significant effect on this relation. In this reason, we analyzed drying and calcine process with a corrected model by considering the effect of the particle size distribution(PSD) with different seven particle groups by particle size.

  • Characteristics of the pressure drop in an expanded bed have been compared to those in a packed bed for numerical study of the interphase drag in gas-particle flows. A numerical analysis of the pressure drop by the particle drag has been conducted according to the tube-to-particle diameter ratios and Reynolds numbers for comparison. As the tube-to-particle diameter ratios increase at the same Reynolds number, the pressure drop tends to converge. It has been confirmed that characteristics of the pressure drop in the expanded bed are similar to those in the packed bed.

  • The Holographic Particle Velocimetry system can be a promising optical tool for the measurements of three dimensional particle velocities. In this research, the optical system for double pulse holographic recording and reconstruction of particle images was developed. Validation experiments for the developed system were conducted measuring the velocities of glass beads on a rotating disk. Uncertainty analysis was performed to identify the sources of all relevant errors and to evaluate their magnitude. The measurement results of distance between glass beads, size, and velocities of them using holographic method compared reasonalbly well with the known values within acceptable range of errors.

  • Despite the increasing need of nanometer-scale accuracy in abrasive machining using ultrasmall particles such as abrasive jet and chemical mechanical polishing(CMP), the process mechanism is still unknown. Based on the background, research on the effects of various process parameters on the machined surface at abrasive machining was motivated and performed by using finite element analysis where the effect of slurry fluid flow involved. The effect of particle shape on the machined surface during particle-surface collision was discussed in this paper. The results from FEA simulation revealed that any damage or defect generation on machined surface by the impact may occur only if the particle has enough impact energy. Therefore, it could be concluded that generation of the defects and damage on the wafer surface after CMP process was mainly due to direct contact of the 3 bodies, i.e., pad-particle-wafer.

  • A feasibility of using Particle Entrainment Simulator (PES) to evaluate model variables describing sediment entrainment in a river system was investigated. PES in a laboratory was utilized to simulate the sediment resuspension phenomenon in the river and the subsequent relationship between shear rate and sediment entrainment was developed. The total suspended solids (TSS) data from PES was incorporated into statistical models in an effort to describe behaviors of net particle movement in the river. PES was found to be adequate for simulating particle entrainment phenomenon in a river system. Statistical analysis was used to assess propriety of PES data for predictive purposes. The results showed good relationships between PES results and system variables, such as average stream velocity and net particle movement.

  • The morphological analysis of wear particle is a very effective means for machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. In order to describe morphology of various wear particle, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions. And fractal descriptors was applied to boundary and surface of wear particle with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze shape and surface wear particle are shape fractal dimension and surface fractal dimension. The shape fractal dimension can be derived from the boundary profile and surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. The morphology of wear particles can be effectively obtained by two fractal dimensions.

  • We have developed a simple model for describing the non-spherical particle growth phenomena using modified 1-dimensional sectional method. In this model, we solve simultaneously particle volume and surface area conservation sectional equations which consider particles' irregularities. From the correlation between two conserved properties of sections, we can predict the evolution of the aggregates' morphology. We compared this model with a simple monodisperse-assumed model and more rigorous two dimensional sectional model. For the comparison, we simulated silica and titania particle formation and growth in a constant temperature reactor environment. This new model shows a good agreement with the detailed two dimensional sectional model in total number concentration, primary particle size. The present model can also successfully predict particle size distribution and morphology without costing very heavy computation load and memory needed for the analysis of two dimensional aerosol dynamics.

  • The present study addresses an analytical investigation to understand the characteristics of gas flow in the High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel(HVOF) thermal spray gun. One-dimensional analysis is extended to involve the effects of the wall friction and powder particle diameter. From the present analysis it is well known that the flow characteristics inside and outside the thermal spray gun is varied depending on the combustion chamber pressure. The thermal spray gun flow is characterized by six different patterns. The powder particle size and wall friction significantly influence the powder particle velocity. The particle velocity decreases with an increase in the powder particle size. This implies that the combustion chamber pressure should be increased to achieve a higher velocity of the powder particle.
