Since the 1960s when paper began to use as a structural material in furniture, design, the way of using paper was dramatically changed. Before the 1960s, paper was used mostly in decorative purposes like paper $mach\acute{e}$. The development of consumer culture in the 1960s created a new trend for paper in design. Paper became a material for dresses and chairs. Also, the types of paper that adapted on furniture varies from cardboard, paper tubes, glassine paper, honeycomb, etc. The variation of the material results to make possible to create a new form. Moreover, paperboard was broadly used in current society in such area that mostly structural based as architecture. Paper gives great opportunity not only to consumers to buy furniture in inexpensive price also to manufacturers to produce furniture and to test market easily, Moreover, paper furniture is mostly fun. Therefore, the creation of paper furniture becomes diverse in terms of design concept. This study explored the characteristics of paper furniture responding to social backgrounds by decade. Relation between types of paper and the characteristics is one of main points in this research. This study covers furniture design from the 1960s to present and mostly focuses on seating furniture where paper used as structural material. Researching on patent records and contemporary periodicals gave me helpful information on details of design process and consumer culture.

Since early times, paper has been the leading means of expression in human civilization. Along with the development of languages, people have used paper as their major intermediation measures to flourish the culture. At this point of time when studies in latest design are various and abundant, these fixed ideas on paper should be eliminated first for inventive thinking and freedom of expression. Because breaking the established notion helps to diversify the function of paper. We can see furniture made of paper come in useful to our ancestors in their daily life with the development of "Hanjiquot;. Each piece of paper furniture had its own function and beauty depending on processing method. Not only has been used for materials of basic modeling in the process of modern furniture designing, paper has also been used for the main material for the purpose of a new trial. If we try to find out the ways to take diverse characteristics of paper and develop them, while overcoming the defects of the material, paper has great potentiality for many kinds of use in furniture industry.

Today, furniture design, which is changing and diversified, a movement to search a new formative world while reviving our traditionality is continuously proceeded, that implies a new possibility in our culture. In respect of such diversified materials, Korean traditional paper, Hanji (韓紙), has already been acknowledged with its excellence. Also, Hanji is a material that fully contains aesthetic consciousness of Korean people, accordingly, this research investigated and analyzed mainly with Sarangbang furniture among Joseon antique furniture, in order to study the possibility of Hanji decorated furniture as the objet in our interior space. This research utilized Paper cut technique (剪紙技法) among Hanji Crafts technique of expressive elements of Sarangbang furniture using Hanji, which is to make patterns and attach them by cutting out or engraving colored papers using scissors or graver to the wooden frame (白骨). Through this, this research could investigate production process utilizing Paper cut technique, also, Sarangbang furniture utilizing such Paper cut could be settled down as the objet with functional aspect and aesthetic completion in our interior space. Also, the researcher presents value of our original furniture by suggesting final output and considers that systematic researches should be conducted continuously on furniture henceforth utilizing Paper cut technique.

This paper aimed to suggest a new model of fusion furniture design which fits with our surroundings of today. This was performed by grasp and evaluation of recent trend of fusion culture in Korea in order to apply it to the furniture design of fusion style. Fusion furniture design was tried and applied to the table showing unique characteristics of Korea traditional small dining table with modern touch. The result of this paper could also contribute to distribute the unique characteristics and beauty of Korean traditional furniture in the World.

Furniture has been developed in pursuit of human convenience and comfort, but nowadays it does not consider human users and gradually loses the essence of furniture. Especially furniture design that disregards the relation with space loses both the meaning and purpose of furniture. In this regards, it is necessary to understand the essence of furniture design and establish a design direction for future progress. Based on the relation between furniture and space, this paper intended to study on John Pawson's works that pursued the essence of design focusing on users, and propose a direction in a sense of real meaning for modern furniture design after exploring the characteristic of the furniture design of John Pawson. The study method of this paper was to investigate the design language of John Pawson and analyze his furniture in the morphological structural, functional, and material aspects. Based on such analysis, this study investigated the characteristics of the furniture design and found out what the core of the design that he pursued was. The scope of the study included the Independent Furniture that was restricted furniture collections of Driade and Spatial Furniture designed and installed at the stage of space construction. The study result showed that the design of John Pawson considered 'the suitability to a specific place' as important factor and furniture was planned at the stage of planning space. Each independent furniture defines all spaces in the morphological, lay-out and functional aspects of furniture and emphasizes their own property. As Spatial Furniture shares the function of spatial composition element, Pawson's furniture can be all called Spatial Furniture.

This study intends to gather terminology as a first step for encyclopedia of furniture from four areas such as traditional Korean furniture and architecture, modern and contemporary furniture, wood science, and wood culture by each expert. Since China, Japan, America, and European countries have chronologically influenced domestic furniture culture, the furniture terms are currently used by mixed languages such as Chinese characters, Japanese, English, Russian, Korean, etc., in the furniture fields and education. Domestic furniture companies and schools have had lots of difficulties in carrying out works due to the furniture terms not unified. This paper carried out through domestic furniture fields, internet, and furniture books from the inside and outside of the country, including the references of architecture, interior, crafts, and wood science and culture in order to research the terminology, results in the confusing language use of furniture terms at the furniture companies, schools for furniture education, and wood workshops having their own furniture terms. Therefore, for unified and standard furniture terminology, the terms gathered must be reviewed and conformed through the committee composed with the relevant experts so that it will be able to help the relevant business and education carry out their work better.

This Paper focuses on discusing how to select, arrange and evaluate furniture and how to estimate the space of the living room.In this Paper, the size of the living room was manipulated in 3 . ways;66-95.7m2, 99-128.7 m2 and more of 132 m2.The major findings are as follows:1) The subjects in the larger size select or arrange furniture more diversely and show the higher satisfactory level for the arrangement of furniture than those in the smaller ,size do.2) The subjects in the smaller size shows the conflict between their plan for the furniture \ulcorner arrangement and their evaluation for the arranged furniture.3) The variables affecting the estimation of the living room are the arrangement, the color, the number and tile design of furniture.4) Five dimensions(activity, evaluation luxry, plenty and openness)are extracted by factor analysis.

Purpose of this paper is find the similarity and dissimilarity of Korean, Chinese and Japanese traditional furnitures for storage. Also this paper tries to have a comparative analysis on life style, characteristics of housing space and furniture's form of three countries. The study can be summarized as follows. First, space scale and seat levels of three countries are related to furniture's height and form, so that Chinese furniture have over scale than human, and Japanese furniture have the type of box for stacking. Second, the way of heating and materials of floors are concerned with the type of furniture's legs. Third, even if these dissimilarities, the aesthetic characteristics of three countries furniture would be a data base for making design identity of East Asian modern housing furniture.

This paper considers Wedding Furniture(new furniture that brides prepare for marriage) design in Korea. Social survey research methods were applied to study wedding furniture from 1960 to 1990. A questionnaires were delivered to 766 urban housewives. As to the statistical methods of the study, descriptive analysis for frequencies, and $X^2-test$ were selectively performed using SPSS PC+ program. the findings are as follows; During this period, Wedding Furniture became an essential Honsu(혼수: wedding gift) item People choose as Wedding Furnitures that serve basic functions of furniture and are traditionally symbols of wedding. They were increased both quantity and quality. Typical Wedding Furnitures of the Modern time were Jangrong(장농: wardrobe for storing clothes and bed clothes), dressing table, wardrobe chest, cupboard and bed. Wedding Furniture items have become more various in kind. Criteria for selecting Wedding Furniture were functionality, affordability, fashion, and decorativeness, tradition and symbolic of marriage. but, The symbolic importance of Wedding Furniture as Honsu will be weakened with the introduction of a variety of electronic appliances.

One of the conspicuous changes in kitchens is that kitchen space is more economically constructed than ever before giving more considerations to functionality. At the same time, eco-friendliness begins enjoying more attention for health and well-being reasons. Which is more important between functionality and eco-friendliness is a matter of personal taste and judgement. But eco-friendliness has become one of the more critical criteria for users to choose kitchen furniture. This paper examines the design trends of Contemporary kitchen furniture from the perspective of functionality and eco-friendliness. Results show that, as has been expected, many of kitchen furniture items manufactured by major furniture businesses have been found more functional and more eco-friendly than before the research period. I expect this trend to continue long into the future.
