An advanced aeroelastic analysis using a computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is presented in this Paper. A general aeroelastic analysis system is originally developed and applied to realistic design problems in the transonic flow region, where strong shock wave interactions exist. The present computational approach is based on the modal-based coupled nonlinear analysis with the matched-point concept and adopts the high-speed parallel processing technique on the low-cost network based PC-clustered machines. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Euler equations using the unstructured grid system have been applied to easily consider complex configurations. It is typically shown that the advanced numerical approach can give very realistic and practical results for design engineers and safe flight tests. One can find that the present study conducts a virtual flutter flight test which are usually very dangerous in reality.
In this work, we present the theoretical formulation, operator split solution procedure and partitioned software development for the coupled thermomechanical systems. We consider the general case with nonlinear evolution for each sub-system (either mechanical or thermal) with dedicated time integration scheme for each sub-system. We provide the condition that guarantees the stability of such an operator split solution procedure for fully nonlinear evolution of coupled thermomechanical system. We show that the proposed solution procedure can accommodate different evolution time-scale for different sub-systems, and allow for different time steps for the corresponding integration scheme. We also show that such an approach is perfectly suitable for parallel computations. Several numerical simulations are presented in order to illustrate very satisfying performance of the proposed solution procedure and confirm the theoretical speed-up of parallel computations, which follow from the adequate choice of the time step for each sub-problem. This work confirms that one can make the most appropriate selection of the time step with respect to the characteristic time-scale, carry out the separate computations for each sub-system, and then enforce the coupling to preserve the stability of the operator split computations. The software development strategy of direct linking the (existing) codes for each sub-system via Component Template Library (CTL) is shown to be perfectly suitable for the proposed approach.
This article presents a new global-local hybrid coarse-mesh finite difference (HCMFD) method for efficient parallel calculation of pin-by-pin heterogeneous core analysis. In the HCMFD method, the one-node coarse-mesh finite difference (CMFD) scheme is combined with a nodal expansion method (NEM)-based two-node CMFD method in a nonlinear way. In the global-local HCMFD algorithm, the global problem is a coarse-mesh eigenvalue problem, whereas the local problems are fixed source problems with boundary conditions of incoming partial current, and they can be solved in parallel. The global problem is formulated by one-node CMFD, in which two correction factors on an interface are introduced to preserve both the surface-average flux and the net current. Meanwhile, for accurate and efficient pin-wise core analysis, the local problem is solved by the conventional NEM-based two-node CMFD method. We investigated the numerical characteristics of the HCMFD method for a few benchmark problems and compared them with the conventional two-node NEM-based CMFD algorithm. In this study, the HCMFD algorithm was also parallelized with the OpenMP parallel interface, and its numerical performances were evaluated for several benchmarks.

A new interfacial instability between two vertical fluid layers of different densities is studied. The two layers are flowing between two parallel vertical plates vertically upward or downward, forming counter- or concurrent flows. In order to extend the study to highly-nonlinear regime in future studies, a nonlinear interface evolution equation is derived, and the stability analysis is performed based on the evolution equation. Among the parameters studies are the ratios of the fluid densities and layer thicknesses and the net flow rate.

The objective of this research is to evaluate of global and local damage for steel-concrete composite structures under highway bridge exposed to fire loading. To enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the numerical analysis, the proposed transient nonlinear thermal structure interaction(TSI) parallel fire analysis method is implemented in ANSYS. To validate the TSI parallel fire analysis method, a comparison is made with the standard fire test results. The proposed TSI parallel fire analysis method is applied to fire damage analysis and performance evaluation for Buchen highway bridge. The result of analysis, temperature of low flange and web are exceed the critical temperature. The deflection and deformation state show good agreement with the fire accident of buchen highway bridge.
This paper investigates inelastic seismic demands of the normal component of near-fault pulse-like ground motions, which differ considerably from those of far-fault ground motions and also parallel component of near-fault ones. The results are utilized to improve the nonlinear static procedure (NSP) called Displacement Coefficient Method (DCM). 96 near-fault and 20 far-fault ground motions and the responses of various single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems constitute the dataset. Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis (NDA) is utilized as the benchmark for comparison with nonlinear static analysis results. Considerable influences of different faulting mechanisms are observed on inelastic seismic demands. The demands are functions of the strength ratio and also the pulse period to structural period ratio. Simple mathematical expressions are developed to consider the effects of near-fault motion and fault type on nonlinear responses. Modifications are presented for the DCM by introducing a near-fault modification factor, $C_N$. In locations, where the fault type is known, the modifications proposed in this paper help to obtain a more precise estimate of seismic demands in structures.

This paper is a study on the nonlinear behavior of polyhedron curved space roof as building structures of quasicrystal system. The quasicrystal is made up of two kinds of parallel hexahedrons, and all the line elements of the parallelepiped have the same length. The quasicrystal design grid dome has a pentagonal symmetry and all members have the same length. This paper described form of design gird dome, and showed the analysis conditions. Also, The displacement-load curve is shown through the analysis and we grasped the flow of the load and forces through analysis of design grid dome applied quasicrystal system.
The performance analysis of a three-phase parallel active power filter that compensates PCC voltage and the unbalanced loads is presented in this paper. The proposed scheme in this paper employs a PWM voltage-source inverter and has two operation modes. Firstly, it operates as a conventional active filter with reactive power compensation when PCC voltage is within the 15% voltage drop range. Secondly, it operates as a voltage compensator when PCC voltage is not within the 15% voltage drop range. And both APF and voltage compensator compensate asymmetries caused by nonlinear loads. Finally, two methods of detecting the negative sequence are reviewed, and the validity of this scheme is investigated through analysis of simulation and experimental results for a prototype active power filter system rate at 10KVA.

A static/implicit finite element code for sheet forming (ITAS3D) is parallelized on IBM SP 6000 multi-processor computer. Computing-load-balanced domain decomposition method and the direct solution method at each subdomain (and interface) equation are developed. The system of equations for each subdomain are constructed by condensation and calculated on each processor. Approximated operation counts are calculated to set up the nonlinear equation system for balancing the compute load on each subdomain. Th esquare cup tests with several numbers of elements are used in demonstrating the performance of this parallel implementation. This procedure are proved to be efficient for moderate number of processors, especially for large number of elements.

A four degrees of freedom (dof) motion platform for bicycle simulator is developed. The motion platform, capable of the vertical linear and three angular motions, is designed based on analysis of the typical motion characteristics revealed by the existing six dof bicycle simulator. The platform essentially consists of two parts: the three dof parallel manipulator, consisting of a moving platform, a fixed base and three actuators, and the turntable to generate the yaw motion. The nonlinear kinematics and dynamics of the three dof parallel manipulator with multiple closed loop chains are analyzed for tracking control of the motion platform. The tracking performances of the three control schemes are experimentally compared: the computed torque method (CTM), the sliding mode control (SMC) and the PD control. The CTM and SMC, incorporated with the system dynamics model, are found to be equally better in performance than the PD controller, irrespective of the presence of external disturbance.
