The theory of Hwa Acupuncture Therapy (HAT), called Hwa Chim Therapy, is a part of the Five Elements Theory unique to Korea. HAT, created and developed by Jaehoon Song, integrates the victor-vanquished as well as the son-mother relationship of the Five Elements of breakdown and restoration of balance between yin and yang. And also, it provides resources and data on The seventy fifth Difficulty(75難) of Classic on Difficulty - Nan Jin 75. HAT establishes objectiveness and accuracy of diagnosis based upon the traditional method and procedure of pulse taking. In HAT, a person's state of illness is diagnosed by applying the comparative examination of the palpitation of the pulse. It is fact that the pulse varies according to the state, and that HAT treatment has proven the positive results by using the victor-vanquished relationship of Classic on Difficulty-Nan Jin 75. Despite a concise and simple theory, Hwa Chim is very effective in treating a wide range of illnesses, and thus it has gained an increasing attention of many scholars and practitioners in the field of traditional Korean oriental medicine. However, it is the first theoretical attempt to the clinical research and scientific methodology of Ohaeng Hwa Chim, and more active Hwa Acupuncture R&D is being conducted nationwide.
Subjective symptoms, counts of blood cells and liver function test were conducted on 198 male workers who were exposed to toluene in Kyungin area from September to November, 1986. According to the level of urinary hippuric acid concentration, the total sample was classified into the high exposure group ($concentration{\geqq}3g/1$) and the low exposure group(concentration<3g/1). The following findings were obtained by comparing the two group: 1) Contrary to the previous findings. the urinary hippuric acid concentration of toluene exposed workers showed bimodal distribution. It meant that the toluene exposed workers were mixed with the non-exposed or minimal exposed workers. 2) The high exposure group showed a lower level of leucocytes counts ($6,630{\pm}1,860{\mu}l$) than the low exposure group ($6,340{\pm}1,960/{\mu}l$). 3) The high exposure group showed a higher level of SGOT, SGPT and r-GTP than the low exposure group (p<0.05). 4) The high exposure group complained much more subjective symptoms (e. g. skin rash, loss of appetite, palpitation) than the low exposure group.
Since ancient times, various herbal medicines have been used in folk medicine to treat a variety of diseases. While the majority of drugs belong to the Kingdom of Plantae, some drugs from the Kingdom of Animalia are listed in various Materia medica of alternative medicines. Animal-derived drugs are mentioned in the Unani system of Medicine (USM) and have been used successfully to treat a variety of diseases. Marjān (Corallium rubrum) is a vital marine drug of animal origin that has been used in USM since ancient times and continues to be used today. It possesses a variety of beneficial pharmacological properties, including tonic effects on the heart, brain, stomach, and eyes, pregnancy protection, expectorant, and hemostyptic properties. It is used to treat hemoptysis, palpitation, bleeding piles, hemiplegia, heart failure, and general weakness. It is also an ingredient in a variety of Unani formulations with pharmacological significance. Unani physicians expanded the uses of Marjan and successfully used it to treat a variety of new diseases. There is a dearth of scientific research on its pharmacological and medicinal properties. The urgent need is to validate the Unani claims about its beneficial cardiac and nervine actions, as well as other significant actions mentioned in the Unani literature.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the adverse events and safety of Mahuang used as anti-obesity treatment in Korean medicine. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, KoreaMed, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS) and SCIENCE-ON were used as searching for randomized controlled trials investigating the safety of Mahuang for treating obesity from January, 2000 to July, 2021. Results: Total 6 studies were included for analyzing. In most studies, heart rate was higher in experimental group than in placebo group with statistically significant difference. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure had no significant differences between both groups, but systolic blood pressure got lower in experimental group. Most adverse events reported in experimental group were dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, palpitation and insomnia, but serious adverse events were not reported. Conclusions: This study provides the evidence about the safety of Mahuang for treating obesity. However, increase of heart rate and minor adverse events could be occurred. Further study is needed to confirm the safety of Mahuang.
This case report demonstrates the effect of modified Bangibokryeong-tang (Fangji Fuling Decoction), a traditional herbal prescription in treating dyspnea and palpitations, symptoms that often lead to anxiety and reduced quality of life of cardiac patients. A female patient in her late 70s with congenital valve malformation and atrial fibrillation presented with dyspnea and palpitations, each rated at a severity of 8 on a numeric rating scale (NRS). After voluntarily discontinuing Western medication, she received modified BGBRT for 25 days, leading to significant symptom relief and NRS improvement to 0-2. The patient reported maintaining an improved condition and showed a significant increase in vitality. This improvement was sustained for 7 months, but the symptoms recurred; thus, modified BGBRT was restarted. Modified BGBRT showed substantial effects on persistent cardiac-origin dyspnea and palpitations. Thus, this TKM has the potential to manage symptoms and enhance the quality of life of cardiac patients.
Primary cardiac tumor has very low incidence, especially in cases of malignancy. A 29 year old male patient visited our cardiologic clinic for recent aggrevation of dyspnea on exertion and palpitation. Echocardiography showed a large tumor in the left atrium, which suggested the left atrial myxoma. Urgent open heart surgery was taken. The operative finding was fossa ovalis based a large tumor (35$\times$90$\times$50 mm) that invaded the posterior wall of LA and right superior pulmonary vein directly. The tumor was excised well by simple dissection, and the final pathologic report was malignant myxofibrosarcoma. His postoperative course was smooth and he was discharged in good health. Postoperative radiation and chemotherapy had taken with satisfactory clinical outcome.
A clinical study on 139 cases of operated PDA was performed during period from Aug. 1982 to Apr. 1991 at the Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of Chonbuk National University Hospital. The following results are obtained. 1. The 35 males and 104 females ranged in age from 6 months to 40 years. [mean 10.2 yrs. ] 2. Chief complaints of the patients were frequent URI in 50%, dyspnea on exertion in 31.2%, palpitation in 11.1%, and no subjective symptoms in 28.78% 3. On auscultation, continuous machinery murmur heard in 79.86% and systolic murmur in 20.14%. 4. Radiologic findings of chest P-A showed increased density of pulmonary vascularity in 80.58%, cardiomegaly in 61.87%, and within normal limit in 19.42% of the patients. 5. The signs of LVH[44.4%], RVH[17.4%], BVH[7.6%] were noted on the EKC. 6. Cardiac catheterizations were performed in 114 patients. The mean Qp/Qs was 2.65 and the mean Pp /Ps was 0.41 and the mean systolic pulmonary artery pressure was 46.6 mmHg. 7. Operative methods were as followed: The 130 cases[93.52%] of ligation and 3 cases[2.16%] of division & suture for PDA were performed through the left posterolateral thoracotomy. And the remained cases were managed under the cardiopulmonary bypass. 8. Operative complications were hoarseness in 8 cases, atelectasis in 6 cases, intraoperative ductal rupture under the left thoracotomy approach 2 cases, recannalization 1 case and others in 3 cases. 9. One patient died due to ductal rupture intraoperatively and the overall mortality was 0.7%.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease with an of unknown etiology, involving bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, pulmonary, skin and eye lesions. However, involvement of the endocrine system in sarcoidosis is quite rare, and the coexistence of both diseases is extremely unusual. We describe a 60-year-old woman presenting with sarcoidosis and Graves' disease. She was admitted for evaluation of dry cough, dyspnea, palpitation and general weakness. Both thyroid glands were enlarged diffusely. The thyroid function tests showed suppressed serum thyrotropin and an increased thyroid hormone level. The levels of the TSH receptor antibody, anti-thyroglobulin antibody and anti-microsomal antibody were higher than normal. The radionuclide scan($^{131}I$) showed increased iodine uptake. The chest X-ray revealed pulmonary hilar enlargement and high resolution CT showed both hilar lymph nodes enlargement and tiny parenchymal nodules. The transbronchial lung biopsy showed a noncaseating granuloma without necrosis. We report this case of pulmonary sarcoidosis plus Graves' disease with a review of the relevant literatures.
Objectives: We intended to identify differences of general symptoms related to existence & nonexistence of uterine myoma. Methods: We surveyed 948 women from 35 to 45 years old who had received Korean oriental medical questionnaires about general symptom patterns and abdominal & pelvic ultrasonography at Kyung-Hee University medical center from May 2007 to October 2008. After we divided the women into two (uterine myoma or normal) groups by ultrasonography result, we compared general symptom patterns of the uterine myoma group with those of the normal group. Results: In relation to digestion pattern, appetite showed statistically significant difference between the normal and uterine myoma groups. In relation to evacuation pattern, stool frequency showed statistically significant difference between the normal and uterine myoma groups. In relation to psychologic pattern, difference in oppression in the chest & palpitation showed statistical significance between the groups. In relation to the other patterns, differences in throat discomfort & hypertonicity of nape neck showed statistical significance between the normal and uterine myoma groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: The result showed that prevalence of uterine myoma should be considered in respect to digestion pattern, evacuation pattern, and psychologic pattern. We need further study after increasing the size of the uterine myoma group and improvement of general symptom questionnaires.

Purpose : This study was performed to assess the clinical effect of Daejo-hwan(DJH) on climacteric syndrome, not only common symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, palpitation and so on, but also urogenital tract disturbances like vaginal dryness and sexual problems. Methods : We randomly divided 120 women with the climacteric syndrome into two groups. One group received only DJH 2 pills(4g) a time, three times a day for 8 weeks and the other group didn't get any treatment for the same period. We evaluated sonography, DXA, blood test, female hormone test and questionnaires in the beginning as well as after 8 weeks of the treatment. Symptoms were measured by Kupperman's index, Menopausal Rating Scale and the Greene Climacteric Scale. Results : In this study, DJH was innoxious on liver and kidney. And DJH in the treated group reduced climacteric symptoms significantly as compared to the control group without enlargement of uterus myoma and the change of estradiol. In Kupperman's index and MRS, DJH in the treated group especially had effects on fatigue, shoulder pain. anxiety, headache, hot flushes as well as sexual problems. Conclusion : These results suggest that DJH can be useful in treating various climacteric symptoms including sexual problems without influences on the size of uterus myoma and estradiol.
