A 28-year-old male patient with a history of cystic fibrosis (CF) was referred to the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine for an evaluation of a cystic lesion in the right maxilla using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). CF is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by an abnormal production of viscous mucus, affecting the mucociliary clearance. The CBCT scan revealed a large cystic lesion in the right maxilla extending from the right maxillary second molar to the midline in the region of the right central incisor with a significant buccal expansion. Further evaluation revealed complete opacification of the paranasal sinuses with medial bulging of the lateral maxillary sinus walls. The maxillary and sphenoid sinuses also appeared hypoplastic. The peculiar finding seen in this case was the presence of marked sclerosis and an increase in the thickness of the adjacent bony framework. This report aimed to describe the common sinonasal findings associated with CF and its underlying pathophysiology.

The primary malignat melanoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is extemely rare and accounts for only between 0.6 and 2.5% of the total 'number of malignat melanoma at all sites. In the nose, the left side is involved in 60% of cases and the most frequent site is the septum followed by the inferior and middle turbinates. In the sinuses, the maxillary sinus is the site of origin in 80% of cases, followed by ethmoid sinus. The tumors are sessile or polypoid, with variable color such as pink. white, brown or black. Of all tumors, 10~30% are amelanotic, requiring special stains for melanin. When primary site of melanoma is mucosal origin. treatment of primary lesion is often hampered by anatomic retrictions and large size, which results from the delayed diagnosis caused by their location. We report 4 cases of primary malignant melanoma of nasal cavity with review of literature.
Pyknodysostosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the post natal onset of short limbs, short stature, and generalized hyperostosis along with acro-osteolysis with sclerosis of the terminal phalanges, a feature that is considered essentially pathognomonic. Other features include persistence of fontanelles, delayed closure of sutures, wormian bones, absence of frontal sinuses, and obtuse mandibular gonial angle with relative mandibular prognathism. We report a case of 17-year-old girl who presented with a chief complaint of retention of deciduous teeth. General physical examination demonstrated short stature, frontal and parietal bossing, depressed nasal bridge, beaked nose, hypoplastic midface, wrinkled skin over the finger tips, and nail abnormalities. Radiographs showed multiple impacted permanent and supernumerary teeth, hypoplastic paranasal sinuses with acro-osteolysis of terminal phalanges, and open fontanelles, and sutures along with wormian bones in the lambdoidal region.
In Order to Diagnose Maxillary Bone and Maxillary Sinus in the X-Ray Paranasal Sinus Projection test, this Study used Skull Rando Phantom to Change the Posture and X-ray tube Angle to 5° of the Head or 5° of ROC Who worked for more than 10 years. The Significance of the Evaluated score was Verified through SPSS Ver. 3.0, and the Cronbach value was Significantly higher at 0.712. In addition, as a Result of Calculating SNR by Setting the ROI(Receiver Operation Characteristic) of the Maxillary bone and Maxillary sinus images, it was the Highest at 6,449 in the Examination by tilting 5° toward the Head or Leg of the X-ray tube. In the study, it is believed that among the X-Ray simple Paranasal Sinus projection tests, a sharp Image can be Obtained during the Examination by Tilting the X-ray tube 5° toward the Head or Leg.

Background: Inverted papilloma(IP) of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is a benign neoplastic condition that can be associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Several studies have indicated an etiologic role for viruses in the development of inverted papilloma. And it is necessary to find out the significance of a biologic markers such as p53, c-erbB-2 to predict the malignant potential. The purposes of this study are to detect HPV in inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, to examine role of HPV as an etiological agent, to examine the relationship between HPV subtype and malignant transformation of inverted papilloma, and to investigate the relation between expression rate of p53, c-erbB-2 and HPV in recurrent or malignant transformation cases. Material and Methods: Thirty two cases of inverted papilloma(IP) in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses were reviewed and classified into 3 groups; simple IP, IP with dysplasia group, IP with squamous cell carcinoma group. Paraffin embedded achival tissue was used in this study. The HPV was detected by in situ hybridzation (ISH) using HPV type 6/11, 16/18, 31/33/35 DNA probes. Expression of p53 and c-erbB-2 was examined by immunohistochemical staining. Results: 1) The HPV was detected in 6(19%) out of 32 cases. 2) The HPV 6/11 was dectected in 4 out of 21 cases of simple IP, HPV 16/18 in 1, HPV 31/33/35 in lout of 8 cases of IP with dysplasia respectively. 3) The positive expression of p53 was 13 cases out of 32 cases; 2 out of 21 cases of simple IP, all of 8 cases of IP with dysplasia and 3 cases of IP with squamous cell carcinoma 4) The positive expression of c-erbB-2 was in 24 out of 32 cases; 16 out of 21 cases of simple IP, 6 out of 8 cases of IP with dysplasia, 2 out of 3 cases of IP with squamous cell ca. 5) The recurrence of IP occurred in lout of 6 cases of positive for HPV, in 4 out of 26 cases negative for HPV. 6) The recurrence of IP occurred only in positive cases for p53. 7) The recurrence of IP occurred in 4(17%) out of 24 cases positive for c-erbB-2, in 1(13%) out of 8 cases negative for c-erbB-2. Conclusion: The p53 expression was associated with Inverted papillomas exhibiting evidence of malignant transformation. Also, there was a correlation between the p53 expression and recurrence.

Polymorphic reticulosis is characterized by relentlessly progressive, localized, destructive inflammation process that predominently involves upper respiratory tract, nose, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx and face. It is a rare and fetal disease in otolarynogologic field. Recently the authors carried out clinical observation on the two cases of polymorphic reticulosis diagnosed histopathologically after biopsy and treated by only radiation therapy with good result.
Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses rarely lead to intracranial manifestations. The authors report an unusual case of a frontal sinus osteoma leading to subdural emyema formation. A 19-year-old man presented with headache and fever one month after minor facial trauma. Neuroradiological studies revealed subdural empyema in left frontal lobe with moderate cerebral edema and a osteoma in the left frontal sinus with sinusitis of maxillary sinus. The patient was surgically treated in one stage operation of decompressive craniectomy, removal of subdural empyema with frontal sinus osteoma, and endoscopic sinus surgery via cranial and nasal route. The patient recovered very well after surgery and postoperative antibiotic therapy. The etiology of intracranial infection and the treatment strategy are to be discussed.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rare but acutely fatal disease caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales, and characterized by an aggressive necrotizing infection spreading from the nose to the paranasal sinuses, orbit, and then to the central nervous system. It most frequently develops in individuals with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. The authors report a 65-year-old woman who developed intracerebral hemorrhage during treatment for rhinocerebral mucormycosis associated with diabetes mellitus. Despite the treatment, she became worse. The pertinent literatures were reviewed.
Renal cell carcinoma is the third most common metastatic tumor to the bone and soft tissues of the head and neck. The common sites of metastatic renal cell carcinoma in head and neck region are nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, oral mucosa, gingiva, tongue, palate, lip as the favored site. The present paper deals with one patient with metachronous oral tongue, nasal cavity and suspicious brain metastases after 2 years of renal cell carcinoma nephrectomy. Also, the patient had history of total thyroidectomy for thyroid follicular carcinoma. Total excision of nasal cavity and tongue mass were performed. Therapeutic aspects are briefly reviewed in literature.
