This article portrays special cellulose fibers, which are designed to be a functional additive and a carrier for papermaking chemicals. The first part of the presentation deals with the micronized $ARBOCEL^{(R)}$ cellulose fibers, which are used as a functional paper/paperboard additive. In particular as a bulk and speed aid. The detailed description of the micronized $ARBOCEL^{(R)}$ fibers, their function and effects on papermaking process and paper products are given. The second part of the study describes the concept of fiber-based papermaking chemicals. A new generation of fiber-based papermaking chemicals were presented for the first time at the PTS Pulp Technology Symposium 2005, and then several articles were published in various magazine in Asia ("Paper Asia"), the US ("Pulp & Paper"). and Europe ("Wochenblatt fuel Papierfabrikation"). The information generated quite an interest in the paper industry. Extensive studies of these papermaking additives have been made recently, new information obtained, and the compounds have gained more recognition in the industry. The company J. Rettenmaier und Soehne developed a group of fiber-based papermaking additives. They include combination of fibers with sizing agents, starch, fluorochemicals, minerals, biocides and some others. This article presents in-depth study of the AKD modified micronized cellulose as an example of the fiber-based papermaking chemicals concept. The material of the present paper is based mostly on the results of the pilot paper machine study at the Paper Research Institute PTS (Heidenau, Germany), and includes case studies from the mills, which used $ARBOCELPLUS^{(R)}-AKD$ compounds. It should be noted that the $ARBOCELPLUS^{(R)}$ compounds were not designed to replace traditional additives in paper industry. They should rather be used in those areas, where application of "normal" chemicals is especially problematic

Recently the increased concerns about the cost reduction and environmental protection make the paper industry increase the closure level of papermaking system, which results in the buildup of organic and inorganic materials in the papermaking process water. Increase of the system closure causes deterioration of additive performance and provokes diverse problems in papermaking process and product quality. To investigate the effects of process water quality on the physical properties of fine papers handsheets were prepared with process water containing various amounts of inorganic and organic contaminants including calcium or sodium ions and oxidized or cationic starches. Inorgainc and organic materials did not show any significant effect on the physical properties of handsheets. Recycled GCC showed the same trends as inorganic and organic materials. The performance of cationic starch was deteriorated, however, in the recycled white water, which resulted in the reduction of tensile index of handsheets.

Diverse benefits such as reduction of fresh water consumption and effluent discharge, efficient use of raw materials and energy savings can be obtained by papermaking system closure. Closure of papermaking processes, however, causes many problems including reduction of the efficiency of additives, decrease of retention and dewatering, felt plugging, poor Paper quality, generation of slime and odor, poor vacuum efficiency, etc, and it has been recognized that accumulation of Inorganic and organic substances in the process white water is the prime cause of these problems. Therefore, technological developments for preventing accumulation of these detrimental substances are urgently required for Implementing papermaking system closure. Understanding of the accumulation phenomena of the inorganic and organic substances in the papermaking process white water is prerequisite for papermaking system closure. In this study a process simulation method was used to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch In the process white water as the closure level of a fine paper making process is increased. A pilot paper machine was used as a model process. Starch adsorption and desorption models were developed based on the concept of starch adsorption ratio, which was not considered in previous studies. Steady state simulation studies were carried out based on this model using a commercial simulator. In steady state simulation, the variation of dissolved starch concentration in each process unit was monitored as a function of white water usage for wire shower. The result of the steady state simulation showed that dissolved starch concentration and its increase ratio in Process units increased as white water usage ratio for wire shower increased.

As the meaning of dictionary terminology, scum refers to a layer of impurities that accumulates at the surface of a liquid. In papermaking process, scum indicates the floated solid waste generated by a flotation process during the primary wastewater treatment. In this study, different kinds of stocks and scums collected from newspaper, liner, tissue and fine paper were analysed in details. The purpose of this study was firstly to demonstrate the composition characteristics of different sources of scum, secondly the analysis of environmental hazardous materials, and thirdly the evaluation of reutilization ability of fibrous materials from collected scum. As mentioned the meaning of solid waste, scum was actually differ from the waste sludge in sources, compositions and recycling abilities. In the same manner of waste paper, the sludge which is generated within onsite of papermaking processes would be reused as a raw material. The general compositions of scum from waste water were mainly inorganic ash materials, fine fibre fractions, recycled fibre debries, and ink particles. If the scum is able to reuse as fibrous additives in papermaking process, it could contribute to the savings of running costs in both the subsidiaries of fibrous material and the solid waste treatment with even small quantity.

Increase in the utilization rate of recycled paper and closing level of papermaking system increased the problem associated with stickies that include decrease in process runnability and product quality. It is required to establish a process for removing the micro stickies to solve the problems associated with stickies. In this study, the application of flotation process as a method to remove micro stickies was examined. Model micro stickies (MMS) were prepared using microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA), and the influence of three nonionic surfactants on the removal efficiency of MMS from flotation process was examined. Also the effect of surfactants on the deposition of micro stickies that remaining in the papermaking wet end onto wire was examined. Removal efficiency of MMS by flotation was increased when the proportion of nonionic surfactant with propylene oxide (PO) type hydrophilic tail was increased and stock pH was 7. It was suggested that this nonionic surfactant minimized the increase of surface energy of hydrophobic MMS. The MMS with high hydrophobicity remaining in the papermaking system, however, would cause more serious deposition problems on papermaking wet end. Therefore, it is of great importance to increase the removal efficiency of MMS in flotation process for the prevention of papermaking system contamination caused by stickies deposition.

Papermaking tobacco sheet is an important reclaimed process for cigarette making. Traditionally, the pressure driven membrane was often used to isolate the effective compounds from the tobacco sheet extract. However, this method is difficult to remove small ionic compounds. Besides, membrane fouling is a major problem for effective use of these pressure driven membrane technologies. In this study, the electrodialysis process is used to removal the chloride ions and nitrate ions, thus the smoking quality of papermaking tobacco sheet extract can get improved. Three types of electrolytes ($Na_2SO_4$, NaCl and HCl) are chosen to prevent the generation of precipitation. The results indicate that 0.1mol/L HCl at current density of $30mA/cm^2$ is the optimal condition for the electrodialysis process. The removal rates of the Cland $NO{_3}^-$ in tobacco sheet extract are 97% and 98.4%, respectively. The electrodialysis process cost was estimated to be 0.11$/L. Naturally, electrodialysis is not only technological feasible, environmental-friendly and economical-attractive for tobacco extract treatment.
