Owing to the increase in consumption of multimedia content and the improvement of device capacity, user demand for high-quality content has increased. However, it is difficult to transport such large amounts of content over the existing broadcasting network with limited bandwidth. To provide high-definition broadcasting, some studies suggest methods of transporting multimedia over heterogeneous networks after encoding content hierarchically. MPEG Media Transport (MMT), standardized by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), is a solution that enables large-volume media transport over heterogeneous networks such as digital broadcasting networks and packet-switched networks. In the case of delivering a scalable encoded video over different networks, synchronization of each stream is an important issue. MMT defines a synchronization scheme, but does not contain sufficient functions to implement it. In this paper, we propose a synchronization scheme for media streams that are encoded hierarchically, divided into layers, and transported over heterogeneous networks. We implement our scheme using MMT and HTTP, and experimented using three encapsulated video streams with different durations. As a result, we show that the proposed scheme can reduce the waiting time to display high-quality video, relative to Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP-Scalable Video Coding (DASH-SVC) by requesting segments of enhanced layers after calculating the transmission time. Additionally, we find out that the selection of durations have a relation to the characteristics of the video.

Due to the spread of mobile devices and the introduction of high-quality services, mobile traffic is expected to increase sharply and overload of cellular networks is expected. D2D communication is a way to reduce the load and evolve to 5th generation. Since D2D communication directly communicates between the terminals, it can reduce the overload of the cellular network and improve energy efficiency, data rate and network performance. This paper proposes a D2D handover scheme for D2D communication in cellular networks. The cellular network is a 3GPP EPS, and the proposed D2D handover method improves the existing EPS handover process considering compatibility between existing EPS and D2D communication. We also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed handover scheme using the network simulator ns-3. Simulation results show that the proposed handover scheme is superior to existing handover methods in terms of CUE variation, packet transmission delay time, and throughput.

Recently, there has been a clear trend towards the application of ad hoc networking technology in civil aviation communication systems, giving birth to a new research field, namely, aeronautical ad hoc networks (AANETs). An AANET is a special type of ad hoc wireless network with a significantly larger scale and distinct characteristics of its mobile nodes. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop a simulator to facilitate the research in these networks. In this paper, we present a network simulator, Aero-Sim, for AANETs. Aero-Sim, which is based on the freely distributed NS-2 simulator, enables detailed packet-level simulations of protocols at the MAC, link, network, transport, and application layers by composing simulations with existing modules and protocols in NS-2. Moreover, Aero-Sim supports three-dimensional network deployment. Through several case studies using realistic China domestic air traffic, we show that the proposed simulator can be used to simulate AANETs and can reproduce the real world with high fidelity.

In Vehicular Ad-hoc Network(VANET) which constructs networks without fixed infrastructure among vehicles, network topology is frequently changed due to high mobility. In case of urban model, communication disconnections caused by interruptions of communication propagation such as buildings and constructions could be often occurred. Therefore, in VANET environment a routing protocol to complement its characteristics is needed. This paper suggests an algorithm to improve the transmission performance at intersections by approaching of the distance-based broadcasting which utilizes the information of vehicle's position. By using relative velocity among vehicles, it makes the stability of route decision improved and reduces packet collisions through graded priorities in the intersection, and simultaneously improves the performance of data rate. It can be seen that the performance compared with previous algorithm is significantly improved when using the suggested algorithm in the urban traffic environment.

In ad hoc networks, loss-based congestion window progression by the traditional means of duplicate ACKs and timeouts causes high network buffer utilization due to large bursts of data, thereby degrading network bandwidth utilization. Moreover, network-oriented feedbacks to handle route disconnection events may impair packet forwarding capability by adding to MAC layer congestion and also dissipate considerable network resources at reluctant intermediate nodes. Here, we propose a new TCP scheme that does not require the participation of intermediate nodes. It is a purely end-to-end scheme using TCP timestamps to deduce link conditions. It also eliminates spurious reductions of the transmission window in cases of timeouts and fast retransmits. The scheme incorporates a receiver-oriented rate controller (rater), and a congestion window delimiter for the 802.11 MAC protocol. In addition, the transient nature of medium availability due to medium contention during the connection time is addressed by a freezing timer (freezer) at the receiver, which freezes the sender whenever heavy contention is perceived. Finally, the sender-end is modified to comply with the receiver-end enhancements, as an optional deployment. Simulation studies show that our modification of TCP for ad hoc networks offers outstanding performance in terms of goodput, as well as throughput.
Next generation network (NGN) is a packet-based converged network to support session and non-session services in QoS-enabled broadband transport network. QoS based resource control must be defined to support differentiated services for various network users in NGN. This paper defined parallel control schemes for NGN resource control interfaces to minimize session and resource control delays. We simulated the existing and proposed NGN control schemes to measure and analyze control delays and completion ratios. By arrival rate of 120 in two-phase resource control, we checked out that completion ratios of sequential and parallel schemes achieved 100%, and the control delay of parallel scheme was improved by about 21.5% compared to that of sequential scheme.

In this paper, we propose a network-based IP mobility management scheme, called Access Independent Mobile Service with IPv4/IPv6 Dual Stack (AIMS-DS), which can provide high-quality multimedia services to IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack mobile nodes (MNs) without any interruption over various wireless/wired access networks. The proposed scheme provides an MN with a fast and reliable mobility service among heterogeneous wireless access networks through the network-based control, the complete separation method of control and data plane, the cross-layer (layer2 and layer3) interworking method for handover control acceleration, etc, In addition, the proposed AIMS-DS can provide seamless mobility service to an MN under the environments of IPv4/IPv6 coexisting networks through the home address mobility support and transport network support. Through performance evaluation with computer simulations, we have shown the superiority of the proposed AIMS-DS in terms of handover latency, packet 1085 and packet delivery latency.

Transmission control protocols have to overcome common problems in wireless networks. TCP employing both packet loss discrimination mechanism and available bandwidth estimation algorithm, known as the good existing solution, shows significant performance enhancement in wireless networks. For instance, TCP New Jersey which exhibits high throughput in wireless networks intends to improve TCP performance by using available bandwidth estimation and congestion warning. Even though it achieves 17% and 85% improvements in terms of goodput over TCP Westwood and TCP Reno, respectively, we further improve it by exploring maximized available bandwidth estimation, handling bit-error-rate error recovery, and effective adjustment of sending rate for retransmission timeout. Hence, we propose TCP NJ+, showing that for up to 5% packet loss rate, it outperforms other TCP variants by 19% to 104% in terms of goodput when the network is in bi-directional background traffic.

The transprot layer protocol for distrubuted multimedia applications in high speed network should gurantee the Quality of Serivce(QoS)requested by uwer.,The QoS Parmenters can be divied into two calssifications:those depend on the speed of a network such as bandiwidth,end-to-end transmission delay and throughput;and net- woek independent parameters such as various typed of group communications, retransmission method based on multimeda characteristic, acceptable packet wrror rate and transmission priority. In this proposed protocol,we divided user's QoS into performance redated parmeters and non-performance related parameters. The perform- ance-related paramenters are mapped into ATM traddic paramenters by the Distributed QoS Manger(DQM),the QoS manager, and the non-performance redlted paramenters are supported by the Distributed Multimedia Trans-port protocol(DMTP),a high-performance group transport protocol.Especially, becaues the DMTP is designed with considering the IP protocol,it can be efficiently used as an underlying protocol not onlu in ATM,but also in Ethernet,Token ring and FDDI LAN.
IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) has become the prevailing solution for wireless Internet access while transport control protocol (TCP) is the dominant transport-layer protocol in the Internet. It is known that, in an infrastructure-based WLAN with multiple stations carrying long-lived TCP flows, the number of TCP stations that are actively contending to access the wireless channel remains very small. Hence, the aggregate TCP throughput is basically independent of the total number of TCP stations. This phenomenon is due to the closed-loop nature of TCP flow control and the bottleneck downlink (i.e., access point-to-station) transmissions in infrastructure-based WLANs. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive analytical model to study TCP dynamics in infrastructure-based 802.11 WLANs. We calculate the average number of active TCP stations and the aggregate TCP throughput using our model for given total number of TCP stations and the maximum TCP receive window size. We find out that the default minimum contention window sizes specified in the standards (i.e., 31 and 15 for 802.11b and 802.11a, respectively) are not optimal in terms of TCP throughput maximization. Via ns-2 simulation, we verify the correctness of our analytical model and study the effects of some of the simplifying assumptions employed in the model. Simulation results show that our model is reasonably accurate, particularly when the wireline delay is small and/or the packet loss rate is low.
