Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for classification and labelling will provide an internationally agreed hazard classification system of chemical products and for communication of those hazards. This study aimed for establishment of the oral acute toxic class (ATC) method and application of GHS on pesticides. The ATC method was developed for determining $LD_{50}$ estimates of chemical substances with significantly fewer animals than needed when applying conventional $LD_{50}$ tests. We carried out $LD_{50}$ test and ATC test on 13 pesticides, Although methidathion EC and parathion-ethyl EC showed significantly different in $LD_{50}$ values between $LD_{50}$ test and ATC method, there are no difference in toxicity class by GHS. Both tests on the other pesticides showed almost equal results and toxicity class by GHS. Therefore, this study indicated high possibility of application of ATC method and GHS on pesticides.

It is impossible to remove toxic organic substances that are recognized as a cancer caused suspicious element in drinking water using the conventional water purification method. This study introduces groundwater into a reaction chamber as an effective amount of water to process this water using a mixed method of AOP oxidation and M/F membrane and purifies it as a desirable level by artificially mixing such toxic substances in order to effectively process the water. Based on this fact, this study configures an optimal operation condition. The VOCs existed in toxic substances was investigated as a term of phenol and toluene, and agricultural chemicals were also investigated as a term of parathion, diazinon and carbaryl. The experiment applied in this study was performed using a single and composite soolution. In the operation condition applied to fully dissolve and remove such substances, the amount of $H_2O_2$ injected in the process was 150 mL of a fixed quantity, the value of pH was configured as $5.5{\sim}6.0$, the temperature was controlled as a range of $12{\sim}16^{\circ}C$, the dissolved amount of ozone was applied more than 5.0 mg/L, the reaction time was determined as an optimal condition, such as $30{\sim}40$ minutes, and the segregation membrane in the same reactor was determined for acquire water drinking of large quantity using a pore size of $0.45{\mu}m$ M/F membrane.

This study was carried out to indicate the status of agricultural environment in Yangpyong area which is special protection area for tap water in Han river during three years($1996{\sim}1998$). The main study was on pesticide monitoring, analysis of pesticides in Bokpocheon water and soil. Water in this small river for supplying to the rice was found nine pesticides residues, ranged from 0.1 to 22.7 ppb, similar patterns from survey conducted in National Institute of Agricultural Science and technology, Soil in rice paddy has also low levels of eleven pesticide residues, ranged from 0.002 to 0.55 ppm.
A comprehensive quality survey for heavy metals, organophosphorous and organochlorine residual pesticides, and coplanar PCBs in samples such as water, sediments and soils as well as spiders has been implemented. The samples were undertaken at nine stream sites and their vicinity in August 2006, representing different surrounding environments. The levels of PCBs were expressed as concentrations and WHO-TEFs. Among 12 coplanar PCBs as target compounds in this study, 2,3', 4,4', 5-PentaCB (IUPAC # 118) was the congener with the highest concentration. The total concentrations and TEF values of coplanar PCBs in Siheung stream sediment (heavy industrial complex site located in Ansan city) were 3915.50 pg/g and 0.8366 pg-TEQ/g on a dry weight basis, respectively. Such levels were around 40 times higher compared to sediment from Gapyung stream (green site located in the upper of Myunggi mountain). It is probably due to the direct input of PCBs trom PCBs treatment materials. Organophosphorous (EPN, dementon-s-methyl, diazinon, parathion, and phenthoate) and organochlorine (alpha-BHC, aldrin, 4,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDE, endosulfan alpha and etc.) pesticides were not detected above 5 ppb of detection limits. The concentrations of Cu and Cd in water and sediment samples from Siheung stream were 44.11 and $0.17ug/m\ell$ and $713.42{\mu}g/g$ and $3.73{\mu}g/g$, respectively, which contained $20\sim40$ times higher concentrations than those from Gapyung stream. In addition to the water and sediment samples, the levels of heavy metals in spider from designated sampling sites were also determined. Heavy metals in spider collected near Siheung stream was appeared to be equivalent and/or a little higher levels with respect to other spiders. Furthermore, the ratio of relative heavy metals (Cu, Cd, and Pb) in spider from each stream site showed a correlation as similar as that of heavy metals in soil samples.
As a part of continuing monitoring program since 1983, a study on pesticide residues on Korean agricultural products has been conducted to offer the tolerance of pesticide residues suiting Korean reality. The samples used in this experiment were collected from four areas in five provinces of Korea. The residue, levels of organochlorine pesticide (two kinds), organophosphoric pesticide (eight kinds) and carbamate pesticide (three kinds) on lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, radish Korean, potato, egg plant, green onion, persimmon and sweet potato, and the residue levels of captan and captafol on tomato, green pepper fresh, apple, peach, soybean, cucumber and cabbage Korean were determined by GC-NPD and ECD.
This study was carried out to survey the residual characteristics of endocrine disruptor (ED)-suspected pesticides in greenhouse soils and assess their leachabilites to groundwater. Greenhouse soils were collected from 40 sites of greenhouse in 2008 in Korea. Sixteen ED-suspected pesticides which had been using in Korea, such as alachlor, benomyl, carbaryl, cypermethrin, 2,4-D, dicofol, endosulfan, fenvalerate, malathion, mancozeb, metribuzin, metiram, methomyl, parathion, trifluralin, and vinclozolin, in the soils, were analyzed by chromatographic methods using GLC-ECD and HPLC-DAD/FLD. Limits of detection (LODs) of the test pesticides ranged from 0.0004 to 0.005 mg/kg. Recoveries of the target pesticides from soil ranged from 72.69 to 115.28%. Four pesticides including cypermethrin were detected in the range of from 0.001 to 2.019 mg/kg, representing that their detection rate from greenhouse soils was 37.5%. The highest detection rate was observed from endosulfan which was detected from 16 site soils of the total samples, indicating that endosulfan is persistent in soil because of its very low mobility and high adsorption characteristics in soil. Based on the groundwater ubiquity scores (GUSs) of the pesticides detected from greenhouse soils, most of them have little possibilities of groundwater contamination except the fungicide vinclozolin with some leaching potential because of high water solubility and very low soil adsorption property.
There was a great variation in insecticide susceptibilities among field and laboratory populations of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hiibner). Unselected laboratory population, which had been reared for 6-7 generations in our laboratory without exposure to insecticides, was more susceptible than its parental field population in all tested insecticides. Two selected laboratory populations with parathion or deltamethrin showed much higher insecticide tolerance than did the unselected laboratory population in their own selection insecticide. The variation of the insecticide susceptibilities was highly correlated with esterase and acetylcholinesterase activities. Field and the selected laboratory populations had lower acetylcholinesterase activities and higher esterase activities than did the unselected laboratory population. Acetylcholinesterase of the field and the selected laboratory populations had higher Km values than did that of the unselected. In a population, Km values were varied among different developmental stages; acetylcholinesterase of the fifth instar larvae had the highest Km value among those of the other larval stages. Twenty one esterase bands were separated on 6.5% nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel from the whole body extracts of the fifth instar larvae. E2, E7, E8, Ell, El6, and El7 esterase bands were developed more frequently in the insecticides-selected populations than in the unselected population. These results suggest that the variation of insecticide susceptibilities of the beet armyworm includes both biochemical mechanisms: target site insensitivity and enhanced activity of detoxification enzyme.
Characteristics of organophoshhorus pesticides (OPs) distribution were investigated in Shingu Reservoir, as a shallow eutrophic agriculture reservoir in Korea. In August 2006, IBP, DDVP and dyfonate were detected in the water column of Singu Reservoir, ranging from 1340.7 to 16030.1 ng $L^{-1}$, 58.7 to 127.6 ng $L^{-1}$ and N.D. to 20.3 ng $L^{-1}$, respectively, However, in September 2006, mevinfos, ethoprofos, phorate, chlorfenvinfos, and methidathion were also found in addition to IBP (202.5${\sim}$213.2 ng $L^{-1}$), DDVP (100.7${\sim}$340.6 ng $L^{-1}$) and dyfonate (N.D.${\sim}$25.0 ng $L^{-1})$. Maximum concentrations of OPs were observed at the middle depth in August, which might be related with photo-oxidation. On the other hand, IBP and DDVP among the OPs were detected in suspended particles, suggesting the relatively active adsorption reactivity. The composition of OPs varied temporally on account of the influence of inflow water from its surrounding areas. In the present study, the observed OPs concentrations seem to be not acute toBic levels to aquatic organisms in Shingu Reservoir, considering the standard monitoring levels of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Japan Ministry of Environment.
Risk assessment traditionally are conducted on individual chemicals; however, humans are exposed to multiple chemicals in daily life. The organophosphorus (OP) pesticides are considered in a single risk assessment because they act by a common mechanism of toxicity, and there is likely to be expose to multiple OP pesticides simultaneously or sequentially. The OP pesticides act by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterasc (AChE) and have available extensive database. AChE is widely distributed throughout the body, most importantly in the nervous system. Inhibition of AChE results in accumulation of acetylcholine in the nervous system that results in clinical signs of cholinergic toxicity, including increased salivation and lacrimation, nausea and vomiting, muscle fasciculation, lethargy and fatigue, among others. To conduct an exposure assessment for pesticides in the diet, we need to know the food consumption patterns of the populations, and the pesticide residue levels in the foods that are consumed. This study was conducted to identify cumulative dietary risk due to multiple OP pesticides that can be exposed through various foods. Total 22 food samples including cereals, vegetables and fruits were collected randomly two times from food markets in several sites (4 cities). The subjected foods were selected by regarding of highly consumed foods to general Korean people. The 12 OP pesticides including Acephate, Azinphos-methyl, Chlorpyrifos, and Diazinon were monitored. For the exposure assessment, general adult group of 60 kg body weight was regarded as target population and food consumption data suggested by Lee et al. (2000) were used as consumed value of individual food. Analyses of samples for OP pesticides have been carried out according to the multiclass multiresidue analysis method and acephate and methamidophos analysis method of Korea Food Code. In general the levels of OP pesticides found in the food samples were very low or not detected.
This study utilized the 1/25,000 topographic map of the upper area from the Geum-ho watermark located at the middle of Geum-ho river from the National Geographic Information Institute. For the analysis, first, the influence of the size of critical area to the hydro topographic factors was examined changing grid size to $10m{\times}10m,\;30m{\times}30m\;and\;50m{\times}50m$, and the critical area for the formation of a river to $0.01km^2{\sim}0.50km^2$. It is known from the examination result of watershed morphology according to the grid size that the smaller grid size, the better resolution and accuracy. And it is found, from the analysis result of the degree of the river according to the minimum critical area for each grid size, that the grid size does not affect on the degree of the river, and the number of rivers with 2nd and higher degree does not show remarkable difference while there is big difference in the number of 1st degree rivers. From the results above, it is thought that the critical area of $0.15km^2{\sim}0.20km^2$ is appropriate for formation of a river being irrelevant to the grid size in extraction of hydro topographic parameters that are used in the runoff analysis model using topographic maps. Therefore, the GIUH model applied analysis results by use of the river level difference law proposed in this study for the explanation on the outflow response-changing characters according to the decision of a critical value of a minimum level difference river, showed that, since an ogival occurrence time and an ogival flow volume are very significant in a flood occurrence in case of not undertow facilities, the researcher could obtain a good result for the forecast of river outflow when considering a convenient application of the model and an easy acquisition of data, so it's judged that this model is proper as an algorism for the decision of a critical value of a river basin.
