  • Paraffin wax is attracting many attentions for promising solid fuel of hybrid rocket because of its higher regression than other fuels. However, even with paraffin fuel combustion, unsteady low-frequency oscillation of combustion pressure is still observed. And, this is related to the formation of liquid layer and the entrainment of fuel droplets entering the axial combustion gas flow. This study investigates the effect of additional combustion of fuel droplets on the occurrence of low-frequency combustion instability. On the other hand, the formation of fuel droplets depends on Weber Number (the ratio of the inertial force to the surface tension of the liquid) and Reynolds Number of the oxidizer flow. Therefore, a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket was used to monitor the occurrence of combustion instability while changing We number. A series of combustion tests were conducted to control We number by changing the oxidizer flow rate or adding LDPE (low density polyethylene) to base fuel. In the results, it was confirmed that there is a critical We number above which the low-frequency combustion instability occurs.

  • Experiments were performed for freezing of an initially superheated or nonsuperheated liquid phase in a cooled vertical tube. The liquid was placed in a copper tube whose surface maintained a uniform temperature during the data run and the freezing occurred in a copper tube. The phase change medium was n-odtadecane, a paraffin which freezes at about $61^{\circ}C$. Measurements were made which yielded information about the time dependence of the freezing front, of the amount of frozen mass, and of the various energy components extracted from the tube. The time-wise decay of the initial liquid superheat was also measured. Initial superheat of the liquid tends to moderately diminish the rozen mass and associated latent energy extraction at small times but has lit tie effect on these quantities at large tiems. Natural convection in the liquid Plays a modest role only at small times and disappears when the superheat decay to zero. Although the latent energy constitutes the largest contributor to the total extracted energy, the sensible energy components can make a significant contribution, especially at large tube wall subcoolings, large initial liquid superheating and short freezing time.

  • Polymeric membranes have been widely used to separate gas mixtures, such as $O_2/N_2,\;CO_2/CH_4,\;CO_2/N_2$, and olefin/paraffin. The permeation selectivity is the ratio between composition ratio at the permeate side and composition ratio at the feed side. In addition, the permeation selectivity is a product of solubility selectivity and diffusivity selectivity. We present a novel idea and describe its experimental result, which was achieved by preparing polymer gel films that included a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) in a polymer matrix. It is known that $CO_2$ can dissolve easily in imidazolium-based RTILs. We prepared polymer-ionic liquid gel films using an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim] acetate, C-tri) and a host polymer, poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc, Aldrich).

  • The surface tension of liquid iodine was measured by differential capillary rise method at various temperatures above the melting point. A paraffin bath with mercury regulator was used to maintain constant temperature. The height of the meniscus of liquid iodine in the capillary tube was measured by a travelling microscope. The measured values of surface tensions at $125.0^{\circ},135.0^{\circ}, 145.0^{\circ}$ and $155.0^{\circ}$ were 36.88, 35.87, 34.83 and 34.04 dyne/cm, respectively. Calculated Eotvos constant from the surface tension, data. experimentally obtained, were consistent through the temperature range.

  • Washing efficiency of detergents were investigated by measuring of surface reflectance after cotton fabrics soiled in bath which consist of carbon black, palmitic acid, liquid paraffin and carbon tetrachloride were treated in Laundry-tester. Detergents used were soaps and synthetic detergents being on the marketing. Results of this study indicate that soaps were superior to synthetic detergents. Washing continued three times repeatedly in the same bath and washing in the bath which is kept for 24 hours after one washing, both of the washing efficiencies are found no appreciable change.

  • Increasing the oil volume in the oil : water mixtures using isopropyl myristate, oleic acid as oils, the solubilities of methyl, propyl and butyl parabens and the MICs (minimum hibitory concentrations) to E. coli were increased. But in liquid paraffin, the solubility was reversed. The relation between MIC and solubility of parabens had constant factor of 0.7 as saturation fraction percent. The solubility of methyl paraben was crossed over in those of propyl and butyl parabens, when the oil volume was increased. When the oil was used over the cross-over point, methyl paraven was useful to preserve the systems, and below the cross-over point the more lipophilic propyl and/or butyl parabens were effective.

  • 2-Phenyl-1, 8-naphthyridin-4-ones had been synthesized for their cytotoxic activity. Substituted acetophenone was treated with NaH and diethyl carbonate to give ethyl benzoylacetates, which was reacted with substituted 2-aminopyridine and PPA to yield 2-phenylpyridopyrimidine-4-ones. These compounds was heated at $350^\times$C in liquid paraffin to afford final compounds, 2-phenyl-1 , 8-naphthyridin-4-ones.

  • This study investigated the effect of pressure variations on augmentation of heat transfer when the ultrasonic waves were applied. The augmentation ratio of heat transfer was experimentally investigated and was compared with the profiles of pressure distributions calculated applying a coupled finite element-boundary element method (coupled FE-BEM). As the ultrasonic intensities increase from 70W to 340W, the velocity of the liquid paraffin is found to increase as well as kinetic energy, This physical behavior known as quasi-Eckart streaming results from acoustic pressure variations in the liquid. Especially, the higher acoustic pressure distribution near two ultrasonic transducers develops more intensive flow (quasi-Eckart streaming), destroying the flow instability. Also, the profile of acoustic pressure variation is consistent with that of augmentation of heat transfer. This mechanism is believed to increase the ratio of hear transfer coefficient.

  • GTL(gas-to-liquid) fuel produced by the Fischer-Tropsch process using carbon monoxide(CO) and hydrogen(H2) is expected to be one of the environmental friendly fuel for alternative and blended to petrodiesel. But GTL have poor lubricity due to paraffin as main component of GTL which is not involve polar materials. In this paper, we had investigated the lubricity improvement of GTL fuels with various lubricants using HFRR(high frequency reciprocating rig).

  • Nafion supported catalytic membranes were found to be active, stable and selective in th partial oxidation of propane to oxygenates with H2O2 under mild condition. Addition of Fe2+ in liquid phase enhances the reaction rate. Reaction proceeds according to a radical mechanism based on th electrophilic activation of propane on superacid sites and subsequent reaction of the activated paraffin with OH radicals. The use of a catalytic membrane, which allow separation of the intermediate products from the liquid phase containing the oxidant, was found to be effective to perform selective partial oxidation of propane with high yields to oxygenated products.
