A Case Study on Deformation Characteristics of Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (콘크리트 표면차수벽형 석괴댐(CFRD)의 거동해석)

  • Instrumentation system in Concrete Face Rockfill Dam(CFRD) can give special attention to the deformation characteristics of the rockfill and behavior of the concrete membrane during construction, reservoir filling and subsequent phase of operation. It also contains data about vertical and transversal compressibility moduli of the rockfill, deflections in the concrete slab, and draws comparisons with other concrete face rockfill dams of recent construction. In this paper, the internal deformation data from D dam monitored by means of hydrostatic settlements cells are analyzed. Observations cover the construction stage, reservoir filling and up to March 1991. The above method can be concluded D dam was well constructed and maintained.

A Numerical Analysis of Streamwise Vortices in Turbulent Boundary Layers (주유동방향 와동과 난류경계층과의 상호작용에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • This paper describes the numerical computations of the interaction between the streamwise vortex and a flat plate 3-D turbulent boundary layer. In the present study, the main interest is in the behavior of the streamwise vortices introduced in turbulent boundary layers. The flow behind a vortex generator is modeled by the information that is avilable from studies on the dalta winglet. An algorithm of the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two layer turbulent model to resolve the near-wall flow, is based on the method of artificial compressibility. The present results show boundary layer distortion due to vortices, such as strong spanwise flow divergence and boundary thinning, and have a good agreement with the experimental data.

Study on Determining Consolidation Parameters of Soft Clay Ground Improved by Sand Pile (모래말뚝이 타설된 연약점토지반의 압밀정수결정에 관한 연구)

  • Sand pile method, such as sand drain method and sand compaction pile method, has been popularly used as an improvement method for soft clay grounds. The effect of accelerating consolidation of soft clay grounds has been evaluated with Barron's solution. By the way, the consolidation behavior of soft clay ground with sand piles strongly depends on both the nonlinear mechanical interaction between sand piles and surrounding clays and the degradation permeability of clays. In this paper, the method for determining consolidation parameters of soft clay ground with sand drains by using Barron's solution was proposed, through a series of numerical simulations. Through the method, the change in both volume compressibility and permeability during consolidation was reasonably evaluated.

Also, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, is solved by the method of pseudo compressibility. The present results show that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall, and have a good agreement with the experimental data.

  • For the treatment of high compressibility number in the Reynolds equation, a new class of exponential high-order shape functions has been recently introduced in the literatures. In this paper a FE lubrication analysis method of high speed gas mechanical face seals is developed, implementing these shape functions. Their validity and usefulness are presented using 1-D gas bearing models. And a validation of developed 2-D analysis code is shown with a gas flat and spiral groove face seal models.

Effects of Air Compressibility on the Hydrodynamic Forces of a Bag

  • The hydrodynamic problem when the pressurized bag submerges partially into water and oscillates was formulated by Lee(1992), and the solution method was given, In his formulation, however, the compressilbility of air was neglected and the pressure inside the bag was assumed to be constant. In this paper, the formulation was done including the air compressibility and the wall to block fling around phenomenon. The compression process was assumed to be a isothermal process for a static problem, isentropic process for a dynamic problem. And the stability was analyzed for the static problem. Through the various numerical calculations, the forces and the shape of the bag were compared with those of a rigid body case, constant pressure case, and variable pressure case.

  • Pneumatic equipments are widely used in factory automation. Compressed air has many merits, but because of compressibility pneumatic actuators are used limitedly where requires an exact intermediate stopping positions and very slow constant speed. This paper shows the application example of multi-position cylinder to the forming machine.

Compressibility and Strength Characteristics of Light-weighted Foam Soil (경량기포혼합토의 압축 및 강도특성 연구)

  • Strength and compressibility characteristics of Light-Weighted Foam Soil (LWFS) are experimentally investigated in the paper. LWFS is composed of the dredged soils, cement and air foam to reduce unit-weight and to increase compressive strength. For these purposes, both unconfined compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out fer artficially prepared specimens of LWFS with various initial water contents, cement contents, mixing ratio of silty dredged soils and different confining stresses. The experimental results of LWFS indicate that the stress-strain relationship and the compressive strength are strongly influenced by cement contents rather than intial water contents of the edged soils. In this paper, the normalizing scheme considering the ratio of initial water contents, cement contents, and air foam contents has been proposed to evaluate the relationship between compressive strength of LWFS and a normalized factor.

Numerical Simulation of Laminar Flows for a Circular Cylinder Vertically Piercing Free Surface (수직원통 주위의 자유표면 층류운동의 수치해석)

  • In this paper, effects of free surface on viscous flow is investigated. Continuity equation coupled with Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by using an artificial compressibility method[1, 2]. The body-fitted generalized curvilinear coordinate system is employed to deal with arbitrary body shape. The IAF scheme with finite difference method is used to solve the equations, and a diagonal algorithm is applied to time-varying Jacobian matrices for the computational economics. Free surface shape is obtained by applying zero pressure condition to still water surface at each time step. A numerical test is made for larminar flow around a circular cylinder vertically piercing the free surface. Computed flow patterns are largely affected by the existance of free surface in low Reynolds number flows treated in this paper. Free surface causes viscous pressure drag to vary much in depth direction in accordance with the variations of flow pattern.

Compressibility Characteristics of the Lime Treated Clay (생석회 혼합토의 압축특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, effects of the acidification of ground and the chemical additive materials-ferric oxide, calcium chloride and calcium sulphate on the compressibility characteristics of the marine clay treated with quick lime were investigated. The rapid inflection point method was carried out. Results showed that the compression index of the untreated marine clay increased as the pH of pore water decreased. Also, the preconsolidation pressure, the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability of the untreated marine clay decreased with pH of pore water. In the case of the marine clay treated with the quick lime-calcium chloride, the compression index decreased and the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability increased. Specially, the preconsolidation pressure of sample treated with the quick lime-ferric oxide was higher than that of another samples.
