Parenting Stress Changes in Both of Continuous Working and Non-Working Mothers After the Birth of Their First Child : A Focus on the Effects of the Values, Knowledge and Expectations about Their Children (첫 자녀 출산 후 취업모와 전업모의 양육스트레스 변화 : 자녀가치, 양육지식, 자녀미래기대가 미치는 영향을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate parenting stress changes in both continuous working and continuous non-working mothers after the birth of their first child and their relationships with the cognitive variables about child-rearing, using the 3rd Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC) by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education(KICCE). The results revealed that the parenting stress of the non-working mothers was higher than the stress experienced by the working mothers. The increase in stress was only found both groups between the second year and the third year of childbirth. The total explanatory power of the knowledge, values and expectations regarding their children saw stress increase for the working mothers, but saw it decrease for the non-working mothers. Finally, the emotional value surrounding parenthood was the most powerful variable for both groups, with the exception of the non-working mothers' stress, as experienced in the first year.

Dual-Career Parenting Stress : Effects of Mother's Values and Support Systems (3세 이하 자녀를 둔 전문·사무직 취업모의 양육스트레스 - 어머니 역할관과 지원체계를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examined the effects of support systems and traditional value beliefs about the role of women on the parenting stress of dual-career mothers. The subjects were 203 employed mothers with one child 4- to 36-months of age. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were satisfaction with child care, value placed on traditional maternal roles, sex of child, and cost of child care. Contrary to the researchers assumptions, social support systems had no effect on parenting stress. The results of this study have implications for formal and informal support systems for employed mothers with young children.

  • This study has examined multiple influences of several variables on parenting behavior by looking into illustrative studies. This study provides support to the view that various factors influence parenting and that parenting behavior is multiply determined. Characteristics of parents, children and the context in which parent-child relations occur cause different childrearing patterns among parents. This study can be summarized as follows: 1) Parental behavior is influenced to a large degree by what the parent brings to the situation. In other words, characteristics of the parent including personality characteristics, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, level of maturity, values and childrearing beliefs contribute to individual differences in parenting. 2) The parent's relationship history influences the personality characteristics that the parent brings to his or her adult roles. To understand who the parent is today, we have to look at who the parent was, and what the parent was doing in the years prior to parenthood. That is, we need to see the life course of the individual before parenthood. 3) Contextual variables including the immediate context and the larger context have proved to influence parental behaviors. Characteristics of the immediate context such as the quality of marital rationship can influence the parent's psychological well-being and his or her behavior toward the childen while characteristics of the larger context such as the economic situation and the neighborhood can influence the level of stress experienced by the parent and cosequently how the parent relates to his or her child. 4) In order to understand the development of the parent-child relationship we need to look at the characteristics of the child. Children may elicit positive behaviors from their parents, or they may possess characteristics that the parents find aversive thus leading to difficulties in the relationship. Therefore, much depends on the fit beween the characteristics of the parents and characteristics of the child. By examining multiple contemporaneous influences on parenting, this study could deepen the understanding of why parents have different childrearing patterns, why some parents fail to meet their children's demands and why parents act in certain ways. What we ultimately hope is that as we learn more about parenting and the development of parent-child relationships, we will be better able to provide parents with the supports they need to achieve their parenting goals.

The Developmental Trajectory of the Value of Children of Primiparous Mothers During the First Four Years (초산모의 출산 후 4년간 자녀가치 변화궤적)

  • This paper examined the longitudinal changes observed in the emotional and instrumental values of children of primiparous mothers during the first to fourth year of childhood. Using latent growth modeling, the authors analyzed the four waves of data collected from 937 mothers and their firstborn babies nationwide in South Korea. This data was harvested from the Panel Study on Korean Children conducted by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. The results indicate that emotional and instrumental values of children showed decreasing patterns. When each year's parenting stress was controlled, the emotional value of children tended to increase, whereas the instrumental value of children showed no significant change. Generally, it was found that the higher the parenting stress of each year, the corresponding year's value of the children tended to be lower, except in the case of the first year's emotional value of children. How these results can be best interpreted as well as the implication of these results is also discussed.

A Study on the differential value 'Podaegi' in Korean Tradition

  • Recently, Podaegi, a traditional Korean childcare product, are spreading abroad like a trend. Sites specializing in the sale of ' Podaegi have been created in the UK, France, and the US, and their popularity is increasing. In addition, China's preference for safe products and demand for global products and premium baby products are rapidly increasing. Nevertheless, the proportion of baby products in Korea is still very small. Therefore, this study seeks to find the differentiated value and direction of development of Podaegi by finding a form and method similar to Podaegi and overseas. The research method was reviewed based on literature research and actual cases. As a result, Podaegi has high practicality and emotional value, and attachment parenting is possible. When the stages of attachment parenting were compared and analyzed, it was confirmed that attachment parenting is possible for a wider age group than others, and that Korean traditional Podaegi has developed differently from Western ones, and that Korean Podaegi is very advantageous for attachment parenting. Therefore, in the future, Korea's Podaegi needs to meet overseas import standards, propose designs that fit the current situation, and promote and develop differentiated values abroad.

Present Status, Difficulties and Support Needs of Multi-cultural Families Raising Children under 3 Years Old Enrolled at Child Care and Education Centers (어린이집 재원 다문화 가정 영아의 양육 현황과 어려움 및 지원요구)

  • Objective: This study intended to analyze parenting characteristics, difficulties and support needs of multi-cultural families that had children under 3 years old, in order to develop their supporting resources. Methods: This study performed semi-structured interviews with 7 mothers from multi-cultural families that had their young children enrolled at child care and education centers in Gyeonggi Do. The interview data transcribed were analyzed using the successive contents analysis, and led to 4 themes and 12 sub-themes. Results: First, the mothers from multi-cultural families were married without understanding the Korean language and culture. Second, the multi-cultural mothers didn't properly respond to their children's needs in interaction and language aspects. As a result, the multi-cultural support centers and child care and education centers gave help to them. Third, in the view of the difficulties facing mothers, parenting problems caused by the lack of information concerning child education, the biased burden of parenting, and the different parenting values of Korean families were all expressed by the mothers. Fourth, regarding support needs, providing individual professional support for children and child-raising support for mothers, customized language and employment support for mothers and parenting education for fathers and family education on multi-culturalism are needed. Conclusion/Implications: Suggestions for decreasing the difficulties facing multi-cultural families that had children under 3 years old were discussed.

Effects of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy on Parenting Skill and Children's Problem Behaviors: Meta-Analysis (부모-아동 상호작용치료가 양육기술과 아동의 문제행동에 미치는 영향: 메타분석)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of parent - child interaction therapy on parenting skills and children's problem behaviors by meta - analysis and to provide a basis for intervention methods. Methods : This study was conducted from January 2007 to March 2018 and the study was conducted using the parent-child interaction program for children with disabilities. PubMed and CINAHL, EBSCOhost, Science Direct were used to search for studies, and reference searching was also conducted as a secondary search option. A total of 7 studies was selected to meet the selection criteria, and the final 7 studies were assessed by using the Jadad scale. Statistical tests were performed using the R-meta-analysis program. Results : The effect size of parenting skill was large and the size of the effect of parenting stress was moderate. The children's problem behaviors also showed moderate effect sizes and all p-values were statistically significant (p < .0001). Conclusion : This study examined the effects of parent-child interaction therapy on parenting skills, parenting stress, and children's problem behaviors. Future research is needed to establish the basis for intervention for family involvement in pediatric occupational therapy.

Study of the Social Wellbeing of Working Mothers of Preschool Children (미취학 자녀를 둔 취업모의 사회적 안녕감에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the social wellbeing of working mothers of preschool children with the aim of identifying relationships between social wellbeing and influencing factors, focusing on the individual, relationship, and work environment of the mothers. Data on 390 working mothers were used for this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 program and descriptive statistics. Pearson's correlation analyses and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. The results show that social wellbeing has significantly positive correlations with education, monthly household income, number of children, age of the first child(8 and over), social capital for childcare, division of childcare, maternal role values, spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement, and family-supportive work environment, as well as significantly negative correlations with weekly working hours, sociological ambivalence, spouse's beliefs about father's breadwinner role and gender-role values, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers. In addition, hierarchical regression revealed that spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement and a family-supportive work environment were significantly positive predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing, whereas working mothers'sociological ambivalence toward their roles, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers were significantly negative predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing. These results point to ways of changing education and policy to improve the social wellbeing of working mothers.

A Study on the Image Type of the Korean Traditional Child Rearing: Focused on Mothers with Infancy and Early Childhood (영유아기 자녀를 둔 어머니의 전통육아에 대한 이미지 분석: Q방법론적 접근)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the image types of the traditional child rearing by mothers with infancy and early childhood through Q-methodology. To conduct that, Q-group was first formed from mothers who raised their child in traditional way after their brainstorming about the method and interviewing them. Based on the subject's shared statements, Q-standard was made with 40 subjects. The 40 subjects were asked to grade each statement from one to nine and then their responses were analyzed by QUANL program. The image types were classified into 4 groups. There were 'Type 1: Relationship-oriented parenting through harmony' 'Type 2: Archetypal Parenting based on the Korean traditional values,' 'Type 3: Practice-oriented Parenting to respect life,' and 'Type 4: Attachment Parenting modern variants necessary.' This study serves as a momentum to see the impact of traditional child rearing on modern child upbringing by examining mother's viewpoints on traditional child rearing.

The Effects of Depression on Adolescents' Internet Over-Dependency: An Analysis of the Mediating Effect of Parenting Style (청소년의 우울이 인터넷과의존에 미치는 영향: 부모양육방식의 매개효과)

  • This study aims to investigate the relationship between depression, internet addiction, and parenting style. The study also examines the mediating effect of parenting style between depression and internet over-dependency. For these purposes, 375 adolescent, excluding missing values, were finally analyzed from the 13th Korea Welfare Panel Study(KWPS). Correlation analysis, mediationg analysis performed using SPSS(21.0 version). The findings of the study were as follows. First, it was identified that parental participation significantly mediated the relationship between depression and internet over-dependency. Second, it was identified that child abuse significantly mediated the relationship between depression and internet over-dependency. Based on the study results, this research suggested the practice and policy implications to increase depression, especially parental participation, to the adolescent as well as to decrease their child abuse.
