  • Jinyangju, Korean rice wine, has been traditionally brewed using unique glutinous rice produced only in Haenam, Korea. Because this glutinous rice is expensive, possibility of partial replacement by lower costing non-waxy rice to make Jinyangju was investigated. Both chemical and sensory properties of the rice wine made from different levels of non-waxy rice replacement were determined. Total acidity, pH, total sugar content, and alcohol content of rice wines made with varying replacement levels of non-waxy rice (0, 30, 50, and 70%) were respectively as follows: 1.02, 0.98, 1.1, and 1.1%; 3.76, 3.83, 3.64, and 3.58; 6.22, 6.31, 4.58, and 4.73%; 14.2, 14.8, 15.6, and 15,2%. Highest overall acceptabilities in sensory test including color, flavor, odor, and overall favorite were 4.45, 4.73, 4.45, and 3.55, respectively, at 30% non-waxy rice replacement.

  • Due to the limitations of conventional removable partial denture prostheses to treat a cleft lip & palate patient who shows scar tissue on upper lip, excessive absorption of the maxillary residual alveolar ridge, and class III malocclusion with narrow palate and undergrowth of the maxilla, 4 implants were placed on the maxillary edentulous region and a maxillary removable implant-supported partial denture was planned using a CAD/CAM milled titanium bar. Unlike metal or gold casting technique which has shrinkage after the molding, CAD/CAM milled titanium bar is highly-precise, economical and lightweight. In practice, however, it is very hard to obtain accurate friction-fit from the milled bar and reduction in retention can occur due to repetitive insertion and removal of the denture. Various auxiliary retention systems (e.g. $ERA^{(R)}$, $CEKA^{(R)}$, magnetics, $Locator^{(R)}$ attachment), in order to deal with these problems, can be used to obtain additional retention, cost-effectiveness and ease of replacement. Out of diverse auxiliary attachments, $Locator^{(R)}$ has characteristics that are dual retentive, minimal in vertical height and convenient of attachment replacement. Drill and tapping method is simple and the replacement of the metal female part of $Locator^{(R)}$ attachment is convenient. In this case, the $Locator^{(R)}$ attachment is connected to the milled titanium bar fabricated by CAD/CAM, using the drill and tapping technique. Afterward, screw holes were formed and 3 $Locator^{(R)}$ attachments were secured with 20 Ncm holding force for additional retention. Following this procedure, satisfactory results were obtained in terms of aesthetic facial form, masticatory function and denture retention, and I hereby report this case.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of partial replacement of corn grain and soybean meal with agricultural by-product feeds on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics and optimum levels of mixing ratio. The agricultural by-products to examine the effectiveness of the partial replacement of concentrate were wheat bran, corn gluten feed, bakery waste, soybean curd, rice bran, green kernel rice, soybean hull, distillers' grain, and mushroom substrate. In the first experiment, in vitro ruminal fermentation characteristics of feedstuffs were evaluated at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours after incubation. In the second experiment, fermentation characteristics were investigated with green kernel rice and soybean curd which replaced corn grain or soybean meal. Feed were formulated with 40% corn grain + 20% soybean meal (T1), 40% corn grain + 17.5% soybean meal + 2.5% soybean curd (T2), 25% corn grain + 20% soybean meal + 15% green kernel rice (T3), and 30% corn grain + 15% soybean meal + 6% green kernel rice + 9% soybean curd (T4), respectively, with forage source of 10% alfalfa hay, 20% timothy hay, and 10% corn silage as fed-basis. In 24 and 48 hour cultivations, T4 showed significantly lower pH compared to T1, whereas in 3 and 24 hour cultivations, T4 showed significantly higher DM degradation compared to T1. In addition, the gas production of T3 was also higher than T1 (p<0.05). Overall results of the present experiments indicated that green kernel rice and soybean curd as agricultural by-products have the possibility of partial replacements of corn grain and soybean meal.

  • The present study proposed a k-value to determine the water-to-binder ratio of concrete using fly ash (FA) or ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) as a partial replacement of ordinary portland cement (OPC) with regard to an equivalent strength of OPC concrete. From the regression analysis using an extensive database including 7076 concrete mixes, k-values were determined for various water-to-binder ratios when the replacement ratio of OPC by the addition of FA or GGBS were below 50%. For deriving an equation to identify k-value, the relationship of concrete compressive strength and water-to-binder ratio was generalized by an exponential function. In general, k-values decreased with the increases in the addition of FA or GGBS for replacement of OPC and water-to-binder ratio. The rate in decreasing k-value against water-to-binder ratio was marginally affected by the addition of FA or GGBS, although a higher k-value was commonly obtained for GGBS concrete than for FA concrete at the same water-to-binder ratio. Consequently, the determined k-values were simplified as a function of water-to-binder ratio and the addition ratio of FA or GGBS as replacement of OPC.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of fat on structure and texture of soybean curds by partial or whole replacement of soybean with defatted soy flour, The textural properties of soybean curd were examined by Instron universal testing machine, and the microscopic structure of soybean curds was examined by Scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results obtained were as follows ; 1. Textural parameters determined by Instron universal testing machine showed that hardness and gumminess of soybean curs were significantly increased as the fat contents of the samples decreased. On the while, springiness of the samples were significantly lowered as the fat content decreased. 2. Microscopic structure of soybean curds examined by SME demonstrated that samples with high fat had more fat globules and thinner network layer which were assumed to surround moisture with.

  • This article presents the flexural behaviour of reinforced fly ash (FA)-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) beams with partial replacement of FA for about 10% by weight with paper sludge ash (PSA). The beams were made of M35 grade concrete and cured under three curing conditions for comparison viz., ambient curing, external exposure curing, and oven curing at $60^{\circ}C$. The beams were experimentally tested at the 28th day of casting after curing by conducting two-point loading flexural test. Performance aspects such as load carrying capacity, first crack load, load-deflection and moment-curvature behaviours of both types of beams were experimentally studied and their results were compared under different curing conditions. To verify the response of reinforced GPC beams numerically, an ANSYS 13.0 finite element program was also used. The result shows that there is a good agreement between computer model failure behaviour with the experimental failure behaviour.

  • We have experienced one case of Redo AVR which was performed 13 months after initial operation. The patient had received AVR [Bjork-Shiley disc valve] and MVR [Ionescu-Shiley tissue valve] because of ASI and MSI at March, 1981. During follow up through the OPD, he complained exertional dyspnea and progressive jaundice with hemolytic anemia was also noticed since 1 month prior to readmission. Cardiac catheterization and angiography revealed periaortic valvular leakage due to partial detachment of previously replaced prosthetic aortic valve. Re-replacement of prosthetic aortic valve with Ionescu-Shiley valve was performed and the patient was discharged at 17th POD without any complications.

  • The properties of mortar and concrete including metakaolin as a partial cement replacement were investigated in terms of fluidity and compressive strength. The results show that mortar and concrete in which 10 % of cement is replaced with metakaolin exhibit much higher compressive strength after 3 days of hydration than ordinary Portland cement, indicating that metakaolin can be used in the production of high strength concrete replacing silica fume. The type of superplasticizer largely affected on the fluidity and compressive strength of mortar and concrete including metakaolin. It was concluded that when metakaolin is used for the purpose of manufacturing high strength concrete, it is desirable to use PNS based blends rather than PNS, PMS and polycarboxylate based superplasticizer.

  • The consumer demands for quality of meats has become diverse in recent years. The present paper describes mainly the technology to improve the broiler meat quality with special reference to reducing fat contents in edible meats which is the heart of the quality constraints. Abdominal fat deposition in broilers was reduced by feeding of medium-chain triglycerides(MCT), suggesting MCT feeding is useful to produce broiler meat with low fat content. A phase feeding system to aim at improving meat quality that is mainly comprised with partial replacement of dietary protein into phase during 4∼6 weeks increased edible meat yields and reduced abdominal fat deposition and fat contents in breast and thigh meats. Whiteness of fat tissue was intensified by feeding beef tallow or lard in place of yellow grease. Feeding Phaffia yeast containing astaxanthin increased redness of breast and thigh meats and improved visual appearance of meats which may be preferential for consumers. Feeding fish oil reduced abdominal fat deposition and increased EPA and DHA contents of fat tissues. These procedures could be used for manipulation of meat quality to meet consumer demands.
